Przełamywanie milczenia. Przemiany sposobów prezentacji problematyki LGBT+ we współczesnej prozie słowackiej

Author(s): Rafał Majerek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2022

In Slovakia after the Velvet Revolution of 1989 groups previously marginalized and discriminated against in the communism era, including the LGBT+ community, began activities aimed at obtaining full civil rights and developing forms of cultural representation. Gradually, the issues of non-heteronormativity began to appear in various areas of culture. As regards prose texts, which are the basis for the reflections presented in this paper, non-heteronormativity was initially portrayed in a stigmatizing, stereotype-based manner. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the dominant approach has been to expose the problem of LGBT+ people living in the closet, hiding their identity due to the homophobia in the society; the sphere of intimacy is considered as the only one that allows a sense of security and the free expression of affection and desire. In more recent works, examples of characters who have come out of the closet and have no problems with functioning openly in the family and social contexts begin to appear. The specificity of Slovak fiction featuring the themes of non-heteronormativity lies mainly in the lack of works of a clearly emancipatory nature, the domination of stories focused on intimate relations between women, and only occasionally introducing gay or transgender themes.

The following text takes up the problem of modernity in its canonical formulation proposed in 1863 by Charles Baudelaire in his important essay entitled Le peintre de la vie moderne. The author of the article tries to show the basic framework of this concept with the definition of modernity itself and the category of beauty, remaining at Baudelaire’s conception in natural connection with it. The author highlights the importance of Baudelaire’s earlier views and the influence that the Paris World Exhibition of 1855 had on him.

Fandom Gry o tron. Władza i kultura w środowiskach fanowskich

Author(s): Katarzyna Piórecka / Language(s): Polish Issue: 14/2023

Fans represent a shift in media consumption, and their patterns of behaviour are increasingly visible outside their communities, in other groups. With the observed shift towards a network society, of which fandoms are an emanation, the field of social conflict begins to operate within culture. Cultural power over media products no longer belongs only to the creators, but is also influenced by the users, who cease to passively consume products, creatively interpreting them and engaging in their development. The aim of the article was to show this process on the example of content analysis of internet entries created within the environment of the Game of Thrones fandom, including speculations which the fans of the brand carried out in the context of the plot development.

Media w konflikcie interesów? Analiza deklaracji misji oraz sytuacji finansowej wybranych stacji radiowych

Media w konflikcie interesów? Analiza deklaracji misji oraz sytuacji finansowej wybranych stacji radiowych

Author(s): Anna Teler / Language(s): Polish Issue: 14/2023

In the presented work, new opportunities were sought to address conflicts of interest in the media industry. It was considered, according to Dennis Thompson’s definition, that a conflict of interest is a series of circumstances and a legitimate concern that a secondary objective will affect the primary one. The primary interest refers to the primary, even statutory goals of the media business, namely the fulfilment of the social mission, while the secondary interest includes personal benefit. It seems that in the media, profit should not be the primacy – rather, it should be a certain prism. The purpose of the article is to formulate a certain proposal, based on the renegotiation of the current state. A so-called third way (relative to non-profit and for-profit activities) is proposed, which is worth further discussion. To this end, an analysis of the financial situation and an analysis of the declared mission of selected media entities was conducted: radio stations such as BBC Radio, WWOZ, WRBH. Careful tracing of these two dimensions (mission and finances) makes it possible to deepen the discourse related to the conflict of interest. It also provides a proposal for renegotiating beliefs about the media business in general. For the purpose of the article and research objective, the research question was formulated: Does the media have to choose between profit and social mission? The obtained research results and the discussion of the results do not allow to answer the research question in the affirmative. With this, it can be assumed that media organizations do not have to choose between profit and social mission. The changing situation of the BBC in the coming years, including BBC Radio, requires further observation and verification of whether the British broadcaster will become a recognized and recognized case of combining profit with mission, perhaps even in a sustainable and inclusive way.

