More and more interdisciplinary character of translation studies

More and more interdisciplinary character of translation studies

Coraz bardziej interdyscyplinarny charakter badań przekładoznawczych

Author(s): Teresa Tomaszkiewicz / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 31/2016

Keywords: translations studies; object of translation; person of translator; conversational analysis; semiology

In this text the author presents the short history of translations studies and their evolution in the last 70 years. It has to be stressed out that during this period the relations between translation studies and linguistics were very closed. Even now when translation studies are recognised as an independent scientific domain at the universities they still have a strong relationship with many branches of linguistics. More over this interdisciplinary character of translation studies can be seen in the contemporary researches. In the article this theses is exemplified by the relations between translation, conversation analysis and semiology. Also it is underlying the role of the person of translator. The author’s postulate is to use in the description of this scientific field the appellation in plural: translation studies.

On the peripheries of theory – third language in translation

On the peripheries of theory – third language in translation

Na peryferiach teorii – trzeci język w przekładzie

Author(s): Marta Kaźmierczak / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 31/2016

Keywords: Boris Akunin; third language/culture; translation; foreign interpolations

The paper substantiates the importance of the so-called third language (L3) as a translation issue – despite claims that it is straightforward (e.g. by Fyodorov) or, conversely, that it defies TS insight (Bellos). The research so far is summarized and in the empirical part a working typology of techniques applied in translating L3 material is offered, illustrated by extracts from Boris Akunin’s Russian historical detective novels and their Polish renditions. The author pays attention to such questions as the form of notation of L3 elements in the original (in the Cyrillic or Latin alphabet), paratextual strategies and the functions which the foreign interpolations perform in their contexts and macrotexts.

Quod hodie non est cras erit or What is not today shall be tomorrow

Quod hodie non est, cras erit, czyli Czego dziś nie ma, będzie jutro. Qui multum habet, plus cupit, czyli Kto wiele ma, więcej pragnie

Author(s): Urszula Zaliwska -Okrutna / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 31/2016

Keywords: translation theory; lingualisation; neurocognitivism; integrationism; neuroimaging

The article is strongly based on theoretical linguistic assumptions by Jan Baudouin de Courtenay, Sydney M. Lamb, Roy Harris and Bronisław Malinowski, promoting the idea of individual character experience, human cognitive system and language sub-system. The assumption of individual and unique character of experience and language is naturally followed by inquiries into translator’s identity and its effect on the translation activity and product. The achievements in this area are already unquestionable and hard to dismiss; it is, however, deemed necessary and beneficial to extend our investigation by referring to advanced and integrated neuroimaging techniques as well as new discoveries in genetics and molecular biology.

Translation of EU law versus the central concepts of Translation Studies

Translation of EU law versus the central concepts of Translation Studies

Tłumaczenie prawa unijnego a centralne pojęcia przekładoznawstwa

Author(s): Łucja Biel / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 31/2016

Keywords: EU translation; EU law; translation theory; equivalence; translation quality

The objective of the paper was: (1) to analyse EU translation in light of central concepts of Translation Studies, and (2) to attempt a synthesis of numerous studies on EU translation to describe its distinctive features. EU law is adopted in 24 official languages and is applied in 28 Member States. The translation of EU law has an authoritative status. Owing to a complex array of political, procedural, legal and institutional factors, the translation of EU law poses a challenge to central TS concepts, such as a source text and a target text (versus language versions), a translation process (translation as part of a multistage and multilingual drafting process), equivalence (a priori/existential equivalence) and translation quality (uniform application and interpretation of law). The author posits that the translation of EU law is a unique category which requires its own theoretical framework.

Strategie opisu kulturemów w audiodeskrypcji

Author(s): Anna Jankowska,Agnieszka Szarkowska / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 31/2016

Keywords: audio description; culture-bound references; translation strategies

The article presents the issue of using strategies developed in Translation Studies to describe culture-bound elements in audio description. In the first part, the authors discuss the place of audio description in Translation Studies and especially within the field of audiovisual translation and Jakobson’s categories of intersemiotic, intralingual and interlingual translation. Then research on audio description carried out within the framework of Translation Studies and research on culture-bound references in audio description is presented. Finally, the authors present how translation strategies can be applied in audio description of culturebound elements.

Surtitles – translation between art and technology

Na(d)pisy teatralne – translacja pomiędzy sztuką a techniką

Author(s): Małgorzata Czubińska / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 31/2016

Keywords: theatre translation; surtitles; audiovisual translation

Surtitling, one of the multiple modern forms of stage translation, consists in the projection on a screen above the stage the text necessary for the understanding of the original drama. It is also a kind of hybrid form of translation situated between interpretation and translation and between audiovisual and literary translation. Based on the theatre semiotics, the author of this paper will determine the difference between surtitling and other forms of audiovisual translation and traditional theatre translation. The main purpose is to define phases of the work on the French version of surtitles for „(A)pollonia” – Polish drama directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski. As theatre art is always based on collaboration, we will determine and describe the contributions of the translator, director and surtitler to the final result – a play with surtitles.

Keywords: Jewish life;Poland

For nearly 25 years, Kraków, Poland, has been host to the largest Jewish cultural festival in Europe. Remarkably enough, no one has holistically investigated this spectacle and the “community” incorporated by it. The data presented here is the first attempt to answer the questions as to who, what and why, regarding the festival’s participants.
