Novelist Helene Pflitsch is thematically placed alongside Radu Aldulescu, Camelia Cavadia, Ioana Nicolaie, Simona Popescu and others. Torturous images of times not so long ago are presented by the careful and sensitive eye of a creator of plots and characters with destinies that are difficult for today's young people to understand. Adults and youth who had a childhood full of material deprivation, lived in broken families, with parents always searching for a profitable business, “a perfect house”, or become vicious when their dreams fall apart, here the novel's theme “Let go of Yesterday”. Helene Pflitsch captures their sufferings, fears, transformations or breakdowns due to the adverse impact of adults on children. In a small provincial town in Transylvania, “the children of the photographer and Oly-drunk” (Pflitsch 2022: 102) live their traumas and consume their energies until exhaustion. Childhood trauma is well outlined and follows an identifiable construct in writings of this kind, the tragedies in the photographer's family being presented by following the destiny of each member, which is undoubtedly heading towards division, identity extinction and, most importantly, loneliness.

The book Critical Theory and Authoritarian Populism edited by Jeremiah Morelock was published by University of Westminster Press in 2018. It is not only a recent, but also an extremely up-to-date publication due to the subject matter. The 299-page volume is divided into three chapters: “Theories of Authoritarianism”, “Foundations of Authoritarianism”, and “Digital Authoritarianism.” Within each of these, three, or in the case of the first chapter, four sections can be distinguished. Below, I will present the main themes of the book with reference to the political situation in Poland and Europe. From the pedagogical point of view, the developmental and educational implications of the issues discussed seem particularly important.

Modernity and the Holocaust is now thirty years old. How should we respond to the book, its controversy, and its history or context? In this essay I offer three steps as a way into this labyrinth. First, I review the core claims of Bauman’s book (1989). Second, I use my four-volume edited collection of essays on his work (2002) as a decade check on its reception. Third, the new volume, Revisiting Modernity and the Holocaust: Heritage, Dilemmas, Extensions (2022) is brought into play as a third optic or time slice. I conclude that the book is a classic, which means we should still read it and use it as a marker, but also that the debate has out of necessity moved on. As Bauman used to say, “The dogs bark, the carnival moves on”.

The presented text consists of two parts. The first is a review of Janina Gesche’s book devoted to the German-speaking winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature in the first half of the twentieth century. Gesche not only meticulously reconstructed the activities of the Swedish Academy, but also showed the cultural German-Swedish relations in this period against a broad background. The second part shows the activities of Carl David af Wirsén (1842–1912), who as secretary of the Academy had a huge impact on who will be honored with the award. Wirsén’s attempt to create his own rules for granting the Nobel Prize ended in failure, as shown by the theory of Pierre Bourdieu.

The article discusses ancient philosophical sources for humourism. It focuses on the philosophical context described in the first chapter of Beata Wojciechowska’s book Flebotomia i purgowanie, czyli o leczeniu w wiekach średnich [Phlebotomyand purging, or about medical treatment in the Middle Ages]. The author briefly points out the differences between the Epicurean, Stoic, Peripatetic and Academic positions on the nature of the soul, its relation to the body and the universe.

In April 2022, which today slips away from the being, but not the memory of the human individual, there were several dates of all three monotheistic faiths that rarely occur in exactly one month. Although in Bosnia and Herzegovina, it could be like that every month due to its religious interwinement that is forcibly unraveled by the butchers of Balkan nationalisms. One date is the eighth of April, which the United Nations declared Roma Day, who wander around the world, religions and languages, but also unconsciously preserving something of the civilization from their ancestral homeland of India.
