This paper describes the linguistic features of Moravian Croatian (abbreviated to Mo- Cro), a regional variation of the South Slavic Čakavian dialect once spoken in the southernmost part of Moravia, and examines the sociolinguistic circumstances under which MoCro has been used. The paper is divided into three sections. The first section outlines the history of the Croatian inhabitants in South Moravia, referring to previous studies on Croatian ethnic elements in Moravia and adjacent regions. The second section focuses on MoCro and reveals that it retains Čakavian features but shows at the same time peculiarity as a result of language contact. Based on these findings, the third section deals with the sociolinguistic circumstances to which the Croats in Moravia accommodated themselves. The goal of the paper is to present how social factors can be relevant to language maintenance. The Moravian Croats as well as the Burgenland Croats living in the Austrian state of Burgenland are descendants of ethnic Croats migrated from the northwest part of the Balkan Peninsula during the sixteenth century. In the course of history, most of the Croats settled in South Moravia were assimilated into German or Czech populations, and Croatian trails were lost except for in the three “Croatian” villages of Frielištof (present day Jevišovka), Nova Prerava (Nový Přerav), and Dobro Polje (Dobré Pole). The Croats in these three villages maintained their inherent language as a communication code up to the mid twentieth century. After World War II, however, the Czech Communist regime made a decision to displace the Croats to the northern parts of Moravia, by which the tradition of Croatian culture and language in Moravia was terminated. The author of this paper has conducted research on MoCro and its background history with help of a Croat born in Frielištof. The linguistic analysis shows that MoCro has kept prominent Čakavian features, such as diphthongization of the mid-high vowels, usage of the typical Čakavian interrogative words ča, zač, and kade, and reflex of *ě according to “Meyer-Jakubinski’s law.” In MoCro, at the same time, particular change induced by language contact is observed: German influence is attested particularly at the lexical level, but partly on phrase syntax as well, and Czech influence is manifested in the borrowing of derivational morphemes, verb-inflectional morphemes, and basic functional words. Thus, MoCro can be characterized as a linguistic code with inherent Čakavian features but modified by the language contact situation.

The early modern composite-monarchy Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth possessed Ruthenian lands on its Eastern borderlands. Ruthenia had its historical roots in Kievan Rus, and kept the Orthodox faith within the Catholic-dominant Commonwealth. Orthodoxy (Kievan Metropolitanate) represented Ruthenia’s peculiar regionalism, while Ruthenia had never been given any administrative entity in the Commonwealth. Orthodoxy, which had been tightly connected with Ruthenian regional and ethnic identity, began to be challenged when the Orthodox higher clergy in Ruthenia declared church union with the Catholic Church (Union of Brest, 1596). The majority of the hierarchy accepted Catholic dogma and the Pope’s supremacy on condition that Eastern rites and customs be sustained, while the majority of secular nobles resisted this union. After church union, the Ruthenian Church divided into two: the Uniates and the Disuniates (Orthodox). This church union in Ruthenia and its significance have been studied mainly from three perspectives: church history (both Catholic and Orthodox), Ukrainian national history (Eastern-oriented and Western-oriented), and social structure. In this article, I examine a variety of questions arising from the Union of Brest in Ruthenia, by comparing the ways in which those belonging to different social strata attempted to answer them to satisfy their own interests. The Ruthenian nobility, the sole local group with political rights as a political nation of the Commonwealth, considered that all such confessional issues had to be solved by legal processes, that is, parliamentary activities. Since the majority of the secular Ruthenian nobility was against church union, which might threaten their privilege of freedom of faith, they supported the Orthodoxy’s rights in parliament. These activities produced results even during the reign of King Sigismund III, who was one of main promoters of the church union. When his successor Vladislaus IV was enthroned in 1632, he was so tolerant of non- Catholic faiths as to allow the Orthodox Church in Ruthenia to restore the legal status of its hierarchy. Nevertheless, this event did not resolve the religious split in Ruthenia. It only meant that both the Uniates and the Orthodoxy became legal entities in the Commonwealth. Both of the Ruthenian Eastern Churches remained as secondary religions, lower than the Roman Catholic Church.