Factors in National Self-Designation of Slavic Muslims in the Montenegrin Sandžak

Author(s): Mehmed Đečević,Danijela Vuković-Ćalasan / Language(s): English Issue: 03/2023

National fragmentation of Slavic Muslims in the Montenegrin area of the Sandžak region into Bosniaks and national Muslims was recorded in the last two population censuses in Montenegro, with minor differences in the two sets of results. Therefore, the following question emerges: what are the social and political factors, prevalent in the Montenegrin area of the Sandžak region, that drive national self-identification of Slavic Muslims in this region either towards Bosniakism (national Bosniaks) or national Muslimhood (national Muslims). In the Montenegrin sociopolitical discourse in the relevant period, the social constructs “Bosniak” and “Muslim” have been shaped so that the first ethnonym implies stronger national ties and the tendency to complete one’s national identity through identification with Slavic Muslims outside of Montenegro, while the second ethnonym is closer to Montenegrin state patriotism and the intra-Montenegrin state framework. Empirical material from relevant censuses shows that the tendency of Slavic Muslims in Montenegro to embrace national Bosniakism is not driven by actions of political elites, the proximity and influence of Bosnia, or the ethnic/pre-Islamic origin of this part of the Montenegrin population, but rather by the homogeneity of the population at the municipal level: national Bosniakism is more pronounced in confessionally homogeneous Muslim communities than in those municipalities where Slavic Muslims and Christians live side by side. This finding is interpreted from the perspective of symbolic interactionism: in the confessionally heterogeneous Montenegrin-Sandžak municipalities, we have witnessed self-censorship of Slavic Muslims in terms of their national self-designation, as a result of the need to preserve the positive perceptions held by their Christian fellow citizens. In confessionally homogeneous Muslim municipalities, this factor did not have a major impact, resulting in a significantly large-scale acceptance of national Bosniakism than in those local administrations in the Montenegrin part of the Sandžak region where Slavic Muslims live with the Christian population.

THE ASSOCIATION OF THE ITALIANS FROM ROMANIA IN THE CENTENARY YEAR

THE ASSOCIATION OF THE ITALIANS FROM ROMANIA IN THE CENTENARY YEAR

Author(s): Daniela Iliescu (Pătru) / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 26/2021

Founded in 1993 in Suceava by the descendants of Italian emigrants who came to Bucovina, the Association of Italians in Romania has as its main objective the restoration of the unity of the Italian minority that was seriously damaged during the Communist period. This association, extremely active, according to its statute, operates both in Romania and in Italy. The millennial culture of the ancestors, extraordinary, to which our national history and not only relates, made the members of the Italian ethnic group aspire to the reconstruction of a historical community that built step by step a tradition in our country in the period between the two world wars, a period in which the Italian minority had a major contribution to Romania's development. According to the inherent difficulties, specific to the beginnings, RO.AS.IT. gradually became what it is today: a promoter of the Italian culture and civilization. The events that aimed to promote and preserve the identity of the Italian minority, took place in 2018 under the auspices of the Centenary of the Great Union.

რომანტიზმის ანტირაციონალისტური ბუნება

Author(s): Paata Gergaia / Language(s): Georgian Issue: 1/2022

The role and significance of Romanticism and Classicism as cultural move-ments in terms of aestheticizing and humanizing the world is substantial. And science, too, has long been in collaboration with them:Numerous scientific and literary works on these movements adorn the world cultural treasures. Postmodernism does not lag behind the scientific and literary unity; that is to say, the replenishment of these treasures has not lost its relevance to this day.And I, as a citizen of the modern cultural society, as a rationalist - a member of the “Hegel-Spinoza Club”, will join the discussion with slightly different touches of my own. These different touches evoke an inner feeling in me prompting to spend more time and, more importantly, much more resources on the subject in the future.

