Covid-19 Aftermath for Educational System in Europe. The positives

Covid-19 Aftermath for Educational System in Europe. The positives

Author(s): Filip Nalaskowski / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented severe challenges for European education, forcing an adjustment to distance learning and physical school closures. Many students have encountered problems with online learning, such as a lack of access to appropriate equipment and tools. Nevertheless, the pandemic has also been an opportunity to improve the education system and introduce new, more effective solutions. These changes concern not only the material side of learning but also the psychological one. The introduction of remote learning meant the need to adapt school statutes, expenditures, and educational strategies. Many European countries have introduced additional financial support. However, many others had to cut back on their education spending, which led to financial difficulties for schools and may harm the quality of teaching.Online learning has become a mainstream teaching method but has drawbacks, such as a lack of direct contact with the teacher and peers, technical difficulties, and social isolation. Nevertheless, research shows that the effectiveness of online learning is comparable to traditional teaching, and in some subjects, it may even prove to be better. For example, studies conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic have not shown significant differences in teaching outcomes in Poland.

DEVELOPING DIGITAL COMPETENCE. AN ESSENTIAL SKILL IN REMOTE LEARNING

Author(s): Alexandra Galbin / Language(s): English Issue: 24/2021

The paper brings into discussion the importance of digital competence in education. The paper presents the results of four in-depth interviews with students from Iasi County, conducted in September 2020. Finally, the paper emphasizes the importance of developing digital competence, taking into consideration some actions to improve the remote learning experience, including families, children and school staff, providing thus a quality inclusive education.

OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND? ON THE IMPORTANCE OF MOTIVATING STUDENTS TO KEEP THEIR CAMERAS ON DURING REMOTE LEARNING

Author(s): Diana Stoica / Language(s): English Issue: 24/2021

Teachers are both the architects and the actors of their own classes. They need to both design and plan the tasks, to create safe environments for students and provide resources that help students learn. With the outburst of the Covid-19 pandemic, teachers have faced a brand-new challenge. Compared to the face-to-face classes where teachers depended so much on physical presence and immediacy, teacher presence in online classes depends more on planning, classroom management and organization.

Скок в дигиталното – „за“ или „против“ или „доколко“? Национално проучване на студентските нагласи

Author(s): Elena Blagoeva-Hazerbasanova / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

This paper presents the results of a national survey involving 45 higher education institutions in Bulgaria, which aims to determine students’ attitude towards online learning (OL). The study was conducted in the second half of 2021 and included five factors: Support, Facilitation, Difficulties, Communications, and Technologies. Тhe results show that students still do not have a unified opinion and a firmly formed attitude FOR or AGAINST this type of learning. Approximately half of the respondents support it and have found a way to interact, while the rest do not express support, are dissatisfied with the communication during OL, or have no opinion; over ¾ find it facilitating and declare no problems in dealing with technology; over ⅔ do not consider it difficult. However, the negative opinions expressed and the high percentage of respondents without an opinion indicate that students are not entirely sure whether OL is effective enough and whether they prefer it, especially master’s students and those living in the city of the educational institution. Students who live in settlements far from the location of the university, as well as those studying for a bachelor’s degree share rather supportive opinions regarding all factors. When asked, however, whether they would recommend it, only 25% of all respondents agreed, i.e. their behaviour did not match their opinion. The emerging trends are specific to the Bulgarian environment and should not be ignored when developing or updating higher education policies, both at the national and institutional levels.

PERCEPŢII ALE PERSONALULUI ACADEMIC CU PRIVIRE LA EDUCAŢIA ONLINE ÎN TIMPUL PANDEMIEI DE COVID-19

Author(s): Reka Kutasi / Language(s): English,Romanian Issue: 1/2023

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has prompted the closure of educational institutions worldwide. As a result, most educational institutions shifted to online learning platforms to keep up with instructional activities. This study aims to determine how teachers perceive the online teaching and learning context at the George Emil Palade University of Medicine, Pharmacy, Science, and Technology of Târgu Mureş (UMPhST), Romania. An online questionnaire was created in Google Forms and sent to the academic staff at the university to evaluate the efficacy, drawbacks, and benefits of online education. A total of 139 faculty members from different departments completed the questionnaire thoroughly. According to the findings, more than half of those questioned agreed that online teaching is essential during pandemic times, but it is not a long-term solution. The difficulty of engaging students in practical activities, the lack of feedback, and the difficulty in fulfilling online assignments are just some of the challenges that were brought about. Furthermore, the survey identifies the traits of online courses the respondents preferred and additional challenges they encountered throughout this demanding time.

Преподавателски стратегии за стимулиране на активното учене и развиване на умението говорене на английски език в онлайн среда

Author(s): Polina Emanuilova / Language(s): English,Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

Beginning to speak a foreign language takes much longer than mastering the same skill in the native one. Among others, a possible factor for this is the lack of sufficient listening to foreign speech and of personally engaging conversation practice situations. This in turn could lead to a lack of confidence in pronunciation, difficulty in generating correct grammatical structures, and insufficient lexical diversity. The online environment gives the chance to compensate for the above deficiencies by ensuring practice of the linguistic aspects of speech, as well as a maximum number and types of situations to train speaking both inside and outside the classroom, whereas the instructor’s intervention aims at actively involving the learner in the learning process. Having formulated a definition of the concept of strategy, and by using the three modes of communication in foreign language teaching as a unifying framework – interpretative, presentational, and interpersonal (according to the ACTFL classification) – the article outlines some of the possible strategies an instructor could use to stimulate active learning and develop speaking skills in online English language training.

Teachers' technological competencies and challenges of using google classroom during emergency remote teaching

Author(s): Amal Al Badi,Ahmed Al Kharusi,Asma Al Kalbani,Mahmoud Al Mayahi / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2023

The study focuses on the competencies and challenges of using the Google Classroom platform in Emergency Remote Teaching (ERT) during the Covid 19 pandemic. The study followed a descriptive research design where two hundred and ten teachers responded to a questionnaire containing three categories: teachers' competencies, challenges faced by teachers, and teachers' attitudes. The findings showed that the teachers' competency in using the Google Classroom platform was at a high degree, with results middling when regarding the challenges faced by teachers using Google Classroom. There were no statistically relevant differences at the level of significance (α≤0.05) in the competencies of teachers' use of the Google Classroom due to the variables of gender and work experience. Teachers' attitudes about using Google classroom were high. However, the results indicate a need for conducting effective training for teachers to overcome certain challenges. In addition, there is a requirement to provide the infrastructure for communication networks and consistent Internet access, while also providing alternative assessment methods.
