Thomas Hardy, one of the greatest British novelists, from the late 19th and early 20th century during his lifetime was known only to a small number of intellectuals from the region of our linguistic areas. His most famous novel Tess of the d 'Urbervilles or pure woman, was translated into Croatian only in 1936, and this year may be considered as the year when Hardy entered into our culture. This paper presents all the reviews, critical reviews and articles about Hardy and his works, published in literary criticism and periodicals in the region of the former Yugoslavia since the first mention of his name until the Second World War, which were written in Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian language. The reader, on the basis of all these articles about Hardy as a novelist and poet can as well get an image of him as a man, as a thinker and as a critic of his time, which has not been much changed even by the contemporary literary criticism.

Ahıska is in the south western part of the Caucasia in the Georgian lands. In the north and east of Ahıska lies Georgia; in the south lies Armenia, in the south western lies Turkey; in the west lies autonomous Ajarian Republic. The motherland of Ahıska Turks having been settled in the region from 16th century to the Russian conquest in 1828 and having been inseparable part of the Anatolian Turks is the Ahıska region, which is in territories of Georgia and the neighbour of Türkiye today. To some researchers the reason of why the Turks having settled there are called as “Ahıska Turks” stems from the fact that the geographical name of the region that covers those provinces is Ahıska. According to some, Ahıska “Ak-Sıka” (Ak Kale) in Dede Korkut and mentioned as “Akesga” in the records of the year 481 is the Turkish and Persian form of “Akhal-Tsikhe” which means “the New Castle” in Georgian. After the region had been under the Ottoman sovereignty for 250 years it went under the domination of Russia with the treaty of Adrionaple (Edirne) having been signed in 1829. This study is based on the observations and researches of the English traveler, John F. Baddeley related to Ahıska in the work titled as “The Russian Conquest of the Caucasus” published in 1908. The purpose of the study is to discuss and evaluate the information given by Baddeley as to how the Russia managed to conquer the Caucasia, especially Ahıska and make some contributions to the field of literature. Thus, it is aimed to enlighten the history of the Ahıska region and the Ahıska Turks, who have deep historical root and bond with Turkey.

This essay is inspired by a close reading of the recently published volume Żołnierze ludowego Wojska Polskiego. Historie mówione (Soldiers of the Polish people’s Army. Oral histories) by Jarosław Pałka and Kaja Kaźmierska (Łódź, 2018) and continuously refers to it. Rather than a standard book review, it is a critical essay which positions this publication, and the documentation project standing behind it, in the context of Polish oral history research field. The latter has been expanding dynamically in recent years, gaining more and more recognition also among academic historians. One of its essential characteristics, to which this volume attests, is its methodological anchoring in biographical sociology. This field of research has a long academic tradition in Poland (though its current versions tend to adopt ‘Western’ ideas and research patterns) and offers scientific credibility to, still often insecure, oral history research. The text claims that scientific legitimisation of this kind does not necessarily lead to a convincing interpretation. The method, no matter how neutrally it may be presented, is not free from the authors’ value judgements and non-source-based historical knowledge (and imagination). The text, therefore, suggests a reading of the book – which is vastly a selection of edited, historically footnoted and narratively ordered oral history sources (biographical narrative interviews with the title soldiers) – that partly goes against the authors’ interpretations. Altogether, it makes up an exercise in (oral) historical hermeneutics.

In this essay the author reflects on a monograph by Krzysztof Łęcki, Według Tukidydesa. Rozważania socjologa literatury nad ‘Wojną peloponeską’ [According to Thucydides: Reflections on the Sociological Literature about The Peloponnesian War] (2019), and seeks themes in it that extend beyond the sociology of literature. He concludes that Łęcki’s analysis convincingly adds to the body of knowledge on Thucydides’s text in philosophy and the sociology of politics. The book touches on many themes relevant to historical sociology or the sociological (and politological) understanding of rules governing the mechanisms of politics and international relations.

This review discusses the content of Mateusz Hohol’s new book Foundations of Geometric Cognition. Mathematical cognition has until now focused mainly on human numerical abilities. Hohol’s work tackles geometric cognition, an issue that has not been described in previous investigations into mathematical cognition. The main strength of the book lies in its critical analysis of a huge amount of results from empirical experiments. The author formulates his theoretical proposals very carefully, avoiding radical and one-sided solutions. He claims that human geometric cognition is based mainly on two core systems, both being phylogenetically hardwired, namely the system of layout geometry and the system of object geometry. The interaction of these systems becomes amplified in the individual development of the mind, which, in turn, is supported by the use of language. The second part of the review contains the reviewer’s remarks concerning the history of geometry, experiments related to spatial representations, and the role of geometry in mathematical education.

The article deals with a monograph by Magdalena Luszczynska devoted to Marcin Czechowic, one of the most important anti-Trinitarian theologians of the late sixteenth century. The article sets the book against the backdrop of literature on the anti-Trinitarians in Poland and studies of Czechowic. While criticizing the monograph for its narrow source and methodological basis, it offers a new look at the key aspects of the theologian’s life. The central thesis of the article is that the category of religious awareness allows for a different approach to this Protestant’s conversion.
