Příběh kmene

Příběh kmene

Author(s): Zuzana Říhová / Language(s): Czech Issue: 6/2020

In the history of the European avant-garde, zone compositions have appeared along the seams between entities. Likewise Czech avant-gardists saw Apollinaire’s Zone as a poem of transition, and it is essential to identify whence and whither, and to subsequently correct the established explanation of the Czech historical avantgarde’s attitude towards memory and the past. The early Czech avant-garde saw itself as a movement without a history, emerging from point zero, but zone compositions are substantially oriented towards the past. Memory, past and myth form an integral part of zone compositions — the forms of the modern-age epic. Within the context of the long compositions of European modernism, this study analyses Czech zone compositions as a special form of the epic, as an alternative pole of the Czech historical avant-garde.

Autonomizace české literatury

Autonomizace české literatury

Author(s): Martin Hrdina / Language(s): Czech Issue: 1/2021

The aim of this text is to create the preconditions for systematic research into the progress of autonomization of art within Czech culture. Specialist literature for the most part reflects the results of this process, which were striking during the time that modern trends were emerging in the 1890s, but the actual course of the autonomization process particularly from the 1860s to the 1880s has not yet been examined in any detail. After defining the concept of the autonomization of art, the author of the article refers to sociological and literary history research into this issue in the French milieu (Pierre Bourdieu and Michael Einfalt), and in this connection he focuses attention on criticism as a source that is obviously of key importance in acquiring a knowledge of the historical course of the autonomization of Czech literature.

Jak číst barokní legendu?

Jak číst barokní legendu?

Author(s): Marie Škarpová / Language(s): Czech Issue: 2/2021

The aim of the study is to cast doubt on the exposition of the second quarter of the seventeenth century as a time when emigration deprived the Czech lands of readers with higher literary requirements. Proof of this thesis includes the artistic and literary activities of the Prague Monastery of the Barefoot Augustinians at Zderaz, especially a book about St. Wenceslas, published in Czech (1643), German (1643), and Latin (1644). Addressing the question of the adequate narrative representation of the past, the book adopts an even-handed position on the visual and textual components. Moreover, every part of the three-part structured chapters calls for different modes of reception. A more proficient reading literacy is also required.

O konstruktivistce a esencialistovi

O konstruktivistce a esencialistovi

Author(s): Jiří Jelínek / Language(s): Czech Issue: 3/2021

This paper aims to show how two contemporary Czech postmodern writers deal with the fictional renarration of the Libuše myth. Pole a palisáda (The Field and the Palisade, 2006) by Miloš Urban brings forth a traditional conception of the story of the princess who found herself a husband; however, the novella also uses some present-day writing techniques. Vilma Kadlečková wrote her story O snovačce a přemyslovi (The Weaver and the Premeditator, 2007 and 2015) as an answer to Urban’s adaptation and offers a completely different approach, setting the story in the near future and reversing many of its elements. Whereas Urban’s text is essentialist in nature, using ideas such as the rigid positions of the genders and an anthropocentric view of nature as its cornerstones, Kadlečková presents a work of fiction rooted in the postmodern and poststructuralist notion of social constructivism — her novella works with the idea of reality being shaped by what society believes in.

Česká instapoezie

Author(s): Karel Piorecký / Language(s): Czech Issue: 4/2021

The aim of this study is to set out a relevant contextual framework for interpreting poetry published on (Czech) Instagram. The author looks at the material under study from a number of perspectives, including generational, economic and especially media perspectives, ultimately finding adequate contextualization outside the framework of literary discourse and actually within the aesthetics and communication practice of Instagram, while drawing key methodological inspiration from the reflections of new media theorist Lev Manovich. In conclusion, Instapoetry is characterized as a paraliterary phenomenon situated on the margins of the literary system, combining elements of literary and Instagram aesthetics and guided by hybrid economics principles.
