Ерос е изкусен ловец или още веднъж за неписаните учения и Платоновата философска система

Author(s): Tsocho Boyadzhiev / Language(s): Bulgarian Issue: 11/2021

The text begins with the statement that the dispute over Plato’s so-called “Unwritten doctrines” (agrapha dogmata), that ruled the minds and determined the fashion in Platonic studies during the second half of the last century, gradually lost its vehemence. The followers of H.-J. Krämer and K. Geiser on the one hand and H. Cherniss and G. Vlastos on the other seem to be satisfied with the results of the discussions and have agreed to a reasonable compromise, acceptable to both sides. The points of “reconciliation” rest on the following agreements: Plato was not only the author of the dialogues but also the tutor in the Academy. These two roles required different strategies of communication based on the advantages and disadvantages of verbal and written discourse. “Plato’s esoteric philosophy” does not mean some secret doctrine but is used in its literal meaning as inner-school teachings. The Platonic philosophy taught to selected students in the Academy was not different from the one in the dialogues but was taught differently by explicit arguments that are otherwise concealed in the written works or revealed through analogies and allegories. The propensities towards dogmatization of one or another model of the universe are neutralized by the dialogical form and by dialogicity as an existential mode of human being. Therefore, the complete interpretation of Plato's views should be based on both direct and indirect sources where the contents of the dialogues should serve as a corrective against possible over-interpretations, and the evidence about the verbal teaching ensures the completion of the great Athenian's intellectual construction. The text also has another minor goal – to respond to the systematic and prolonged attacks, especially on the Internet platforms against the “Tubingen thesis” whose advocate in Bulgaria is the author.

Pasolini: faszyzm – konsumpcjonizm – katolicyzm. I poszukiwanie życia

Pasolini: faszyzm – konsumpcjonizm – katolicyzm. I poszukiwanie życia

Author(s): Georg Seeßlen / Language(s): Polish Issue: 10/2021

When it comes to writing about Pier Paolo Pasolini’s oeuvre, nobody can approach it without a subjective and political position. The author of this text takes as his point of departure the presence of the poet and filmmaker in his host country Italy, where the name Pasolini means much more than merely the name of an author. Pasolini stands for the rebellious spirit at a time when the Italian economic miracle was coming to an end, during which a great “contaminazione” (Pasolini), a mutual “infectiousness” took place between the vulgar and the sublime, the culture of the poor suburbs and the discourses of the intellectuals, between old myths and new seductions. In this situation, Pasolini’s texts and films are searching for a way to counter the horror of a new fascism in the form of the petit bourgeois “consumistic” rule with a “force of the past”. Points of reference for this are a radical Catholicism and communism, the latter moving via a Marxist analysis of society to an archaic Ur-communism. Pasolini always saw himself as a stranger. Almost all of his films (leaving aside the vital “Trilogy of Life”, from which he distanced himself in his last and most radical film “Salò”) are attempts to look into the strangeness of the familiar and the familiarity of the strange. In doing so, the author and filmmaker never spared himself; his films are a magic autobiography. To put it another way, Pasolini’s biography makes his films “readable” and his films make the inner history of Italy (and to a certain extent that of Europe as a whole) in the sixties and seventies “readable”, just as in his films bodies make “readable” ideas and ideas make “readable” bodies. Texts on Pier Paolo Pasolini can be markings for these processes of reading. However, they can never be a substitute for following one’s own way which leads back and forth between both the physicality (the reality of the streets, “contaminated” by art history) and the world of ideas (the myth and religion, “contaminated” with Marxism and psychoanalysis).

