Author(s): Sanja Vrcić Mataija / Language(s): Croatian Issue: 13/2015

Considering the position of the dominant narrative figure within the Croatian children's realistic novel of the nineties of the last century it is possible to define type of the family novel that belongs to social-psychological fiction. Narrative pattern of the family children's novel implies a story of the family atmosphere in which adult characters appear alongside with children's characters equal to them at the narrative level, portraying the adult and children's characters and a way of building their identity in a family community of different types. Children's characters create their personality strongly influenced by family relationships and characters of their parents and relatives, modeling their activity on them as well as adopting gender standardized roles. The traditional and contemporary family relationships could be recognized according the prevailing world view on the selected corpus of the novel. Unlike the traditional family, which includes parents and children, strong family, mostly male authority, more liberal attitude of the weaker parental authority prevails in the majority of contemporary families. It is possible to identify several forms of a family novel: family novel with a picture of the traditional patriarchal family, family novel with a picture of contemporary patriarchal family and family novel with a picture of contemporary liberal family.

Poszukując obrazu historii. Średniowiecze we francuskiej sztuce XVIII stulecia

Author(s): Szymon Cierpisz / Language(s): Polish Issue: XIII/2015

The aim of this article is to show some basic iconographical problems that early modern artists had when they wanted to present a historical theme in their works. Despite the growing number of articles and books focusing on the historical consciousness and reflection on the history in the early modern times, we still observe a deficiency in analyses of a visual side of the history in art. Basing on several catchy judgments of Vasari or Moliere, it is often said that since the Renaissance, the Middle Ages with their art and culture were at least neglected, if not despised. We can state however that both artists and aesthetes often underlined importance of old artworks, which has been expressed clearly by Bernard de Mountfacon, who in the preface to his great work describing French monuments wrote that they “help to enlighten history and customs of the first kings”.

Eski çağda çift başli kartal sembolü üzerine kisa bir değerlendirme (Mezopotamya, Anadolu, Orta Asya)

Author(s): Fazıl Himmetoğlu / Language(s): Turkish Issue: 33/2017

It is obvious that the double-headed eagle phenomenon has a dualistic meaning. This dualism can be explained as east and west, sky and earth, or the world and beyond. However it is thought that this symbol is religious based. This bird motif appears in Mesopotamia, Anatolia and Central Asian (Turan) mythologies. It is probable that origin of this bird in Mesopotamia is lion-headed bird-bodied Anzu. This bird may be transformed to double-headed eagle in Assyrian culture after the Sumerians. This symbol is came by Assyrian merchants to Anatolia. The double-headed human-bodied an eagle figurines is found in the Central Asia. The eagle is İmportant in old Turkish culture. In fact, the legendary double headed eagle was believed to be the presence of Öksökö. Similarly it had respected to a legendary creatures called as Simurg in Iran geography. Taki mały, taki duży może świętym być. Proces mitologizacji Todora Tose Proeskiego w macedońskiej kulturze popularnej

Taki mały, taki duży może świętym być. Proces mitologizacji Todora Tose Proeskiego w macedońskiej kulturze popularnej

Author(s): Piotr Majewski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 04/2012

In this article, I analyzed the discourses devoted to the Macedonian national hero, Todor "Toše" Proeski. This twenty-six-year-old singer and star of the Macedonian pop scene with the day of his death became the greatest national good of the Macedonians. The social image of Proeski is constructed at every level of public discourse (from popular culture to high culture) and by almost all its participants, both those privileged (clerics, journalists, intellectuals and politicians), as well as "ordinary" citizens. In the methodological concept used by me, Proeska was treated as an example of the "emblem of nationality", in other words as „national form of representation". These "emblems" or "forms" allow individuals and groups to identify with the "imagined community" and legitimize the concept of the nation.