ახ.წ. IV-VII საუკუნეებისსამშენებლოკერამიკასამხრეთ-დასავლეთსაქართველოდან

Author(s): Tamaz Darchidze / Language(s): Georgian Issue: 2/2022

The present paper deals with the Ceramic building material (CBM) of 4th-7thcenturies AD found as a result of archaeological works, carried out on different archaeological monuments of south-western Georgia. We are discussing the sig-nificance of the CBM as an archaeological source. It is known that this group of ceramic goods can give a certain idea about the local cultural identity and thus is important in terms of investigation of the urban forms as well. In the present paper we will touch the main groups of CBM discovered recently in Petra Tsikhisdziri, Gonio-Apsaros and the remains of Avgia church, discuss their main characteristics, scope of use, places and techniques of its manufacturing. On the basis of study of materials preserved in the museum funds we managed to determine the main local types and shapes of the flat roof tiles with bent edges and compare them with the contemporary materials. When determining the typology of the flat roof tiles with bent edges, unearthed in the studied region, we mainly followed the principle, already accepted by researchers: the tiles were grouped according to their shapes and sizes of edges. We considered such pronounced characteristics as colour of the pan tile, its structure and dimensions. Considering these characteristics two main groups and four main types of roof tiles have been singled out: type I – high-edge rectangular roof-tiles; II – low-edge rectangular roof-tiles; III - blunt-angle roof-tiles with straight sides; IV - blunt-angle roof-tiles with bent edge. The studied samples differ from each other by the outline of the bent edge, colour, structure and dimensions of the pan tile. This proves that they have been manufactured at different times in different workshops. Common characteristics of roof-tiles united by us in particular types and forms, resemble each other. In our opinion a major part of the studied materials should have been manufactured locally. Based on the processing of archaeological materials the conclusions on dating of particular types of CBM were drawn.

The article is dedicated to the UNESCO World Heritage Program, in particular, the issues of preservation and protection of historic urban landscapes. The article discusses how the UNESCO World Heritage Program seeks to fulfill its mission of preserving the World Cultural Heritage, which is of particular universal importance to humanity, both for present and future generations. We understand well that cities differ in their culture and historical development. Uncontrolled urbanization threatens the heritage and often raises the issue of its deterioration and destruction, which raises the fear of losing the identity in the society, the important “places” for them, the local cultural monuments. These issues are well reflected in the UN and UNESCO documents. In the conditions of globalization, cities are so similar in financial, technological, informational and other characteristics that they lose their different appearance and become like analogues. Therefore only culture and heritage is the only resource that always separates peoples, cities and differentiates from each other. Powerful cities creatively incubate, creating a stimulating and engaging environment in a variety of cultural fields to showcase the unique features of their local culture that increase international visibility in a global context. The values of the society and the ways of their expression are reflected in the culture. Cultural resources are a distinguishing feature of our cities. Therefore, these UN recommendations were developed in 2011 to better implement urban management programs. Such are the HUL approaches for all UNESCO member countries that voluntarily agree to take action that does not necessarily seek to change existing doctrines or approaches to conservation, but is an additional tool of cultural policy proposed by UNESCO, in which the overall objectives of urban development can be seen, however, clearly shows the value of cultural variety, which distinguishes them. The article provides 7 guidelines that describe the need for and application of HUL approaches in different countries, showing examples of their experiences. The article provides a comparative analysis of current processes in Georgia, as well as the need to use HUL approaches.

კროს-კულტურული კოდური გადართვა, როგორც უსაფრთხოების სტრატეგია

Author(s): Liana Melikishvili,Natia Jalabadze / Language(s): Georgian Issue: 1/2021

