Summary/Abstract: Recently forces slowing down the integration process in Europe have shown a growing impact. It partially explains why the number of future scenarios for Europe is growing. All of them consist of some diagnosis of the present situation, however forecasts they deliver are more or less optimistic. The aim of the article is to evaluate the usefulness of neo-functional regional integration theory to explain recent and future processes going on inside the EU. The paper written by F. Schimmelfennig is a good example of neo-functionalism application to two EU crises: euro crisis and immigration crisis. Schimmelfennig shows how important is the relation between the scope of national governments’ power and the authority of supra-national institutions, both deciding on costs and benefits of further EU integration progress or EU disintegration. The incorporation of disintegration theory to the neo-functional integration theory (Schmitter, Niemann, Lefkofridi) is then discussed. Some opinions on the use of this more general theory to evaluate Brexit effects are presented. The paper concludes with stressing the need to continue research on the role of different theories of integration in the analysis of European Union crises.
