The position that Paul B. Armstrong’s Stories and the Brain: The Neuroscience of Narrative finds within the fields of poststructuralist and postcognitive narratology is particularly interesting. While it makes considerable contributions to the collective efforts of establishing an interdisciplinary dialogue between cognitive sciences and the humanities, it does – at the same time, engage in an emphatic critique of similarly oriented theories of narrative. Even though he acknowledges the general shift from a computational model of the mind to “the 4e (embodied, enactive, embedded, and extended) view of cognition” (15), he denounces their lack of synchronization with recent neuroscientific findings on language, cognition, emotion, or narrative comprehension. To him, it appears that, “in their zeal to reject a Cartesian splitting of mind and body” (5), narratologists tend to overlook brain-based research in order to draw instead on psychological or philosophical perspectives.

Laura Pavel’s Characters of Theory, Beings of Fiction is a feat of post-critical thought, single-handedly setting the stage for the advent of “post-theory” in Romanian cultural studies through the development of notions whose life can be extended well outside the realm of the country’s academic output. Innovative concepts and perspectives emerge as Pavel convincingly localizes the tenets of post-theory within the scope of Romanian literature, while also occasionally stepping into international waters, as in an essay on the works of Klaus Obermaier. As imaginative and honest as it is subtle and precise, Characters of Theory, Beings of Fiction works through the political realities underpinning the creation of art in order to shed light on its ontological singularity. Though this undertaking might sound familiar in the wake of the many “turns” in Contemporary cultural studies, Pavel’s lines of inquiry bear strikingly surprising and vital results.

Jewish humor continues to spring interesting scholarly approaches. Only in the past decade this field of research has been enriched with the publication of valuable works by researchers such as Ruth R. Wise, Jeremy Dauber, or Louis Kaplan. Arie Sover’s latest book contributes to the field by revisiting the most commonly discussed aspects of Jewish humor, nuancing some popular claims regarding the roots of the Jewish humorous tradition, and updating the canon traditionally used for the exploration of the various manifestations of Jewish humor.
