Literary translation is a communicative process based on the interaction and interweaving of cultures, which represents one of the most important factors for the promotion of a national literature in foreign cultural milieus. The main goal of this article is to analyse trends of translating Slovenian literature into foreign languages based on the data provided by the Slovenian Book Agency (JAK). We are interested in the following two questions: how many literary works have been translated into foreign languages from 2000 to 2020, and which languages are the commonest target languages? We analysed the data in the context of the Slovenia's political situation and geographical position and paid a special attention to the position of a translation in a polysystem.

NAMES OF (DEMI)GODDESSES AND (DEMI)GODS IN THE IDIOMS WE LIVE BY

The attitudes regarding the use of and the reference to names of (demi)goddesses and (demi)gods represent a matter of style, social convention(s) and personal choice. Over the centuries they have named cities, towns and burghs, beloved persons (sons and daughters), and popular festivals. Personal names in world mythologies have also been preserved in the public eye by means of diverse idiomatic structures also known as fixed expressions. This paper will describe the idiomatic patterns which are built around names of deities which are now part of both the English and Romanian lexicons. Although English and Romanian are two distant cultures, separated by almost a whole continent as well as the British Channel, many of the Greek and Roman fixed expressions which include mythonyms have now become part of their lexical heritages. This corpus-based research proves that even if two cultures, which are very distant both geographically and culturally, may as well be equally available to naturalizing a huge wealth of individual words and fixed expressions. As this paper will prove, such naturalizations are either fully or partially shared by the two hosting cultures or they may be language specific.

Physicians have represented, throughout the centuries, not only practitioners of a profession that requires grace, dedication and knowledge of the secrets of the human body and mind, but they have tried to keep up with the social and economic transformations of their societies. Anchored in the harsh realities of their native realms, doctors were best able to know the human spirit. The studies they followed in a field so different from the literary one, chosen later, provided them with the necessary tools for the analysis of human consciousness. Karl Schönherr (1867-1943) is one of the examples of doctors who chose to practice literature. In the second part of his literary career, Schönherr focuses on exposing the powers of the guild from which he came. At the same time, the former doctor focuses much more than in the pre-war period on social issues and on the analysis of conscience. Our article aims at showing how despite medical studies, some doctors managed to bring literature to a higher level through their writings.

The present study aims to reread in a contemporary key one of the first Romanian grammars Grammaire de la Langue Roumaine par V. Mircesco précedée d un aperçu historique sur la langue roumaine par A. Ubicini, Paris, Maisonneuve et Cie, Libraires éditeurs, 15 Quai Voltaire, 15, 1863 intended for the use of foreign students, made by two personalities of the nineteenth century: A. Ubicini and V. Alecsandri, who signed with the pseudonym V. Mircesco. The study is a specific analysis of how the grammar and its historical context are interpreted now compared to the past. A key part of the rereading might be how the original grammar viewed the Romanian language, and how that approach is different from modern understandings of the language. The pedagogical aims intended for foreign learners, suggests a focus on making the language accessible to those who were not native speakers. The study looks at how effective this approach was, and whether the pedagogical methods used in the grammar (e.g., explanations, examples, exercises) would still be relevant today or if there are more effective ways to teach Romanian to non-native speakers. Both V. Alecsandri (Mircesco) and A. Ubicini were influential figures in 19th-century Romania. Their perspectives on language might reflect the political, cultural, and intellectual currents of the time. The study examines their role in shaping the image of Romanian as a language that could be both modernized and standardized, perhaps in the context of a broader European linguistic movement. From comparative linguistic analysis, a modern interpretation includes examining the role of language standardization processes in the 19th century, which were aimed at shaping a national language, and how those processes might be seen differently today. The study likely provides a modern analysis of how the Grammaire de la Langue Roumaine both reflects and shaped the historical and linguistic context of the time, and contrasts it with contemporary views on the Romanian language.

G. Călinescu’s “Wedding book” was one of the author’s first novels, as he admitted “an exercise” of what G. Călinescu the novelist would become. Therefore, we should not consider the novel worthless just because it represents an exercise, this novel has its own literary value represented by the intellectual quality, the suppleness of taste, the perfect style it was built upon, values also recognized by the literary critics. Addressing the theme of family as the fulfilment of the human being, the novel represents a true monograph of the family as an institution and at the same time a poem of matrimonial love. The foundation for this novel is marriage, with the purpose of creating a family. The very many aspects of family as a literary theme, such as marriage, the conflict between generations, tradition vs. modernity, devotion, etc. are being illustrated in a such an interesting and valuable manner by the author.

