This article provides an overview of knife legislation in selected member states of the European Union. Virtually in all these countries there are laws or regulations forbidding carrying knives in some places or in particular circumstances. However, some of these countries imposed also general bans on the sale and possession of knives of certain technical characteristics or bans on the possession of such knives in public places. Instead of such a ban, or beside it, in various countries there are “soft” restrictions consisting in prohibition of carrying a knife in a public place if, in the existing circumstances, one can assume that the knife is to be used for criminal purposes.
