In today’s society, increased interconnectivity has transformed the notion of success in communication and has brought intercultural competence to a level unseen before. One of the core ingredients of successful collaborative communication in teaching, learning and other forms of interaction is empathy. This article attempts a review of theoretical research about the connection between empathy and education. It proposes a reflection on the role of empathy in communication in general, and in language teaching and learning in particular, drawing on the views of notable researchers in the fields of second language acquisition, educational psychology, and sociology. The contribution of empathy to enhanced networking abilities, to positive classroom atmosphere, to increased intercultural awareness, and to higher efficiency of the educational process are some of the ideas exposed in our study.

The Word Leading to Agreement

The Word Leading to Agreement

Author(s): Małgorzata Kowalczyk-Marcjan,Petr Poslední / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2020

The concept of the language as an instrument for children, that leads to their mutual understand- ing in the classes 1–3, depends on the comprehensive educators approach to the relations between linguistics and the philosophy of language, developmental psychology, sociology of culture, and the history of the Polish society. The child’s undertaking of the school education imposes on the teacher the obligation to accompany it not only in mastering the elementary knowledge of the native language’s grammar system, but also in creating situations that overcome students fear of making difficult decisions when solving interesting tasks. When using the functions of the language: fatic, communicative, informational, expressive or meta-linguistic, pupils go through the several stages from the incorrect speech to correct speech, and they master the elementary structure of the reading texts intended for the little recipients. The described process would be strengthened depending on the pupil’s social background, and conditioned culturally and environmentally. This in turn affects the perception of the poetic language function and aesthetic attitude towards art.

Държавна политика за качествено образование чрез установяването на основанието за уволнение на педагогически специалист при осъждане за престъпление

Author(s): Hristo Banov / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 3/2023

The purpose of the study is to analyze the issues related to the ways of implementing state policy in the field of education, aimed at ensuring and guaranteeing quality and efficient preschool and school education. Emphasis is placed on an extremely important prerequisite for providing education with the specified characteristics in schools and kindergartens, which is a serious goal for every state administration, namely the high personal (including moral) qualities of pedagogical specialists – the subjects who are directly involved in the process of providing the relevant education. More specifically, it concerns the grounds established in the legislation for the dismissal of a pedagogical specialist in cases of their conviction for a crime. A comparison, respectively differentiation, is drawn between this legal solution and the requirement, which is identical to it as a linguistic expression, for occupying the position of a pedagogical specialist. In addition to an in-depth analysis of the indicated grounds for dismissal, a comparison, respectively differentiation, between it and the requirement for occupying the position of a pedagogical specialist, which is identical as a linguistic expression, is made, as a result of which certain conclusions have been formulated for the first time in the doctrine.

CONTRIBUTION OF THE CLERGY TO ORGANISING THE ROMANIAN EDUCATION IN THE SOUTH OF THE DANUBE

CONTRIBUTION OF THE CLERGY TO ORGANISING THE ROMANIAN EDUCATION IN THE SOUTH OF THE DANUBE

Author(s): Claudiu Cotan / Language(s): Romanian Issue: 20/2020

Besides serving within their parishes, the Orthodox, Catholic, Protestant, as well as Muslim clergy got involved in creating and coordinating the schools in the Ottoman Empire, which functioned most times close to the holy places of worship. The promotion of the rights of the communities in minority in the 19th century brought about the emancipation of the education. Little by little the religious rights came to be observed by the Ottoman administration and by the Ecumenical Patriarchate which had to cede to the pressure of the Orthodox peoples of the Balkans. Thus, the education in the language of the communities in minorities have become a reality, even if the new states formed in the Southern Danubian space after the fall of the Ottoman Empire manifested obvious reticence to observe the social and cultural rights of these minorities. The Romanians of the Balkans have also come up such hardships. The Romanian population in majority in Dobrudgea had to fight intensive fight for defending their rights during the Ottoman domination. I shall present in this study the role of the clergy in organising the Romanian education in the Balkans and in Dobrudgea.

