Informal assessment, also called qualitative assessment or qualitative appraisal, has many uses in career counseling. As assessment is an important aspect in the process of career counseling, informal assessment strategies can provide valuable information about clients without some of the concerns associated with formal or standardized assessments, such as cost and training. In this article, several methods of informal assessment are described, as well as some of the benefits and limitations of using informal assessment. Informal assessment methods can be used in many different aspects of career counseling, including investigating clients’ interests, values, personality characteristics, as well as determining knowledge of job hunting strategies and knowledge of the world of work.
