Enhancements to the Work Ability of a High-Speed Motor Used in Machine Tools

Author(s): Wawan Purwanto,Yusuf Dewantoro Herlambang,Kristine Mae Paboreal Dunque,Firoj Mulani,Dwi Sudarno Putra,Martias Martias / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

This paper presents a strategy for maximizing the effectiveness of high-speed spindle motors in manufacturing equipment. Using the ideal design of the stator winding geometry, as calculated by the Taguchi method, we were able to increase the maximum torque and efficiency. The rotor slot geometry was optimized using a response surface to raise the starting torque and reduce the starting current. The objectives of this investigation were to come up with a strategy for designing high-speed spindle motors so that they have better performance in terms of starting torque, maximum torque, efficiency, and starting current. Spindle motor temperature rise was the focus of the thermal measurements. Finally, a working spindle motor prototype was built and tested to verify the results of the Finite element analysis (FEA). The validity of the suggested model is demonstrated by a comparison between experimental measurements and finite element findings. The total percentage of mistakes was close to 2%.

Lean Startup in Croatia - Does the Croatian Startup Scene Develop Effective Enterprises?

Author(s): Maja Lalić,Marina Klacmer Calopa,Jelena Horvat / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2012

In times of general business uncertainty, when the companies face challenges upon which their further existence depends, one of the reactions of the management board is influencing the processes which lead to a relatively quick decrease of expenses and general rationalization of the company's business. The method, or what many refer to as a management philosophy, which is recommended to be used in crisis periods, is the lean method. Having in mind the extremely volatile business environment, lean startup approach has raised to surface recently since it takes the basic principles from the lean production. Although it was primarily developed for technical domain, the lean startup approach to management is flexible, and can therefore be applied in every industry. It uses the experimental way of approaching the innovation cycle, as well as a continuously evaluated process of learning about the organization with the goal of rigorous and measurable validation of the development hypotheses for the new products and services. The lean startup approach tires to systematically and very precisely lead the entrepreneur in discovering the valuable parts of a business vision, and in rejecting the parts which are not realistically founded. This paper analyses the Croatian startup companies by using a customized questionnaire. Besides an overview of the companies' founding profiles, financing sources, the development phases of startup companies, business areas and metrics used by startup companies, as well as information sources, the research showed that the Croatian startup scene is familiar with the principles of lean startup methodology and it is successfully implementing it in business.

Models of Irreversible Electroporation: A Review and Initial Model Implementation

Author(s): Tihomir Georgiev,Kristina Bliznakova,Zhivko Bliznakov,Georgi Todorov / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2024

Cancer may affect any person. Amongst possible techniques to treat some cancers is ablation, through the use of the irreversible electroporation (IRE) as one of the methods. Medical University of Varna is implementing a project on irreversible electroporation aiming to develop a hardware prototype. The first step is review of existing models and the development of an own model, which will be used in the device prototyping. To find the existing models, we reviewed articles related to electroporation models. Based on the literature review, we developed own model, where we used open-source software OpenEP and Embarcadero C++. The review of the available literature publications indicates that initial models employed a simplified cell structure. Despite this simplicity, these models effectively reflected important characteristics of the cell behaviour and the interdependencies between field features and cells. Recent investigations created better models and optimized parameters for specific cases. The review models were used in the development of dedicated software application for simulation, visualization, and educational purposes in the field of IRE. Developed software application allows investigation of various IRE protocols. Experimental investigation of implemented models and software is undergoing. The software will allow further advancement in our capacity to explore and comprehend cellular dynamics.

Performance Analysis of an Incremental Conductance MPPT Algorithm for Photovoltaic Systems Under Rapid Irradiance Changes

Performance Analysis of an Incremental Conductance MPPT Algorithm for Photovoltaic Systems Under Rapid Irradiance Changes

Author(s): Asnil Asnil,Refdinal Nazir,Krismadinata Krismadinata,Muhammad Nasir Sonni / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2024

The control algorithm for tracking the maximum power point (MPPT) is a crucial factor that influences the system's capacity to harness the maximum energy from the sun using photovoltaic. Incremental conductance stands out as one of the most commonly employed MPPT techniques due to its simplicity and low implementation complexity. However, it has various shortcomings, rendering it less effective in adapting to changing solar radiation conditions. Therefore, this study proposed a modification to enhance the algorithm's performance. The proposed modified algorithm is validated through experiments, revealing that the fastest tracking time for the adjusted incremental conductance algorithm was 72 ms, whereas the unmodified algorithm took 84 ms. Additionally, oscillations observed during changes in radiation values were 2 W and 1.66 W for the unmodified algorithm, occurring during decreases and increases in radiation values, respectively. In contrast, the proposed modified incremental conductance algorithm resulted in a consistent oscillation of 1.33 W for each change in radiation value.Furthermore, it can be concluded that the modified incremental conductance algorithm can increase the tracking time as well as reduce oscillations that occur under various conditions of changes in radiation values.
