Identyfikacja potencjalnych nabywców polis ubezpieczeniowych w warunkach mocno niezbilansowanej próby uczącej

Identyfikacja potencjalnych nabywców polis ubezpieczeniowych w warunkach mocno niezbilansowanej próby uczącej

Author(s): Mariusz Kubus / Language(s): Polish Issue: 48/2015

Having given the data set with executed transactions and customer demographic features one can use marketing scoring to support sales campaign. The discrimination methods used in the scoring often face the problem of imbalance classes and irrelevant variables. In this paper, we analyze the insurance market, where the scoring is performed with a use of the weighted k nearest neighbors and multivariate filters. The feature selection significantly contributed to increasing the number of correctly identified potential purchasers of the insurance policy.

Ocena poziomu rozwoju gospodarczego i powiązań z zagranicą krajów na przykładzie członków NAFTA

Ocena poziomu rozwoju gospodarczego i powiązań z zagranicą krajów na przykładzie członków NAFTA

Author(s): Paweł Kowalik / Language(s): Polish Issue: 48/2015

Numerous economic indicators are used for the purpose of research and international comparisons. Most important are Gross Domestic Product (GDP), national income, unemployment rate, inflation rate, foreign trade’s and investments’ share in GDP. Other measures, which are based on GDP, may be used for the economic growth assessment. These are for example economy internationalization, activity level, openness and dependence and international competitiveness. The aim of this paper is to assess the level of economic development and foreign relations of the countries forming the economic group of NAFTA. After a brief introduction to the subject, the manner of calculating the indicators that are used for such an assessment more rarely is described. Then the indicators calculated for the current NAFTA member states are analysed.

Regeneration of the Hazaribagh urban brownfield: An imperative for Dhaka’s sustainable urban development

Regeneration of the Hazaribagh urban brownfield: An imperative for Dhaka’s sustainable urban development

Author(s): Mohammed Nawrose Fatemi,Tahmina Rahman / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2015

This study investigates the projected outcome of the Bangladesh government’s decision to relocate the Hazaribagh tanneries outside Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Ever since the early industrialisation of Bangladesh, leather processing industries have played a significant economic role. In Dhaka, these industries are mainly concentrated in Hazaribagh, an important area in the southwestern part of the city. Hazaribagh is a junction connecting the new township with the old one. However, the use of inferior technologies, coupled with the absence of proper industrial waste-management and waste-treatment facilities, have destroyed the ecology of the Hazaribagh area and badly impacted its surroundings. Consequently, moving the tanneries from Hazaribagh and then redeveloping the area offers a unique opportunity in the country's sustainable urban regeneration. Regenerating the Hazaribagh urban brownfield can serve as a model for sustainable twenty-first-century neighbourhoods, incorporating contemporary facilities and environmentally friendly elements for healthy living. This study analyses the Hazaribagh area’s potential as an example of a planned sustainable area for the entire city, free from the severe pollution that it is notorious for.

Prenova degradiranega območja Hazaribagh: nujni ukrep za trajnostni razvoj Dake

Prenova degradiranega območja Hazaribagh: nujni ukrep za trajnostni razvoj Dake

Author(s): Tahmina Rahman,Mohammed Nawrose Fatemi / Language(s): Slovenian Issue: 2/2015

Uporaba tehnologije slabe kakovosti, neustrezno ravnanje z industrijskimi odpadki in pomanjkanje naprav za obdelavo odpadkov so uničili ekologijo Hazaribagha in močno obremenili okolico.

DERIVATIONAL PARADIGMS WITHIN SELECTED CONCEPTUAL FIELDS – CONTRASTIVE RESEARCH

DERIVATIONAL PARADIGMS WITHIN SELECTED CONCEPTUAL FIELDS – CONTRASTIVE RESEARCH

Author(s): Vesna Antoniová,Pavol Štekauer / Language(s): Serbian Issue: 2/2015

The paper discusses the nature of derivational paradigms and accounts of them as a combination of two parameters that establish a paradigmatic network. I tis demonstrated that there are no substantial differences between inflectional and derivational paradigms and that the only major difference concerns the saturation value, i.e., the degree of structural completeness of a paradigmatic network. It is emphasized that actual words are only one aspect of derivational paradigmaticity, theother one being an enormous potential capacity of the derivational system. A contrastive empirical research analyses three selected cognitive fields in three different languages in order to demonstrate the possibility the advantage of the parameter of saturatiuon value for contrastive examination of derivational systems of various languages.

