The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and their Implementation in Germany and the Czech Republic

The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and their Implementation in Germany and the Czech Republic

Author(s): Harald Christian Scheu,Jitka Brodská / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2019

In this paper the authors focus on the United Nations Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights of 2011 which present the most ambitious international attempt to tackle the problem of business and human rights. The authors deal with the genesis and the added value of the UN Guiding Principles and analyze which legal tools may be used by victims against business entities that have violated their human rights. A special view is given on law and legal practice in Germany and in the Czech Republic. Although the UN Guiding Principles, so far, have had only little influence on national rules concerning jurisdiction, procedural and material law in liability cases we find that their pontential shall not be underestimated. We expect that the implementation of the UN Guiding Principles will lead to a reform of national procedural regulations. States will have to consider ways how to introduce new procedural instruments like e.g. representative action and class action and how to address issues concerning evidence in international cases.

Acknowledging other people’s work is a key element of a constructive environment in an academic setting, especially nowadays, when access to information is easy, time is limited, and academics are under pressure to publish or perish. The main aim of this article is to synthesize this concept based on recent guidelines and to detail its most common types. We will discuss: plagiarism with/without intent, the plagiarism of ideas (content plagiarism), of text (form plagiarism), image/ table/ graphic plagiarism, plagiarizing others and self-plagiarism, plagiarism with/without quoting the source material or inadequate quoting of the source material

From Knowledge Enrichment to Career Development: The Case of Higher Education in Israel

From Knowledge Enrichment to Career Development: The Case of Higher Education in Israel

Author(s): Tamar Almor,Shnider Avi / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2019

Over the last 20 years, higher education enrolment rates have risen by 7% per year in upper middle-income countries and 5% in lower middle-income countries, showing an ever-increasing appetite for higher education around the world. Most students that enter academia hope to improve their lives with better paid careers and relatively few of them dream of becoming professors and researchers themselves. Concurrently, the academic hegemony over knowledge is receding and sources of knowledge are increasingly moving towards digital platforms that are not owned by academia. In this paper we address the development of higher education in the 21st century and the place of students in this process and analyse it in terms of preparation towards a world which will offer jobs that do not yet exist, exemplifying this process by describing the developments of higher education in Israel and by using the case study of the College of Management. We conclude that institutions of higher education need to change according to four dimensions: (1) The role of the student, (2) the learning process, (3) diversity and (4) skill and capabilities creation and we offer insights into how to manage this process of change.

Author(s): Andrzej Marjański,Łukasz Sułkowski / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2019

Objective: The article deals with the issue of family entrepreneurship, which plays an increasingly important role in the Polish economy. The aim of the article is to discuss the phenomenon of family entrepreneurship in Poland in market economy and to explore the evolution of family businesses. Research Design & Methods: The article is based on the review of the literature on the subject, its critical analysis and the results of empirical research conducted in this field by the authors in the years 2009-2018. Findings: In their development, family businesses need to take into account coping with the principles and practices of market economy and internationalisation processes, as well as problems related to family and business relationships that are specific only to them and multi-generational perspective of functioning. Being successful requires a development strategy thanks to which the businesses build their own brand, improve management processes, introduce innovations and adapt their market behaviour. Implications & Recommendations: Understanding the specificity of family entrepreneurship requires learning their essence and criteria for distinguishing these entities from other enterprises. The key factor is the duality of relations between the family and the business it runs. Contribution & Value Added: The originality of this work lies in cross-years comparisons of empirical research conducted by the same researches in the field of family entrepreneurship.

Organisational Learning in Startup Development and International Growth

Organisational Learning in Startup Development and International Growth

Author(s): Jurgita Sekliuckiene,Rimgailė Vaitkienė,Vestina Vainauskiene / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2018

Objective: This article explores the conceptual link between the development stages of a startup and organisational learning with the aim to conceptualise the practices of organisational learning levels emerging in specific life cycle stages of a global startup. Research Design & Methods: This article presents a review as well as a synthesis of the extant literature. The research integrates the theories of organisational learning and international entrepreneurship, and offers a conceptual framework that reveals interactions between the constructs in question. Findings: The results suggest that the ontological level and the processes of organisation learning can vary in global startups at different life cycle stages. In addition, the research findings also indicate that, for a global startup, for a successful transition from one cycle to another, learning processes of cyclical entrepreneurship learning have to take place. Implications & Recommendations: The findings of the study have implications in particular for global startup founders and their team members who would like to establish entrepreneurial businesses. Organisation learning practices should be applied in enterprises from the very beginning of the bootstrapping phase with the goal to develop a culture of learning and sharing knowledge when developing the startup idea. Contribution & Value Added: The originality of this work lies in proposing a conceptual framework that examines the organisational learning in startup development and international growth and a set of important considerations for further research, as well as contributing to the literature on international entrepreneurship.

INSTITUTIONAL EFFICIENCY, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, AND THE PREMISES OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN THE EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

INSTITUTIONAL EFFICIENCY, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, AND THE PREMISES OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN THE EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

Author(s): Augustin Ignatov / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2019

The development gap between the “Old” and “New” member countries of the European Union is an important problem challenging the efficiency and strength of the European single market. In this regard, a subsequent question arises: which actions in the policy making must be undertaken, by both national and supranational authorities, to stimulate cohesion in the EU and which directions should be followed? The present paper tries to answer this question considering the perspective of the Eastern European nations and their economic development premises analysing the aspects of governmental participation in the economy and the influence of entrepreneurship upon long run competitiveness. The research results explicitly underline that entrepreneurship in the Eastern European nations is a determinative driver of long-term economic competitiveness due to its favourable impact upon the formation of human capital, enhancement of innovation potential and overall intellectual resources of nations. The effects of governmental participation in the economy upon the economic growth premises are heterogeneous including on the formation of physical and intellectual capital. Consequently, it was reached the conclusion that the Eastern European Nations should prioritise entrepreneurship since it is capable of boosting human capital creation and, at the same time, they should improve the institutional quality to minimise the factors undermining the business including corruption and red-tape, etc. In such a way, the Eastern European countries can overcome, in the long run, the development gap with the Western EU states and raise their economic potential.

The dependent variable is the number of points achieved at the colloquium. The research results confirmed some assumptions. The students’ regular attendance of both lectures and exercises has a positive impact on the number of points in the colloquium. A positive impact on the success in the colloquium was confirmed for the variable the time spent in self-study, too. Also, students who rated their own study conditions by grades good (3) and very good (4), on a scale from 1 to 5, had significantly better results than other students. The other variables such as age, gender, employment and parenting did not prove to be statistically significant.

Primjena SNG modela u analizi vrijednosti koje utječu na odabir visokog učilišta

Primjena SNG modela u analizi vrijednosti koje utječu na odabir visokog učilišta

Author(s): Ivana Jadrić / Language(s): Bosnian Issue: 36/2018