Kolegiata w Myszyńcu w świetle nowych ustaleń i atrybucji

Kolegiata w Myszyńcu w świetle nowych ustaleń i atrybucji

Author(s): Tomasz Grygiel / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2021

The largest church of the Kurpie Region: the Collegiate Church of the Holy Trinity in Myszyniec, was initially considered a work of Adolf Schimmelpfennig. However, on the grounds of archival sources it has been ascertained that it was Franciszek Przecławski who was its designer, and that the Church was raised in 1909-1922. Analysing the reasons for Schimmelpfennig's name having been associated with the Myszyniec Collegiate Church, the forms of its free-standing belfry, socalled gate tower, are analysed; the Author concludes that it is Schimmelpfennig who was responsible for the remodelling of the belfry in 1867-1868.

Monaster Świętej Trójcy w Markowie pod Witebskiem

Author(s): Marta Boberska,Wojciech Boberski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 4/2021

A monograph study on the Orthodox Monastery of the Holy Trinity at Markowo near Witebsk (Vitebsk) is presented. It shows the Monastery's history as seen against religious conflicts between the followers of the Orthodox and Uniate Churches in the 17th cand 18th centuries, the conflicts particularly vivid in Witebsk where the memory of the assassination of Archbishop Jozafat Kuncewicz (1623) made the restitution of the Orthodox Church a sensitive issue. The Ogiñski family were the founders and benefactors of the Markowo Monastery in the 17th century. In harmony with the Eastern monastic tradition, the complex of buildings grouped around a courtyard created an almost self-sufficient separate town. It was composed of the following: two Orthodox churches: the wooden one of the Holy Trinity (after 1685-1690), richly furnished, and the brick one of the Intercession of the Theotokos (1754-1755), together with monastery buildings. Additionally, two wooden Orthodox churches belonged to the Monastery: the cemetery one of St Nicholas and of St Praxedes (both ca 1730).

Czternastowieczny fresk z motywem Matki Bożej współdźwigającej krzyż w architektonicznej przestrzeni dwunawowej fary w Bolkowie

Author(s): Aleksander Jankowski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2021

The Gothic murals and medieval architectural details recently discovered in St Hedwig's Church in Bolków have shed new light on the early history of the church's architecture. They proved the church was transformated in the 3th quarter of the 14th century into a two-aisle hall, and not as it was supposed into a three-aisle layoud. Among remains of Gothic murals dating to three or four historical phases, survived the representation of the Our Lady Jointly Carrying the Cross with Jesus. This is the oldest in Polish pictoral interpretation of the compassio Mariae idea. The painting dating from ca 1360, displays clear iconographic affiliation with the scene On the Way to Golgotha of the Passion cycle from ca 1350 in St Leonard's Chapel in Landschlacht (Altnau) on Lake Constance.

Ostatnia pierwszą, czyli o ambonie łodziowej z kościoła pw. św. św. Piotra i Pawła na Antokolu w Wilnie

The ship pulpit from the Church of SS Peter and Paul in Antakalnis in Vilnius is considered in literature a woodcarving project executed in 1803 by Giovanni Boretti and Niccolo Piano said to have been brought from Milan to renovate and refurbish the church. Actually, they were simple masons who came to Vilnius already in the late 18th century; Piano died in 1802. Meanwhile, the formal features of the pulpit show that it was executed in the 1720s, most likely after the design of Pietro Perti who co-created the exquisite stucco décor of the Antakalnis church. This happened shortly following his death in 1714, while the initiator of the works was the Antakalnis Provost Piotr Procewicz, doctor of philosophy and an appraised preacher who in 1737 became the Provost of the congregation of Corpus Christi. He commissioned a ship pulpit modelled on that raised in Vilnius for the church of the Canons Regular of the Lateran in Kazimierz in 1740-1745.