THE CULT OF PERSONALITY IN SOME ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS: MENTALITIES AND COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES

THE CULT OF PERSONALITY IN SOME ANCIENT CIVILIZATIONS: MENTALITIES AND COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES

Author(s): Mădălina Streche / Language(s): English Issue: 2/2015

In the ancient world, the personality of the leader had an extraordinary impact on mentalities. In many ancient civilizations, the cult of the state leader was similar to the cult of the gods. The first expression of the so-called personality cult of the state leader was in the Ancient Orient, where the leader was either sent by the gods or a god himself on earth, the son of the gods or a divine agent of the gods on earth. In the western part of the ancient world, the leader was more of a model, a hero, but also the first of all citizens in democratic regimes. A particular case is Sparta where the leader which had a cult was the state itself. In most Indo-European civilizations, the cult of personality was political and military in nature, rather than mystical and religious, as was the case in the major civilizations of the Ancient Orient, such as Sumer, Babylon, Assyria, Egypt, India and China. The oriental personality cult was taken over in the classical Western world, especially in the case of the Roman super-power where “the first of all citizens” - Princeps is also the godlike Divus, or Pater Patriae. The cult of the leader in Antiquity was taken over in almost all historical eras, being the proof of a neutral paradigm that has undergone little change today. If in ancient times the leader was sent by the gods, a superman, nowadays the leader is a charismatic figure (a word coming from the Greek and meaning ‘with divine charm’) proving that little has been changed over the millennia. In Antiquity and now, power has always made use of communication.

Typology of Game Principles in Digital Games: A Case Study of Mafia III

Author(s): Zuzana Bučková / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2019

The presented study dwells on the issue of game theory by Roger Caillois to be applied to the contemporary dimension of digital games. The actual attempt is to find out the extent to which the game principle categories apply to media products, i.e. digital games. The paradigms by authors engaged in cultural anthropology, philosophy, psychology, and sociology, besides others, served as key theoretical groundwork for the present paper. Nevertheless, the theories concluded within media study addressing the game and game principles in contemporary society have not been excluded either. In essence, the theoretical reflection introduces the basic terminology axis creating an apt platform for the game variants in use, to perform within the forms of new reality, i. e. virtual reality. The primary aim is to define elementary concepts like “game”, “game principles”, “media or virtual space”, “digital game”, and “game genres”. Secondary is then to explicate certain game principles designated by Roger Caillois present in the particular game. Material to be applied for this study ranks among the genre of action games. “Action game” particularly is a digital genre that belongs to frequent genre types as well as RPG games, strategy and others. Drawing from this fact, one of the actual digital games called Mafia III was chosen for empirical study. The main purpose of the paper is through logical analysis to illustrate the issue of games, and subsequently point out the cases of their occurrence in the media space. Theoretical postulates by Roger Caillois are by author assumed to be potentially applicable to the current media reality of digital games that come under action genres.

Российская художественная интеллигенция и думская практика 1906—1907 годов

Author(s): Alexei Vyacheslavovich Zyablikov / Language(s): Russian Issue: 2/2019

The changed political reality — the establishment of the State Duma in Russia in 1906 — made active a public discussion about a ratio of guarding and liberal elements in business of the state arrangement. The idea of naturalness and «the rule of law» of the autocratic power found unexpected refraction in consciousness of the art elite trying to comprehend the value and functions of new political institute, to understand a measure of its historical correctness. Based on the principles of historicism and system, applying tools of historical-genetic and historical-comparative methods, the author reveals evolution of perception by artists and literature of realities of the Duma practice of 1906—1907. Interest in new state institute in many respects was defined by hopes for civil consent, political and cultural and moral improvement of the Russian life. One of the main functions of the Duma seemed to artists in peacemaking and search of conciliatory line between various political forces and opinions, at unconditional respect for traditions of the Russian statehood, religion, culture. Without denying importance and political importance of new institute, figures of the Russian culture noted such evident qualities of the Duma practice as tendency to a phrase mongering and “theatrical” effects, inability to offer a part of political ambitions for the sake of nation-wide need, the aspiration to approve a policy priority over culture, claims for spiritual one-man management. Moderate conservatives (Octobrists) who could undertake search of balance of interests were slow and shy. The increasing public skepticism concerning opportunities of the State Duma to become the instrument of national reconciliation and consent became a result of the Duma impressions of 1906—1907.