METAMORPHOSES OF LOVE IN ELIADESCIAN PROSE

In the prose of Mircea Eliade, complex worlds are built, loaded with symbols and meanings that are revealed gradually to the discerning reader. Eliade’s narratives generally have multiple interpretation keys, obvious in the text, but through which a series of profound, surprising events and experiences are highlighted, which often redefine the way the individual understands the world around him.The theme of full love and transformations through love can be frequently identified in the writer’s work, in different forms which, however, converge towards the idea of love as a way of knowledge and self-knowledge, a gnostic love, which proposes to those involved to leave the horizontal plane and go through some transformative experiences. Eliade’s lovers leave the sphere of everyday life and could open their eyes to a mythical, eternal reality, accessible but only once a series of conditions are met.To illustrate these two poses of lovers in Eliade’s work, we will analyse two of the writer’s novels, Șarpele and Nuntă în cer, with an emphasis on how couples do or do not metamorphose into representations of the Adamic couple. The two narratives capture two different developments in the case of lovers who aspire to be saved from the human condition through love - in the case of the novel Șarpele, Andronic and Dorina, respectively the failure of the lovers in the Nuntă în cer, who miss their chance for happiness because they are, somehow, out of time.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE ROMANIAN GULAG AND THE PRISON LITERATURE OF FORMER INMATES INCARCERATED IN AIUD PRISON

In the article A brief history of the romanian Gulag and the prison literature of former inmates incarcerated in Aiud Prison, I provided a definition of the Gulag from Ruxandra Cesereanu's perspective, inspired by The Gulag Archipelago by Alexandr Soljenițîn, highlighting the shift of this term from a bureaucratic terminology to a symbolic one. The memories of detention possess a high degree of authenticity, and all the writings depicting the hell experienced in communist prisons, along with all the books belonging to the Romanian Gulag, have created a shock among readers. Numerous books have been written on this subject - essays, journals, prison memoirs, recollections, volumes of poetry, prose, novels, and studies. I emphasized that after the 1989 Revolution, fiction and literature were increasingly replaced by numerous memoirs, journals, autobiographical volumes, and that prison literature began to attract public interest and achieve real success. The testimonies of those who lived through the carceral experience bring forward journals and memoirs that facilitate our imaginary journey to understand the experiences endured by prisoners in communist dungeons. This type of memorialistic writing addresses a closed universe, aims to avoid fictionalization, holds testamentary value, and serves a therapeutic function, as through writing and confession, former detainees seek healing. The testimonies about the carceral experience are written in different styles, with each inmate presenting their experience through the lens of their own subjectivity. This study examines how the carceral imaginary is reflected in the works of writers imprisoned in the Aiud dungeon, as a result of the experiences lived within a space dictated by ideological, political, social, or cultural constraints.

Klara and the sun is an allegorical story that depicts the truth of our contemporary world strongly influenced by the rise of technology and by its immersion in our daily life. Klara is an AF whose major duty is to become good friend for Josie, a little child who represents her generation of children who do not receive enough care from their families because they are too busy, AFs are tutors and protectors of children who live in a much technologized society where feelings are ignored until their human condition is doomed to loneliness. What the family cannot provide must be done by an AF who must be intelligent, able to anticipate the reactions and needs of the child he cares for and capable of love. Throughout the novel, the reader will discover that Klara is more than a sophisticated robot, she learns to understand the human feelings and she reproduces them, as if the feelings gain their own shapes or identifiable concrete structures.

The relationship between Orthodoxy, Romanian spirit and Universality is a topic of deep reflection in Romanian thinking, with significant impact onto national and cultural identity. Nichifor Crainic, Sandu Tudor and the holy father Dumitru Stăniloae offer valuable insights into how the Orthodox faith influences and determines Romanian values, traditions and spirituality, while contributing to an understanding of their role within universality.For Nichifor Crainic, Orthodoxy is a fundamental element of identity, inseparable from Romanian culture and politics. Hence the need for a governance in accordance with Orthodox principles, that is, an ethnocracy. Universality becomes a secondary ideal, determined by the loyalty to the Orthodox and national identity.Conversely, Sandu Tudor views Orthodoxy as a spiritual tradition that transcends politics, universality being a product of national specificity. The holy father Dumitru Stăniloae leans towards an ethical and community vision. Orthodoxy is, in his vision, an integrating force, capable of being open to external influences without losing its essence, through a communion of traditions.