Architekt Abraham Würtzner (?). Przyczynek do dziejów wileńskiego baroku

Architekt Abraham Würtzner (?). Przyczynek do dziejów wileńskiego baroku

Author(s): Wojciech Boberski / Language(s): Polish Issue: 3/2021

An attempt at describing the profile of the architect Abraham, most likely bearing the family name of Würtzner (before 1700-1758) is undertaken. Archival sources confirm that he came from the «Imperial Countries». Highly likely father of the son Ignacy, also an architect, he was additionally a relative of Johann, a goldsmith, who came to Vilnius from Lidzbark Warmiñski. Furthermore, the sources confirm the participation of the architect Abraham in the creation of the majority of works promoting the ideas of Borromini and Guarini, lately attributed to Glaubitz or to an «anonymous Italian architect». Abraham thus authored unusual Carmelite edifices in Vilnius and Głêbokie, he raised the towers of the £ukiszki Dominican Church, and the genuine church of the Piarist College at £u¿ki near Głêbokie (1742). Furthermore, he raised some edifices in Minsk and Nowogródek. Despite any direct references lacking with respect to definite projects, Abraham’s distinctive style allows to attribute to him a number of buildings both within Vilnius itself (façades of the Churches of the Visitation Nuns, the Franciscans, and of the Augustines), in Minsk (façades of the Dominican and Bernardine Churches, the tower in front of the Jesuit College), and in Nowogródek (Orthodox Church at the Castle?), as well as in the provinces, e.g., the Iwieniec Parish Church or the Zdziêcioł Palace of the Radziwiłłs (1729-1731?).

Portal główny kościoła św. Jakuba w Sandomierzu. Zawiązek interpretacji treści dzieła

Portal główny kościoła św. Jakuba w Sandomierzu. Zawiązek interpretacji treści dzieła

Author(s): Tadeusz Jurkowlaniec / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2021

The main portal of the Dominican Church of St James in Sandomierz (after 1226 - before 1253?) was bricked with a specially designed brick (shallow portico, ca 12-cm-thick) and regular ones (tympanum, ca 8-cm-thick) with the use of several stone blocks. The types of the portal supports, motifs of their decoration, and numbers involved show that the workís composition was based on the principles of Christian time measuring (19-year moon cycle and 28-year solar cycles). The conversion of the cyclical time calculation to the linear one enables to decipher the period 1167-1233 in the portal. If seen within that time limit, the decoration motifs allow to initially identify e.g., Duke Leszek the White (d. 1227) and his wife Grzymisława (d. 1258), as well as Bishop Iwo Odrowπż (d. 1229).

Północna wieża kościoła Mariackiego w Krakowie w perspektywie ulicy Floriańskiej. Przyczynek do badań nad planowaniem osi widokowych w średniowieczu

Author(s): Piotr Pajor / Language(s): Polish Issue: 2/2021

Considerations around the urban status of the westwork of St Maryís Church are presented. The Church is placed diagonally to the Market Square, while its western tower protrudes in front of the street frontage in the way optically blocking the view on the axis of Floriaòska Street. The church's towers were raised at the turn of the 14th century in the course of intense development and transformation of the city. It seems likely that such a location of a parish church was intentional and meant to maximally expose a building important for the city's commune.

Refleks dzieł Dientzenhoferów na pograniczu Wielkopolski. Architektura kościoła pw. św. Marii Magdaleny w Zamysłowie

Author(s): Aleksander Stankiewicz / Language(s): Polish Issue: 1/2021

Despite its high artistic quality, the architecture of the Parish Church of St Mary Magdalene at Zamysłów (Hinzendorf) has not as yet been separately studied. The foundation of the building was initiated by Fr Philip Valentin Hoffman, and it was financed by the Poor Clares of the Głogów Convent with construction works having been completed by 1752. The conducted formal analysis allows to identify the resemblance of the church's layout to that of the Benedictine Church at Legnickie Pole (1727-1731) designed by Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer.