Социально-психологическая адаптация студентов – представителей коренных малочисленных народов Севера, Сибири и Дальнего Востока к колледжу в новой социокультурной среде: теоретическая модель

Author(s): Anastasiya Vladimirovna Miklyaeva,Julia S. Pezhemskaya,Valeriya V. Khoroshih,Irina A. Baeva / Language(s): Russian Issue: 6/2022

Introduction. The study examines the psychological, academic, social and cultural adaptation of indigenous students to a vocational school environment with a focus on representatives of indigenous peoples from the North, Siberia and the Far East. The purpose of the research is to model the processes of students’ socio-psychological adaptation to vocational college in a new socio-cultural environment. Materials and Methods. The systematic scholarly literature review was conducted in 2022 using the following search engines and electronic bibliographic databases: Google Scholar, Scopus, RSCI, and ERIC. The analysis included Russian and English language articles published between 2000 and 2022 reporting the results of the original empirical research on the problem of student adjustment to college in a changing socio-cultural environment. Of the 975 articles selected for systematic analysis, 68 sources met the search criteria. Results. A systematic literature review enabled us to identify two groups of social psychological resources for student adaptation to college in the new sociocultural environment: individual resources (individual psychological and academic) and environmental resources (including educational environment within the college and system of interpersonal relations). Based on the results of the systematic review, a theoretical model of the socio-psychological adjustment of the students (representatives of indigenous minorities of the North, Siberia and the Far East) to the vocational education institution in the new socio-cultural environment, which describes the procedural and structural elements of the adjustment process, as well as the interplay of personal, meso- and macro-environmental adaptation resources is proposed. Conclusions. The theoretical adaptation model of Students from Indigenous Minorities of the North, Siberia students, created on the basis of a systematic analysis of the literature, makes it possible to develop on its basis the technology for assessing the adaptation resources of the students of the CIS and DV and the measures of psychological, educational and social support for students belonging to the risk group, to the development of programs to prevent academic mismatch and student dropout. The prospects of the study include empirical verification of the proposed model.

Взаимосвязь между личностными характеристиками и степенью цифровой зависимости у студентов педагогического вуза

Author(s): Marina V. Zhukova,Ksenia I. Shishkina,Angelina N. Lomakina,Elena V. Frolova,Evgeniya Yuryevna Volchegorskaya / Language(s): Russian Issue: 3/2023

Introduction. The article deals with the problem of identifying predictors of the formation of digital addiction in future teachers. The purpose of the article is to examine the factors underlying the formation of Internet addiction, as well as to substantiate and identify the relationship between personality traits and the degree of digital dependence among students of a pedagogical university. Materials and Methods. The study is based on the scientific works by leading experts representing various aspects of digital addiction (S. Chen, S. D. Neverkovich, K. Kawabe, O. Zahiruddin, A. K. Gudboy, etc.). The ‘Internet Addiction Scale’ developed by S. Chen was used in order to identify signs of addictive behavior in the Internet space: the desire to be constantly online, a state of frustration when unable to use the Internet, an increase in the amount of time spent online, physiological signs of deterioration of health after a long time on the Internet, difficulties with time management. In order to study the ‘light’ personal characteristics, the ‘Light Triad Scale’ by S. B. Kaufman was used, which allowed to identify positive personality qualities including Kantianism, humanism and faith in humanity. The ‘Short Questionnaire of the Dark Triad’ by D. Polhus and K. Williams was used as a diagnostic tool for studying ‘dark’ personality characteristics (narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy). The study involved 47 undergraduates majoring in Education aged between 19 and 20 years. Results. The results of the study showed that the majority of students demonstrated the symptoms of pronounced Internet addiction and a tendency to excessive use of digital devices. According to the results of the empirical study, the authors revealed a correlation between the high level of digital addiction and some parameters of personal characteristics (manipulation of people, cynicism, deceitfulness, a reduced level of empathy, low social anxiety, a tendency to impulsive behavior). At the same time, a low level of digital addiction correlates to a pronounced respectful attitude towards people as individuals. Conclusions. The article concludes that the formation of Internet addiction among Education students is determined by peculiarities of virtual space and emotional and communicative factors. The study revealed a statistically significant relationship between the indicators of digital dependence and some parameters of personality traits.

