The issue of credibility becomes especially pronounced in times of crises, which characteristically abound in the unknown, uncertainty, and doubt. Such crises are mostly sudden, often complex, and sometimes mired in controversial events. The public subsequently craves more information in times of crises, such that they may obtain more precise guidance, and ease their ability to cope. Given the relatively low frequency of crisis situations, most people lack actual experience relevant to a given predicament. The appearance of Virus A (H1N1) at the onset of 2009 is one such case. Despite H1N1’s classification as a broad-scale, serious health hazard, preventive vaccinations failed to reach a large segment of the population. We contend that the lack of credibility in informing the public through the media contributed considerably to this failure. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to determine the level of credible information provided by the print media from which the general public could have taken an informed position on the crisis in question. Quantitative research and content analysis ascertained from a body of print media sources with national coverage reveals that the Croatian print media, contrary to our expectations, largely rely on official sources and transparently cite authors, which contributes to a higher degree of credibility. Yet further analysis of the number of sources suggests that most journalists used on average only one or no named sources, which significantly reduces the credibility of the published articles.

This examination assesses the various data linking Croatian newspaper reporting to the activities of mine-clearing in Croatia, with particular emphasis given to the principles bestowed by the international fight against landmines. The analysis includes 242 newspaper articles published between 2005 and 2007 in nine selected daily newspapers (Večernji list, Jutarnji list, Vjesnik, 24 sata, Slobodna Dalmacija, Glas Slavonije, Novi list, Zadarski list and Karlovački list). In culling the dana from these various reports, topics have been categorized according to the international principles of the fight against landmines in order to determine the extent to which Croatian newspapers allotted to promoting this campaign. The topic framework and the prevalence of certain topics were explored in order to draw attention to all of the various aspects of reporting on the landmine campaign. The analysis reveals that the most represented topic concerns the advocacy against using mines. A smaller portion of topics concerned landmine education and the threats they impose, which suggests that public relations services are not sufficiently utilized in collaborating with the media. Corporate social responsibility reporting on the campaign against landmines implies a constant communication between the profession that deals with landmine action and the media.

Within the various countries of southeastern Europe, one may find various examples where student radio stations are promoted. In 2009, there was no specialized radio stations aimed at the student population in Serbia. In fact, there were only a handful of radio programs that were prepared by journalism students. On the contrary, in countries like Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Hungary, there are a number of specialized radio stations whose primary target group is the student population, including Radio Študent in Ljubljana, Radio Student in Zagreb, Studentski radio BB in Split, Studentski eFM radio in Sarajevo, and Radio Mi Szeged. As such, the aim of this study is to suggest the best model for sustainable student radio programming and make recommendations for future opportunities of cooperation among journalism students in the region. The future of student radio stations in Serbia, which function as a part of the state university system, is not certain, although more stations can be found today than in 2009.

Redovitost objavljivanja isprika, ispravaka i reagiranja čitatelja pokazuje u kojoj mjeri novine poštuju svoje čitatelje i koliko je redakcijama uopće stalo do njegovanja društveno odgovornog novinarstva.

The first decade of the 21st century has brought about comprehensive changes for media and communications in general. The new multimedia landscape has broken traditional boarders between telecommunications, the audiovisual industry, and information technology. Still, the border between traditional and new media is quite defined, yet there exists a tendency to mitigate it. Changes in media content production will play the dominant role in that process, as well the fact that the three-step flows of communication encompass new configurations of one-to-one, one-to-many, and many-to-many communication across the online/offline divide. In such processes of development and transformation, video content, once reserved exclusively for film and television using the one-way channel of communication (from content provider to viewers), now plays an increasingly important role. New media provides opportunities for video content to use three-step flows of communication, which subsequently enables space for new video genres and formats. This article presents the results of the study entitled, ”Media Accountability”, and compares them with the author’s own research on television news and with Forrester’s research on youth as a media audience. Finally, this article provides insights on the future of television as a medium and its existence as a traditional medium.

Sources of information used by mass media for presenting events are among the key criteria in evaluating news credibility, whether the credibility is perceived from recipients’ or professionals’ perspectives. The aim of this research is to determine the credibility of TV news in terms of professional imperatives of objectivity, whereas the majority of research on this issue centers on media credibility evaluated from the perspective of the intended audiences. Considering the fact that audience perception is strongly influenced by its (dis)affinity for a specific media, particularly in B&H, we consider the analysis from the professional standards to be more objective. The goal of the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the contests emitted on primetime news programs of two public and one commercial TV stations in B&H is to determine how credible and reliable the news was as well as its overall objectivity and fairness. The results reveal that the differences were not most evident between the public and commercial TV stations, but rather between the entity televisions despite the fact that they belong to the same RTV system. Coverage of the same events on the three TV stations indicates that the reports were based primarily on one-sided and biased sources.

Only a perfunctory glance at the content of current aff airs/news programs makes it clear that in just a few years time, live reporting on Croatian TV news shows has increased dramatically. Technological advancements, the equipping of TV stations with mobile satellite vans, and the pressure of competition have all resulted in increased instances of live reporting. When investigating news values, picture and sound, as well as the possibility of immediate, timely reporting represent the key characteristics of TV journalism. In this context, live reports, as part of a news segment, should add to the authenticity and credibility of the program. Currently, however, TV broadcasting houses attempt to best one another in the number of live broadcasts as a means to purport a higher quality of their program. The direct address to the camera turns a reporter from an anonymous bearer of information into the “main star”. The figures accumulated on the extent of this form used in a news show do not determine the professional level of the editorial policy. Live reporting cannot be regarded as news value if other news values are neglected in the process. Recent research shows that live reports, in most cases, have been stripped of the initial notion of reporting on important and recent events. As such, they are becoming less of a justifi ed element in the creation of news.

In the last week of October 2016, Pharmacy Museum in Lisbon hosted threeday Symposium on the History of Health Sciences: Phármakon. ‘From the Combat of infi rmity to the invention of immortality’ (Congresso de História das Ciências da Saúde: Phármakon. Do combato da enfermidade à invençao da imortalidade). It is one of the most distinguished cultural institutions of Lisbon located in Alfama district, renowned for their impressive collection of artefacts related to 50 centuries of history of pharmacy in civilizations from Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Rome, Greece, Islam, South America, China, Tibet, Japan, Africa to Modern Europe. Symposium was organized by Prometheus Institute from Lisbon in collaboration with several prominent scientifi c and academic university institutions from Portugal: Instituto IPAEHI – Associação para Estudos Históricos Interdisciplinares, CIDH-Cátedra Infante Dom Henrique Para os Estudos Insulares Atlânticos e a Globalização at University of Alberta, CITCEM-Transdisciplinary Research Cenre/Centro de Investigação Interdisciplinar, CLEPUL-Research Centre of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon/Centro de Literaturas e Culturas Lusófonas e Europeias da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, National Pharmacy Association and Pharmacy Museum, and IECC PMA − Instituto Europeu de Ciências da Cultura Padre Manuel Antunes. Unconventional, but nonetheless attractive idea of the organizers was to host an interdisciplinary symposium based on primarily thorough historical research of participants, and to encompass overall humanities (and arts) and social sciences medical debates on the health sciences. It was a resounding success.