The article examines the fairy tale by M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin “Chizhikov’s Grief.” Up until now, researchers have not taken into account certain significant circumstances when interpreting “Chizhikov’s Grief.” First of all, it is the unusual love and family theme of the tale, which is not characteristic of Saltykov-Shchedrin’s work (moreover, it was repeatedly criticized by him as ‘outdated’); and, secondly, the publication of the tale in the Christmas issue of “Russkie Vedomosti,” which provides reason to consider its text within the “Christmas story” tradition. The theme of love and family and the peculiarities of the poetics of “Chizhikov’s Grief” suggest that the fairy tale contains elements of intertextuality: it “refers” the reader, on the one hand, to the tradition of the naturalistic novel popular in the 1870s - 1880s, and on the other hand - to the Christmas stories by Ch. Dickens. M. E. Saltykov was critical of naturalist writers, opposing them to Ch. Dickens and N. V. Gogol. This contradiction is reflected in the structure of “Chizhikov’s Grief,” where the first part of the tale contains elements of parody of the naturalistic novel’s poetics (i.e., in E. Zola’s work), and the second part resembles the plot model of Dickens’s “Christmas Carol” (the transformation of the “misanthropic hero” who travels the path with “guilt-correction-redemption” as the key milestones). Analyzing the poetics of “Chizhikov’s Grief” allows to understand the author’s concept of the fairy tale: critically comparing the “earthiness” of the naturalist writers and the “idealism” of Ch. Dickens and N. V. Gogol, M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin emphasizes the importance of the ideal component of private life. The problem of love and marriage is resolved in “Chizhikov’s Grief” in the style of the Christmas (Easter) tradition: sublime love revives the dead soul of the hero, while in the tale’s open ending the only positive variant of conflict resolution is the heroes’ acquisition of Christian values: forgiveness and love. Thus, behind the numerous literary contexts, irony and satire, the tale conceals a moral absolute that’s distinctive to the national consciousness; and this absolute was the personal position of M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin.

A Project of Inter-peripheral History of the Romanian Novel: The Polish Case

The main purpose of the article is to identify the most important tendencies in the reception of the Romanian novel in Poland in the 20th and 21st century, thus proposing an original and innovative analysis of the process of the cultural transfer between these two (semi)peripheral cultures. The study focuses on a complete corpus of 95 novels written in Romanian (also by authors from the Republic of Moldova) and translated into Polish between 1931 and 2023, providing a new and comprehensive perspective on a complex issue such as an interperipheral literary exchange. The paper uses statistical and computational methods to conduct a sociological study of literature, thus exploring the social, political, and cultural circumstances that influenced the evolution of the reception of the Romanian novel in Poland, also characterizing the agencies of this phenomenon (writers and translators). Moreover, it attempts to situate the regional Polish case into a broader, global context of the reception of the Romanian novel during the last century.

The article aims to illustrate that the entire work of Mateiu I. Caragiale, particularly his only novel, Gallants of the Old Court, recuperates as a horizon of possibility the adventure novel in an embryonic-synthetic, concentrated form, with its progression remaining in a state of suspension. Within the novel lies an inscription of the adventure novel through various established formulas, alongside an implicit reflection on the interplay between the adventure genre and the novel, regarding the trajectory and the selection enacted by the author in the matters of existence, as well as history. Thus, the literary contribution of Mateiu I. Caragiale facilitates a perspective on the adventure novel as an inexhaustible resource and its transcending towards a higher level where the adventure attains an ontological-identity dimension of epistemological significance, as posited by Giorgio Agamben for our consideration.

Considering the conventional and supposedly objective perspective that gender’s authors do not influence writing or that “literature has no gender”, my paper seeks to challenge this preconception. The aim of my study is to explore how the subgenre of autofiction is intricately influenced by gender. Deeply intertwined with themes of identity and individuality, Romanian autofiction, which has been significantly shaped by its French counterpart, has developed within a framework of masculine and patriarchal thought and expression. My primary argument is that the pervasive “masculine dominance” (as Pierre Bourdieu called it) within the Romanian literary landscape has both supported and generated self-fictional narratives that reflect misogyny and sexism from various angles, thereby contributing to the emergence, and establishment of autofiction. Additionally, the ethical implications of self-fiction – which have sparked controversies in both France and Romania – extend beyond the obsolete relationship between facts and fiction; particularly in Romania, it is highlighted how male authors have crafted autofiction while perpetuating dominance and authority, often in regard to women. Beginning with the import of autofiction in post-communist Romania, I critically explore how this subgenre has been received, showing up the paradoxes and limitations of local theoretical discourse on autofiction, which tends to overlook the poststructuralist origins of what seems to be an emancipatory form. Subsequently, I delve into the traditional core of Romanian autofiction by examining its development and the reasons why female authors ultimately dismiss and critique this regulated subgenre, by involving in which could be conceptualise as “self-writing”. Finally, I examine the first Romanian queer-feminist self-writing – Dezrădăcinare [Uprooting] by Sașa Zare.

“Lent Voices”: The Politics of Romanian Migrant Life Writing

This study explores the way Romanian literature written by authors who directly participated in the Romanian emigration to Italy is positioned in the world-literary system, by employing Sarah Brouillette’s concept of “global literary marketplace” and Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek’s idea of “in-between peripherality”. My main argument is that these authors’ marginal position in the literary market is doubled by a reactionary understanding of the function of the literary institution: not as an emancipatory endeavor, but as a site for self-legitimation to the Italian public. Consequently, (semi)autobiographical novels by Romanian badanti in Italy – Lilia Bicec-Zanardelli, Liliana Nechita, and Ingrid Beatrice Coman-Prodan – emphasize migrant exceptionality over solidarity.