A LINGUISTIC CONSTRUCT INFORMS MUSICOLOGY: RANKING METRICAL CONSTRAINTS IN MUSIC PERCEPTION

A LINGUISTIC CONSTRUCT INFORMS MUSICOLOGY: RANKING METRICAL CONSTRAINTS IN MUSIC PERCEPTION

Author(s): Mihailo Antović / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2015

The construct of perceptual constraints has become increasingly important in cognitive science in recent years, including the research at the intersection of linguistics and musicology. The present paper provides the results of an empirical study into the ordering of metrical preference rules/constraints from the group MPR5, as proposed in "A Generative Theory of Tonal Music" (GTTM, Lerdahl & Jackendoff, 1983). The theory predicts a preference for inferring strong beats on musical tones which exhibit a relatively prominent pitch change, dynamic, long slur, long pattern of articulation, long duration of a pitch in the relevant levels of a time-span reduction, and prominent harmony in the relevant level of a time-span reduction. A hundred and twenty randomly selected undergraduate students (30 musicians and 90 nonmusicians) were played twelve metrical sequences based on the examples of the rule MPR5 from GTTM, of which one half were constructed so as to comply with the participants' expectancies and another half so as to contradict them. The participants were prompted to press a button when certain they had heard a stressed beat. The distributions of responses suggest that the six constraints can be ranked into three larger groups, as follows: physical stress (dynamic, harmony), melodic stress (pitch, slur, length), ornamental stress (articulation). Musicians achieved better results than nonmusicians, and the response latencies considerably rose in the stimuli contradicting expectancies, but the internal constraint rankings remained relatively stable irrespective of the two factors (musical training and inception of stimuli on the targeted beat). Given such results, metrical segmentation is hypothesized to be the principal contribution of GTTM which has stood the test of time.

REPETITION AND INTERTEXTUALITY AS MODALITIES OF TEXT STRUCTURING AND PERCEPTION

REPETITION AND INTERTEXTUALITY AS MODALITIES OF TEXT STRUCTURING AND PERCEPTION

Author(s): Maria Samkova / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2015

This article examines the relationship between a text structure and the perception of a text from the perspective of linguo-synergetic approach. The paper is grounded in the mathematics of harmony and the theory of intertextuality. Using the metro-rhythmic algorithm, the author reveals symmetrical and asymmetrical repetition, its vertical and horizontal types which influence text perception harmonically. The perception of a linear text is mainly influenced by a non-linear text structure which is revealed at horizontal and vertical scales of repetition and intertextuality. A horizontal type of repetition includes repeated rhythmic units within a coursebook. A vertical type includes lexical and syntactic repetition within one text. Being spaced in time, repetition forms a spiral, due to which a text can be easily perceived and memorized by students. Intertextuality is divided into hypertextuality and paratextuality, presented horizontally; intextuality and architextuality, presented vertically. Intertextuality is an effective way of text interpretation, which activates students’ background knowledge. The article has been written within the broad framework of the field of foreign language acquisition. A polilogue is a text that has intertextual inclusions, repeated lexical and syntactic structures which create a harmonic rhythm that enables key words and sentences to be recycled. Together with task-cycling and spaced retrieval, a harmonically structured polilogue makes a foreign language acquisition effective.

ON THE PERCEPTION OF THE SLOVAK VERBS OF THINKING BY SLOVAK MONOLINGUALS AND HUNGARIAN-SLOVAK BILINGUALS

ON THE PERCEPTION OF THE SLOVAK VERBS OF THINKING BY SLOVAK MONOLINGUALS AND HUNGARIAN-SLOVAK BILINGUALS

Author(s): Matúš Hrubovčák / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2015

The present paper deals with the semantic field of the Slovak verbs of THINKING from the perspective of cognitive semantics and sociolinguistics. It is hypothesized that the results will prove a hierarchical distribution in the field (i.e. a cline from prototypes to peripheries). This opposes the objectivist position assuming categorial homogeneity, with all members meeting the same criteria. Moreover, sociolinguistically conditioned differences are expected to exist between our two samples. The first one, comprising Slovak monolinguals, will serve as a control group. The other one, consisting of their Hungarian-Slovak bilingual peers, will be checked for the influence of the language background exerted on the perception of the verbs. The results seem to confirm the hypothesized hierarchical distribution and throw some light on the role of the language background in the bilingual sample.

DRAMA'S MOMENT OF TRUTH: US/TELL ME LIES ABOUT VIETNAM AND DEATH AND THE MAIDEN

DRAMA'S MOMENT OF TRUTH: US/TELL ME LIES ABOUT VIETNAM AND DEATH AND THE MAIDEN

Author(s): Lena Petrović / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2015

The paper offers a comparative analysis of two plays sharing a single concern with the tragic mechanism of historical repetition and its causes. US, the collaborative dramatic experiment directed by PeterBrook in 1966, and its 1968 cinematic version Tell Me Lies About Vietnam, re-mastered and released in 2012, and Death and the Maiden, Ariel Dorfman’s 1990 play about the failure of democracy in the post-Pinochet Chile, both rest on the assumption that to adequately address the history of war and holocaust requires more than the disclosure of factual truth. It demands a radical re-examination and alteration of identity - a process involving a kind of re-mythologizing that takes place on a deepest psychic level, the zone of our original core humanness which, buried under the layers of culturally acquired habit of denial, has become impenetrable to truth, and to the reality of the other. The condition, referred to as dis-imagination by the Canadian philosopher Henry Giroux, has traditionally been a challenge to western art, particularly drama: thus, I will argue, the governing purpose of Brook’s and Dorfman’s plays, is to examine the possibilities open to drama of conquering denial and releasing the kind of sympathetic imagination crucial to non-hierarchical ‘I/Thou’ relationship that used to regulate social life in archaic communities, when, according to an increasing number of scientists, the biologically scripted empathy and solidarity were the only conceivable strategy of survival.