Prospects of preparing future teachers for intercultural interaction in the accelerated learning conditions

Prospects of preparing future teachers for intercultural interaction in the accelerated learning conditions

Author(s): Tatiana A. Zhukova,Vladimir I. Bogoslovskiy,Irina Vyacheslavovna Gladkaya,Ekaterina Yu Andreeva,Аlexander N. Dzhurinskiy / Language(s): English Issue: 3/2023

Introduction. This article focuses on development prospects of preparing future teachers for intercultural interaction in conditions of accelerated learning. The aim of the study is to identify the core development prospects for preparing future teachers for intercultural interaction in conditions of accelerated learning. Materials and Methods. The study followed a systematic approach, the implementation of which made it possible to comprehensively consider a specific precedent, identify its components, and determine the significance of each component that ensures the integrity of the precedent under consideration. The authors used analysis of scholarly literature and research results as the main research method. Results. The theoretical analysis of the scholarly literature allowed the authors to arrive at the following research results. Firstly, the authors substantiated the role of two research methods that are supposed to form the basis of comparative analysis (the method of precedents and the method of expert assessments). Secondly, the authors established conceptual foundations for designing a model of accelerated learning in the process of teacher preparation, based on the equal status of cultures, which is based on the dialogue of cultures. The authors emphasize the importance of studying emerging practices in each region, considered as possible precedents. So, as an example, the experience of the Pedagogical Institute in Ludwigsburg, which has developed practices for preparing teachers for intercultural interaction, is proposed (examples of disciplines, types of teaching internships that are actively used in the process of teacher education are provided). Conclusions. The authors have proposed and clarified the prospects for the development of teachers’ preparation for intercultural interaction in the context of accelerated learning. They include the implementation of new methods and designing a model of accelerated learning within the process of teacher education. The results obtained can become the basis for further study of the problem of preparing highly qualified educators in the conditions of accelerated learning. Materials and results of this research can be used to develop programs aimed at preparing future teachers for intercultural interaction in multicultural regions.

(How) Can Machine Learning Support Teaching Staff in a Virtual Collaborative Learning Environment?

Author(s): Arne Böhmer,Hannes Schubert,Maximilian Musch,Sebastian Schmidt / Language(s): English Issue: 1/2023

Purpose: Supervising roles within virtual collaborative learning (VCL) environments face many different challenges and are often having difficulties keeping an eye on everything and comprehending every participant’s or group’s workflow. To help supervisors with problems like that we developed a software prototype to support their daily workflow and overcome the mentioned challenges. Study design/methodology/approach: This study used a design science research approach to investigate how learning analytics might be able to support teaching staff in VCL settings. Previous studies demonstrated that this approach is very well suited to derive design guidelines for such software artifacts. Initially, a qualitative interview series with four experienced tutors was carried out to get an in-depth understanding of the challenges and tasks teaching staff typically faces in VCL environments. The interview material was systematically analysed to acquire the underlying software requirements. These were then combined with existing knowledge about support software of similar use cases to create a first prototype, primarily based on a supervised machine learning model that classifies online messages sent within the teams. Findings: The software tool we have developed has shown that machine learning processes can indeed be used to support teaching staff in VCL environments. The tool achieves satisfactory classification performance in categorizing chat messages. It could therefore be demonstrated that it is possible to classify chat messages using a software tool. The interviews conducted revealed a particular interest in the statistical evaluations of group activities in Microsoft Teams. This was said to save a lot of time in the subsequent evaluation of the groups. The interviewed eTutors also expressed an interest in receiving private information on the development of possible conflicts within groups. The interest of the interviewed supervisors was very high and additional interviews could lead to further possible feature ideas. In general, the evaluative interviews resulted in positive feedback regarding how our prototype supported eTutors during their work. Originality/value: In current times, spatially distributed and asynchronous education plays a bigger role than ever before. VCL environments are useful tools to overcome these challenges of time and space. However, unlike research on conversational agents or automated feedback systems, the focus of this work is not on the communication interface between software and users or the exclusively quantitative analysis of messages. The goal is to evaluate the content of sent messages within VCL environments using the six defined categories to gain a better qualitative understanding of the teams’ collaboration and its workflow.