The article deals with the issue of cross-cultural code-switching in the context of ethnic culture. This process can be interpreted as a purposeful switching of a representative of one culture to any culturally established traditions, norms of behavior of another culture, in order to adapt various cultural norms for the corresponding behavior. The coexistence of two different cultures would be impossible without this phenomenon. In multi-ethnic Georgia, acculturation processes have been going on for centuries in the direction of integration, which means the preservation of cultural identity by the ethnic group on the one hand and involvement in a foreign culture, on the other. The principle of switching cultural codes plays an important role in these processes, which leads to the development of a security strategy. In a multicultural society, the switching of ethnic codes can be observed both at the individual and group levels. Mainly at the initiative of ethnic minorities, code-switching is frequent in the social and religious spheres (baptism, a joint religious celebration of Christians and Muslims). The important role of code-switching in the process of integration In the multicultural regions of Georgia is obvious: interpersonal and intergroup contacts and the number of mixed marriages are increasing, cases of intergroup clashes and conflicts are decreasing, different ethnic groups participate in each other’s religious rites, the number of joint events is increasing.

In Innsbruck, Austria, is preserved a unique Medieval art artefact, an enamel-decorated plate. Its height - five Centimeters, Diameter - twenty-five Centimeters. Dark Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, Turquoise, Black and White Colors are used in his images. In the middle of the plate, a circle depicts a famous story, The Rise of Alexander the Great - the young man holds crossed sticks in his hands, surrounded by two birds. Around the circle containing image of Alexander, there are six other circles below the plate and six on the lower side and images of Peacocks, lions, as well as a wide variety of compositions: Snakes with Eagle claws, Winged Horses, Wrestlers, Dancers and Acrobats, Flute players, Birds and Trees of life. Inscription shows, that this plate received as a gift one of the Artuqid rulers - Amir Daud (1114-1142), the owner of Hisn Kaifa. According to some researchers, this product belongs to the Georgian school of enamel. Many images of plate are repeated on various monuments of Georgian art of this era. We have shown several cases, when various stories and plant motifs reflected on the plate, are repeated in the Georgian ecclesiastical art. In the Middle Ages, enamel products had a very high price, which is why this product was considered a suitable royal gift in Georgia. Georgian chronicles pay great attention to the royal gift and attach special importance to the ability to choose a worthy gift among the qualities necessary for the king. The Innsbruck plate also belongs to this tradition, as a magnificent monument of Medieval art, where many images from this era can be found, which, unlike ecclesiastical art, are not limited.

The Development of National Cinema in Post-Maidan Ukraine

Author(s): Elżbieta Olzacka / Language(s): English Issue: 02/2023

Since the Euromaidan revolution, Ukrainian cinema has been experiencing a renaissance, associated with both the wave of civic and creative activity and the policy of the post-Maidan authorities supporting the film industry. The article analyzes the development of Ukrainian cinema from 2014 to 2019, focusing not only on organizational, institutional, and legal changes but also on the accompanying controversies. It addresses the main socio-political, economic, and cultural factors influencing progress in the number of films produced in Ukraine and their popularization on the domestic and foreign market. The article particularly emphasizes the context of Russian aggression toward Ukraine and the ongoing war in Donbas, as it influences not only the topics taken up by filmmakers but also the priorities of authorities in the field of cultural policy. Cinema has become one of the fronts of the conflict. Thus, the post-Maidan authorities’ concern was both to block Russian content deemed dangerous from the point of view of national security and to produce and promote “Ukrainian-centric” narratives. The last part of the article will discuss the new Ukrainian “patriotic cinema,” supported and subsidized by the state, with a focus on the role it plays in a society experiencing conflict.

Пропаганда и обществено мнение: Липман, Дюи и Бернайс, четени днес

Author(s): Georgi Medarov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 1/2023

Public fears of post-truth, hybrid warfare and foreign propaganda are gaining prominence. The purpose of this article is to show such concerns are hardly novel. I will make analogies between the contemporary debate and the problematization of public opinion and propaganda in the United States in the 1920s, juxtaposing the works of Edward Bernays, Walter Lippmann and John Dewey. I examine the incommensurabilities and overlaps in their understandings to extract three types of perspectives towards propaganda: liberal, neoliberal and democratic. Furthermore, I am interested in how to theoretically make sense of the internal contradictions and paradoxes in anti-propaganda attitudes and discourses.