Zespół obrazów w dawnym dominikańskim sanktuarium św. Zofii w Zofiborze

Zespół obrazów w dawnym dominikańskim sanktuarium św. Zofii w Zofiborze

Author(s): Irena Rolska / Language(s): Polish Issue: 57/2021

In 1710 Jan Domaszewski, in his village Domaszewice, founded a wooden church. In the years 1721–1722, Franciszek and Zofia Nowosielski erected and endowed a wooden monastery for the Dominicans. Since then, the part of the village belonging to the Dominicans, has been called Zofibór. Even if the friars are no longer present in that property, one can find their remembrance in the Baroque images of St. Dominik and Vincent Ferrer, the painting of the Virgin Mary in the type of Eleusa made by Stanisław Szczerbic (1628) and a the painting of the patron saint of the sanctuary St. Sophia.

Przyczynek do dziejów działalności kapeli bernardyńskiej w Budsławiu

Przyczynek do dziejów działalności kapeli bernardyńskiej w Budsławiu

Author(s): Andrzej Edward Godek / Language(s): Polish Issue: 58/2021

The musical culture of the Bernardine Order is still quite a new issue in Polish musicology. In the 18th and 19th centuries, in most of their convents bernardines performed a monophonic repertoire, and sometimes also polyphony consisting of parallel thirds and sixths (canto fratto repertoire). Against this background, the musical life of the convent in Budsław (currently in the territory of Belarus) attracts our attention. In this convent, in 1756 Barbara Skorulska founded a musical chapel that was organised as a school of music. A number of students of this institution changed, fluctuating between 12 and 20, all of them coming from poor noble families from nearby area. The history of the chapel, analysed in the following article, is a unique example of such a musical organisation in bernardine convents so far.

Posługa muzyka kościelnego w świetle Musikalisch-liturgisches Wörterbuch Bernharda Kothego (1821–1897)

Posługa muzyka kościelnego w świetle Musikalisch-liturgisches Wörterbuch Bernharda Kothego (1821–1897)

Author(s): Karolina Pawlik / Language(s): Polish Issue: 58/2021

In the tradition of the Catholic Church, music is an indispensable and integral part of its solemn liturgy. This statement is a reminder of a centuries-old belief in the unity of these two realities. Over the centuries, various causes have resulted in periods of better or worse condition of liturgical music. The second half of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century were considered a time of crisis. It manifested itself primarily in the low level of education and carelessness of church musicians, as well as the lack of appropriate musical literature and drawing on secular models. In response to these phenomena, the Allgemeiner Cäcilienverein society was founded in 1868. This movement brought together clergy and laity concerned about the state of contemporary church music. Particular emphasis was placed on education. For this purpose, collections of music literature, textbooks and magazines began to be developed. One of such items is Bernhard Kothe’s Musikalisch-liturgisches Wörterbuch dictionary published in 1890. It is an organized collection of information presented in the form of basic entries with their descriptions, which gives it the form of a lexicon. It contains not only general music and liturgical knowledge, but also the author’s thoughts on the ministry of a church musician.

Krucyfiks Cristo vivo w kościele pw. św. Michała Archanioła w Urazie. Wirtuozerskie przedstawienie Chrystusa Ukrzyżowanego Lwowskiej Szkoły Rzeźbiarskiej Doby Rokoka

Author(s): Maria Feliks / Language(s): Polish Issue: 58/2021

This paper deals with the question of the “Cristo vivo” crucifix type, a relatively rarely realized motif of the Crucified Christ with his head raised upwards, on the example of a sculpture from the church of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Navaria, currently located in St. Michael’s the Archangel church in Uraz near Brzeg Dolny. This crucifix, together with a part of the furnishings of the Navarian temple, was transported in 1945 by the Polish people leaving the Eastern Borderlands to Lower Silesia. The aim of the article is to outline the possible sources of inspiration for this performance, as well as its influence on the faithful as an element of the Baroque theatrum sacrum.

