Grigore Moldovan was born in 1845 in a Romanian family with origins in Moldova, settled in Transylvania. Though he completed his studies in Hungarian language, he became a professor of Romanian language and literature, and carried out a vast and productive activity as a Transylvanian philologist, ethnographer and folklorist. He has served briefly as Dean and Rector of the Cluj University. During his whole life, he has been firmly committed to the ideal of reconciliation between Romanians and Hungarians, aiming to foster the mutual recognition of the two cultures. He has published dozens of articles and several volumes in Hungarian language, which present the Romanian culture and literature to the Hungarian public. His endeavor has been condemned by Romanian nationalists and eventually he has been excommunicated from the Romanian cultural elite. The present article offers a brief overview of his activity based on his unpublished memories and the list of his publications in Hungarian journals.
