Palgrave Macmillan Publishing House contributions on Global/International Theatre and Performance topics continued in 2021 by a new title 20 Ground-Breaking Directors of Eastern Europe edited by Kalina Stefanova and Marvin Carlson. The book is an important sign taken into consideration by its authors, especially since the theatre, in the last year and a half, has been one of the areas most affected by pandemic situation. Setting the spotlight on the twenty Eastern European stage directors represents a significant gesture in the very diverse landscape, always self-reflective in terms of status in the new context and in which the boundaries between the arts dissipate. The value of such complex studies grows both because they are momentary photographs, as well as a settlement in recent history with directions that foresee the future crossed by a thrill of insecurity.

This paper is a review of Aleksandra Niewiara’s monograph Imagologia – pamięć zbiorowa – umysł i kultura [Imagology – Collective Memory – Mind and Culture]. The volume investigates the nature of collective conceptions of nations in terms of ethnolinguistic imagology. It consists of a theoretical part (“Concepts of Nations in the Light of Cognitive Studies on Culture”), an analytical part (examining verbal and visual data) and a comparative part, which discusses ways of constructing ideas about nations as cultural conceptualisations: networks of concepts present in the minds of members of a community (and therefore also representatives of a culture). Concepts of nations have thus far been considered a static and fragmentary category. The reviewed monograph shows this category as an element of the network of culture, which reflects the basic image schemas and – like any part of culture – changes over time.

Yves Baticle and Christophe Pavie, both trainers of young teachers in connection with the INSPÉ (Institut National Supérieur du Professorat et de l’Éducation) of the University of Caen, Normandy, France, come to us with a method of didactic approach to writing by the creation of a novel. Dedicated to students aged 8 to 12, this book can expand its target audience up to 18 years. Based on specialized sources as well as on the didactic experience of the authors, the book proves to be an important tool not only for the teacher of French as a mother tongue, but also for any other teacher who would like to apply this method with another mother tongue. This “two-handed” work devoted to adults, and therefore to teachers, includes nine chapters, the first three explaining the principles and the steps to follow, the importance of a brief perspective on the genre. The other six propose “6 totally independent courses of writing a cooperative novel”, through the treatment of “6 fundamental themes which resonate with the novel from school to high school: the theater, the fable, the letter, poetry, music and history” (10). Each course indicates “the core competences at work” (10), in a multidisciplinary approach.

The title of the reviewed anthology illustrates in a perfect way the feelings to be guessed beyond the written lines. Nowadays’ events are deeply perceived like boundaries to freedom and a return to fundamental values of humanity as well. The authors of the short texts belong to different fields of activity, they come from different backgrounds, they have different ages. Their multiple ways of living the Covid 19 experience generally find similar solutions for getting out of the darkened scenery of everyday life under the sign of empathy and the interest for the good and the beautiful. Voices coming from different parts of the world reunite to let the need for humanity and value speak. Some voices present in this anthology underline the importance of consciousness and the recognition of a supreme force of faith giving sense to life and governing one’s existence. Other voices show, somehow following a similar path, that human beings may find relief in art. In one way or the other, the anthology whose editors are Maria Vesa, Sonia Elvireanu, Brândușa Tămaș and Rodica Gabriela Chira comes in front of the readers with different possible solutions for challenging times. Personal reflections on space and time are regrouped under a same dome, the one testifying that humanity was not prepared to cross such times inscribed between the agony of an existence and the hope which could make us go on. The reader is invited to pass from innocence to acceptance through texts accompanied by suggestive images. The double cover of the bilingual anthology also is very inspired. A good translation succeeds in transferring messages from one language to another, namely from Romanian into French and vice versa either in verse or in prose.
