The paper deals with nine authors of contemporary Serbian fiction which represent three narrative strategies: postmodern textual play, rewriting history, and obsessive confession. However, their common interest lies in the reinvention of reality. Dragan Velikić, Mileta Prodanović, Radoslav Petković, Sreten Ugričić and David Albahari manipulate facts and fiction in different ways, exploring the blurry border between the two, and the result of this playful trespassing is metafiction packed with actual events from either recent or remote history. Unlike their male counterparts, Serbian women writers explore the pursuit of happiness as their main motif. Mirjana Novaković, Mirjana Đurđević, Jelena Lengold and Ljubica Arsić either twist master narratives or reinvent intimate stories in order to escape preestablished designs imposed by the male-oriented literary canon.

A comparative approach to literature involves appropriate methodology and terminology apparatus to deal with the intertextuality of a literary work. The book of poetry Tražim pomilovanje by Desanka Maksimović (1898–1993) came into existence as a result of poet’s creative dialogue with Dušan’s Code (Dušanov zakonik), a medieval Serbian book of law, which is also considered a literary work. In the subtext of this collection of poems we can clearly notice a strong intertextual connection to the Bible, and also the wide range of intertextual connections with other literary texts, particulary with the poem “Litany” by the Polish poet Julian Tuwim (1894–1953). Maksimović’s poetry is replete with literary and religious motifs, which makes it easy to recognise its affiliation to the culture and tradition. The aim of this paper is to highlight those intertextual aspects of the poetry collection.

This paper deals with reinstating and explicating types of characters in Slobodan Selenić’s novels. In accordance with the terminology established by Mieke Bal, the characters have been discussed as ‘actors’. The corpus includes all Selenic’s completed novels, while the characters from the novel Malajsko ludilo have not been considered. The paper offers two main types of characters with their sub-types, explaining in what way the writer used the four principles in the creation of characters.

The paper focuses on the comparative analysis of two crime novels: Tito je umro (2011; Tito is Dead) by Mirjana Novaković and Sibir (2011; Siberia) by Vladimir Kecmanović. Both novels offer a vivid cross-section and criticism of modern Serbian society. The aim of the paper is to present these stylistically diverse crime novels as potent catalysts for necessary social change. The theoretical framework of the paper relies on the political insights of Gordić Petković, Veljković, Sotirović, and Spasić, as well as critical approaches by Messent, Clandfield, Simpson, and Glover.
