PUBLIC PERCEPTIONS OF THE INTERNATIONAL POSITION OF SERBIA - Opinion poll report

Author(s): Not Specified Author / Language(s): English

Keywords: international relations; Foreign Relations; Media Influence; Euroscepticism; Economic Perception

Serbians are exceptionally interested in international relations and the country’s foreign relations. As many as 65 percent of those polled reported finding out about these issues from television; an additional one-third did so using online news sources, and a final 16 percent relied on social media. The choice of preferred media outlet for accessing foreign policy information depended on educational attainment, age, region, and place of residence. As such, the majority of the Serbian population – those with elementary or secondary education, half of whom are rural residents – is reliant primarily on television as the key source of news in all areas of day-to-day life.

Two countries that citizens of Serbia perceive as Serbia's greatest friends are Russia and China. On the other hand, support for the European integration process is relatively small, while the influence of the United States on Serbia over the years is generally perceived as negative, although a research shows that relations between US and Serbia are improving. Also, citizens often mistakenly believe that the Russia and China are among the biggest donors in Serbia of the past 20 years.

The research itself had two directions, one which fully followed the previous two cycles of research (2010 and 2015) and is a survey of public opinion in informal settlements where members of RAE national minorities live, while the second part of the research was conducted through a series of in-depth interviews with representatives of actors who are directly or indirectly involved in the adoption and implementation of regulations aimed at reducing the occurrence of statelessness.

The texts in this publication have undertaken the difficult task of presenting the complex process of establishing, bringing together and finally organizing Women’s Court for the successor countries of SFR Yugoslavia. Following the premise that Women’s Court is a space for women’s testimonies, a space for hearing women’s voices as well as the space for acknowledging their resistance, in 2010 an initiative to go ahead with this process was revived during the course of which, the preparing and organizing the Women’s Court gathered activists from all successor countries of SFR Yugoslavia.

The same form of protest of the Italian pacifists, February this year, expressed resistance to the war in the bay. They were joined by the English and German pacifists. For weeks, Women in Black in Italy protest against the war in Yugoslavia. AN UNPRECEDENTED ELECTION - Assessment of the electoral process in Serbia since 4 March 2020

Author(s): Not Specified Author / Language(s): English

Keywords: Serbia; Elections; Election Boycott; Democracy; Parliamentary; One of Five Million

The underlying emotional narrative, lack of communication between key political stakeholders, a lengthy series of demonstrations (held under the motto One of Five Million until the eponymous organisation left the protest movement), unhappiness with the state of the country’s democracy and electoral conditions, and in particular dissatisfaction with Parliament due to repeated breaches of parliamentary rules and laws, led a large section of the opposition to first walk out of Parliament and then to call for a boycott of the election. This long-standing political strategy of refusing to attend Parliament gradually worked its way into other areas of politics as well: opposition parties countered the calling of the election by formally launching a boycott campaign with the adoption of the Declaration to Boycott the General Election on 1 February 2020. Yet the seeming unity of the opposition parties and movements had begun to unravel by degrees even before the election was called. In late January, the One of Five Million association, which had spearheaded the demonstrations, announced they would contest the election as others had ‘betrayed the idea of the boycott’. The opposition bloc was also divided around taking part in local elections, with Saša Paunović, Nebojša Zelenović, and Milan Stamatović, the mayors of Paraćin, Šabac, and Čajetina, respectively, resolved to contest local elections in their communities in the teeth of disapproval from much of the opposition.