KANCELARIA PARAFIALNA W ZABORZE AUSTRIACKIM I JEJ DOKUMENTACJA NA PRZEŁOMIE XIX I XX WIEKU

Author(s): Grzegorz Bujak / Language(s): Polish Issue: 116/2021

The Catholic Church fulfilled important tasks in the administrative structure of the Habsburg monarchy. They were carried out basing on the parish network as well as state and church regulations. For their fulfilment, an efficient parish office was necessary, which, using appropriate forms, registered various information about the pastoral activity and life of the congregation. The article presents the principles of the organization of offices, registry and archives in Catholic parishes of the Austrian partition at the peak of their development at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The goals and methods of keeping vital records books and other forms of parish documentation as well as the rules of official correspondence were discussed. The basis for the study was the manual for running a parish office for the clergy, written by Rev. Alojzy Jougan, a professor at the University of Lviv in 1912, in which the formal, legal and practical-pastoral principles of running a parish office were discussed.

OFIARNOŚĆ DUCHOWIEŃSTWA I SKŁADKI KOŚCIELNE (PARAFIALNE) NA RZECZ ZWIĄZKU CARITAS DIECEZJI TARNOWSKIEJ W LATACH 1939-1945

Author(s): Jerzy Gapys / Language(s): Polish Issue: 116/2021

After the initial destabilization of the Church’s charitable actions in the Tarnów diocese (subsidies from the curia, personal donations by priests and the faithful from the parish) to Caritas (mainly its headquarters), a marked increase in donations to Caritas in Tarnów were observed from 1942. The action of parochial donations (cash, in-kind contributions) for the Caritas headquarters was the largest one. During the years 1942-1944, cash and in-kind contributions were donated by approx. 30 parishes (approx. 30%), which were located in 15 deaneries (52%). In total, PLN 351,445 was donated, mainly from the parishes in the central and western zones of the Tarnów diocese. The generosity of the clergy from their personal income (iura stolae) culminated in 1944, when over 480 priests (compared to 88 in 1940) transferred over PLN 320,000 to Caritas. Financial and material support, as well as donations from the faithful to parochial Caritas branches, did not acquire a universal character, with just isolated cases being recorded in the Tarnów diocese. Locally, however, these funds were the basis of the Caritas’ branches’ budgets, sometimes even accounting for ¾ of their income. The subsidies from the Tarnów curia, thanks to the financial policy of Bishop Komar, constituted the most important item in the Caritas budget. By 1944, the curia had donated PLN 2,472,000. It was almost 60% of the total income of the Association, and more than 78% of all donations from the Church to the Association.

ŹRÓDŁA DO BADAŃ NAD KASATAMI JÓZEFIŃSKIMI W GALICJI (1782-1848) W ARCHIWACH WIEDEŃSKICH

Author(s): Gregor Ploch / Language(s): Polish Issue: 116/2021

As part of an international, historical research project entitled Cultural heritage of dissolved monasteries in the territories of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and in Silesia in the 18th and 19th centuries: fate, significance, inventory carried out in 2012-2016 under the supervision of Prof. Marek Derwich, I conducted a series of queries in the Viennese archives in order to identify and comprehensively study the archives related to the dissolution of monasteries and collegiate churches in Galicia. The main focus of the research was the extensive Stiftungshofbuchhaltung sub-set and the Signatur 102 sub-series. Stifte und Klöster: Galizien, stored in the Österreichisches Staatsarchiv. I finished the elaboration of these collections with monographic publications. In this article, I also present further archival collections, which, due to time constraints and volume of the material, I was only able to view at random. These are the so-called files on Galician domains and other post-Jesuit files found in the Österreichisches Staatsarchiv. I conducted further research in the archives of the Order of the Society of Jesus and the Benedictines in Vienna, whose archives are of interest to us. In addition, in the article, I refer to research issues related to the archival structure, errors and inaccuracies in nomenclature, as well as scarce interest in the history of the Austrian central administration, and I outline research postulates. One of them is the lack of documentation of Galician domains (clergy and state-owned ones). This hitherto unknown resource is a fundamental historical source. The conducted research contributes to the full study of Galician church archives kept in the collections of the Viennese archives.