DIPLOMA-PASSPORT FOR LIFE

Author(s): Marin Manolescu / Language(s): English Issue: 23/2020

Our study entitled "Diploma-passport for life" starts from the assumption that the public opinion in Romania gives great credit to the idea that in life you are "something" or "someone" according to the school and university degrees you hold. We aim to investigate students' and teachers' perceptions of the significance of the diploma, opinions, social and mental representations on the value of these documents, trust in the meritocratic ideas that the diploma attesting school and university merits is a predictor of success in life, represents our professional and social elevator, the guarantee of social success. Consequently, we will investigate opinions and attitudes about the value of the diploma in terms of access to the best possible social position, we will express points of view extracted from the domains literature and also from the analysis of relevant stakeholders opinions’ in regards to the value of the "diploma" in ensuring success in life. We will also draw attention to some skewedness, to some deviations materialized in the mentalities and practices of some institutions and people found in the university environment in the last decades in relation to obtaining the "diploma". It is about the mentality that the diploma can be obtained without merit, without effort, including plagiarism, fraud in various forms, by vitiating the results of contests and / or exams, by relaxing the methodologies of conducting high-valued evaluations, etc.

The Concept of Parental Praise in Parenting

Author(s): Gülçin Karadeniz / Language(s): English Issue: 4/2023

Praise is stated as a good performance resource that can increase the individual's sense of competence and motivate their new learning. When the literature is examined, the importance of communication with the child in parenting is emphasized, especially the power of the words used by the parents. Parental praise is expressed as parents' repetition of the desired behaviors in children and giving feedback that will make them feel warm and sensitive with their words and behaviors in order to indicate the satisfaction felt towards them. Studies emphasize that parental praise is an important method in child development and a method that parents use very often. It is reported that many parents prefer to use praise as a tool to build self-confidence in their child. In terms of positive discipline, it is assumed that praise creates a reward value as a result of operant conditioning and can affect behavioral acquisition in the child's development. The type of parental praise plays an important role in how children form their self-image. It is in these early relationships that children first begin to feel capable, competent, and loved. Although praise is expressed as a source of motivation when it cannot be used beneficially, it can become harmful to the child when used incorrectly or excessively. At this point, the content of the praise is important. In this study, the concept of parental praise is discussed, the content of praise, which is seen as a reference to motivation, is examined and its benefits for child development are tried to be explained.

ПРОЯВЛЕНИЙ СВІТ ФЕДОРА НЕДОШОВЕНКА – ХУДОЖНИКА І ПЕДАГОГА

Author(s): Tamara Fedorivna Nedoshovenko / Language(s): Ukrainian Issue: 1/2023

The purpose of the study is to examine and analyse the creative heritage of Fedir Nedoshovenko, the painter and teacher, whose works represent the Kyiv school of Ukrainian painting of the second half of the 20th century. The artist’s activity, his artistic practice – both in painting, teaching – is inextricably linked with a deep understanding of the laws of fine art in the context of the European artistic culture. The methodology of the article is formed by a set of methods such as art history and structural axiological methods. The methods of empirical research of works of art are used: observation, comparison, and experiment. Abstraction, analysis and synthesis are applied at the empirical and theoretical levels of research. Historical method and systematic approach are used as methods of theoretical generalisation. Scientific novelty consists in understanding the artist’s creativity, his artistic and pedagogical activity, which is determined by the principles of artistic genres. For the first time, achievements in the genre of portrait, still life, easel painting, specific features, means and methods of artistic expression of each genre in the artist's work are analysed. Conclusions. The activity of Fedir Nedoshovenko was in the pre-war and post-war period within the boundaries of the Kyiv State Art Institute, on the territory of which the artist lived with his family and taught. The content of the artist's work in a broad sense was a man, diverse nature, human life. The practice of the history of world art confirms that the true reflection of reality, announced by realistic aesthetics, is an important objective law of realistic art, which the artist taught and studied.