Eurasianism was a movement created by a group of Russian émigré linguists, ethnologists, geographers, and historians in the 1920s and 1930s. Although the Eurasianists possessed no political power, their ideas have had a significant influence on a wide range of intellectuals, even to this day. The most famous member of the movement was N. S. Trubetskoy (1890–1938), a renowned linguist. While scholars have examined the political implications of Eurasianism in the context of the 1920s, this essay shifts the emphasis to the academic and theoretical development of Eurasianism from the late 1920s into the 1930s. The examination of this new turn that the Eurasianists went though during this period reveals new aspects of their movement. Trubetzkoy’s linguistic ideas made a major contribution to determining the direction of Eurasianism. My approach to Trubetzkoy’s Eurasianism with much attention paid to his non-political aspects could solve the question of why his social thought was called “Eurasianism” and not “Russianism.” This essay shows that Trubetzkoy suggested Eurasianism as an alternative ideology to Bolshevism, an alternative racial theory to Nazi racism, and an alternative name for the USSR. Trubetzkoy did not support the Bolsheviks during his lifetime. He rather sought to promote an alternative view to Bolshevik policy in many respects. His struggle with Bolshevism led him to forge the idea of Eurasianism. As far as national policy in the Soviet Union was concerned, Trubetzkoy recognized both the applicability and the limits of Eurasianism vis-à-vis the Soviet Union. He claimed that the Soviet assimilation policy was the opposite of national diversity, assuming that every national culture was equally valuable in its uniqueness. Strictly speaking, he disagreed with Soviet national policy, contending that an alternative ideology to Marxism was necessary. Trubetzkoy considered it possible to bring a variety of nations together with their every uniqueness preserved. Accentuating cooperation among various races, Trubetzkoy’s Eurasianism worked as a challenge to Social Darwinism. He was against the concept of the “the struggle for survival,” as he found himself “socially and racially weak” as a Russian émigré in Western Europe. Social Darwinism was a theory of “the strong” at that time. In fact, in his letters to R. Jakobson, Trubetzkoy mentioned the racial discrimination he confronted in daily life. These letters and his article “On Racism” (1935) revealed that Trubetzkoy and his colleagues were already under pressure from the Nazis at that time. In this article, he criticized the Nazi’s Indo-Europeancentrism and racial determinism.

In the past, littoral settlements and population along Drava River were depending a great deal more on »gifts and whims« of Drava River, than it is today. Next to other activities, tied to Drava, lumbering and floating trade had a very important economic role (fljojsarstvoa local term for river lumbering). Since early 19th century until the World War Two, lumber trade was particularly thrived and prospered. The most developed commercial company in lumber and floating established a head office in the town of Donja Dubrava in Međimurje region, close to confluence of Mura into Drava. This is where a large commercial company »Ujlaki-Hirschler and sons« established their offices; on the turn of the 20th century, the company had more than 500 employees. Rafting of lumber in Donja Dubrava took lumber all the way from Maribor to Donja Dubrava and onward to Osijek, Novi Sad, Beograd and Smederevo. This paper describes development of this commercial trade throughout nearly 150 years time, as much as the preserved sources and history enabled.

Gradual stabilization of the imperial borderlands between the Habsburg Monarchy and the Ottoman Empire along the rivers Una and Sava in the period 1718-1739 included farreaching reforms of inherited military border systems on both sides of the frontier. The first objective of those reforms was the establishment of a strict control of any kind of transborder communication of humans and goods. In order to fulfill it, on both sides of the frontier-line it was necessary to build up a relatively large variety of border institutions and prescribe procedures that would serve military purposes, as well as facilitate authorized communications (travel, trade, health conditions, etc.). As a consequence, a relatively large number of (proto)urban centers emerged on neighboring river banks. In some of its aspects, it was almost »hermetically« closed (Cordon Sanitaire). In some others, it was a transfrontalier area of very intensive human contacts and transcultural transfers. This paper will be accomplished on interdisciplinary basis, primarily grounded in eco-history and urban history of imperial borderlands, focused on the river Sava.

The only Slovenian town on an artifical river island (locally known as ‘ada’, or ‘ait’) - Kostanjevica na Krki - is one of the oldest urban settlements in Slovenia; also, the only settlement with a formal status of a town, that has never been walled in. Despite various dangers and threats on the outpost borders of the Empire, it has always enjoyed sufficient protection thanks to its microlocation. This is why all building plans from the Early Middle Ages, to build fortifications, remained untouched. The main function of the river indeed was defense of the settlement and its inhabitants, with very little value in river traffic; up to a point, the only other use it had was fishing and watermills. In historical sources, the river Krka was more frequently mentioned as a negative factor; to the present day, it has been known for its adverse effects and frequent flooding. Particularly harmful effects were produced in the period from the late 17th until the early 19th century, with significant erosion of the river banks, reshaping and cutting down the island itself.

Based of Mateo Pagano’s map made about 1522, author analysed presence of population in the time when area around Krka River was conquering by the Turks. Enabling the oldest detailed insight into the space of Krka area, Mateo Pagani’s map represent an crucial historical sources which show as the last moments of feudal medieval cultural environment. In the time of occurrence of the map, Krka River was borderline between two Croatian famous noble families - Šubić and Nelipić. Along the Krka River bank, these families builded up several fortified medieval settlements, which has an important defending role in the time of ottoman conquest. Concerning the fact that many of this fortified settlement are destroyed during ottoman conquest, Pagano’s map is the only graphic sources that testify about its structure and physiognomy.

This article deals with dates from Croatian early medieval diplomas that could tell us something about water and the rest of contemporary natural environment. Dates from diplomas have been supplemented with the results Croatian and other (Mediterranean) historiographies that deal with early medieval environmental problems, especially water. Modern dates about water, from researched area were also important. Dates about water in Croatian early medieval diplomas are limited almost completely in second half of eleventh century and in the areas of Kvarner, North and Middle Dalmatia. The most important Croatian early medieval settlements ware in countryside with plenty of water sources. These sources became very early private properties. The especially important was rare running water and with running water connected watermills, its role as boundaries between land possessions and the »tool« that directed land routs. In the researched areas especially common were marshes, that were for early medieval man, friendly environment.
