Nicolae Nicolae Sentivani in the Romanian Revolution of 1848

Nicolae Sentivani în Revoluţia românilor de la 1848

Author(s): Aurel Răduţiu / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 54/2015

Keywords: biography of Nicolae Sentivani (1796-1856); 1848 revolution; Transylvania; 1848 Romanian tribunes and prefects

The study introduces to the reader the biography of a less known, but significant personality among the 19th century Transylvanian Romanians living in the Saxon seat of Orăştie (Mühlbach). Nicolae Sentivani (1796-1856), the author’s ancestor, was the Greek-Catholic priest in Turdaş, then, after his first wife’s death, he remarried, leaving priesterhood, and became the village notary. During the years of the revolution, between May 1848 and the summer of 1849, Nicolae Sentivani involved himself in the organization and struggles of the Romanian revolutionary forces, taking over both the administration and the military control over the Orăştie seat. Historical documents testify his great capacity in working out programmatic acts and grievances of the local Romanian population, as well as his special abilities as a military commander, namely as a tribune (since January 1849) and prefect (since April 1849) at the head of the Romanian legion organized in the Sebeş prefecture. After the revolution, together with other great Romanian revolutionaries from Transylvania, Nicolae Sentivani was decorated by Austrian emperor Franz Joseph, on 16 October 1852 personally receiving for his merits the St. Ann Cross 3d class. Aurel Răduţiu’s study depicts an unknown biographical portrait of a Transylvanian Romanian fourty-eighter, shaping a chapter of local history from Turdaş. Moreover, from now on historiography has to reconsider the multiple roles, as a priest, notary, military leader and national militant, played by this interesting personality, Nicolae Sentivani, including him in the gallery of the forerunners of the Romanian national movement in Transylvania in the first half of the 19th century.

Between literacy and cursus honorum: Ştefan Raţ (cca 1670-†1720)

Între ştiinţa de carte şi cursus honorum: Ştefan Raţ (cca 1670-†1720)

Author(s): Andea Avram / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 54/2015

Keywords: Literacy; scribe (litteratus); estate administrator (provisor); cursus honorum; nobility

This paper targets an analysis of the role the literate education played in the social ascension of a certain Transylvanian chancery scribe, namely Ştefan Raţ (cca.1660-1720). He turned from copyist in the princely chancery to administrator of an estate, and in the end to a member of the nobility. This social evolution was supported by his literate education, by the skills he acquired in the school and during the time he worked for the administration of the fiscal estates of Alba Iulia and Zlatna. He also developed and made a very good use of his high sense of establishing relations of political and religious nature. Everything was rounded out by his natural diplomatic skills, which brought him the supreme accomplishment, his social elevation into the noble class.

Between Passive and Active Anti-Semitism. From the Greek-Catholic Publications Concerning the Solution of the "Jewish Problem" in Europe and Romania

Between Passive and Active Anti-Semitism. From the Greek-Catholic Publications Concerning the Solution of the "Jewish Problem" in Europe and Romania

Author(s): Mihaela Grancea / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 54/2015

Keywords: Church; anti-Semitism; press; ideology; discourse

Most post-communist studies regarding the Greek-Catholic (United) Church in Transylvania and Banat mainly focus on two major research topics, directly relating to the identity and historical legitimacy of the Greek-Catholic belief/cult: the Unification with the Church of Rome and the martyrdom and anti-communist resistance. Other, more recent studies analyze the Church’s important role in the process of political and cultural emancipation of the Romanian nation in Transylvania and Banat during the 18th and 19th centuries, and the relationship between the Church, the Holy See and European Catholicism. Thus, our study cannot benefit from an extensive bibliography This paper will analyze the official discourse of the United Church, particularly as it was recorded in religious press from Transylvania and Banat (see esp. the newspaper “Unirea” (The Union) and the magazine Cultura Creştină (Christian Culture). Tracking the latter discourse has not been an easy undertaking, mainly due to the fact that the dissolution of the Greek-Catholic Church (1948) had also affected the documentary background of this Church in Romania.

Romanian-Russian Relations during of Neutrality (July 21/August 3, 1914 – August 14/27 1916)

Relaţiile româno-ruse în perioada neutralităţii (21iulie/3 august 1914 – 14/27 august 1916)

Author(s): Elena Steluta Dinu / Language(s): Romanian / Issue: 54/2015

Keywords: neutrality; Romania; Russia; First World War; The Entente; International relations

The issue of international relations is one of current and interest for European historiography as interest is based on the need to know the links between states. Similarly the relations between Romania and Russia were based on natural necessity of the existence of such a link. Through this summary we intend to convey a more objective and realistic view on the political and diplomatic relations between Romania and Russia during the 1914-1916 neutrality. Following Crown Council in Sinaia of 21 July / August 3, 1914 Romania adopted the formula of transitory neutrality, that of expectation. With this temporary neutrality Romania made the plunge to its separation from the alliance with the Central Powers, which marked its foreign policy orientation for three decades. Entente, especially Russia, were concerned to remove Romania from the influence of Berlin. For political and military reasons, Romanian diplomacy sought to get closer to Russia since the years before the First World War. Romanian Government was the one that opened the series of Romanian- Russian diplomatic contacts embodied in signing the secret Convention between Romania and Russian of 18 September / 1 October 1914 as well as of the political treaty and diplomatic convention in August 1916 between Romania and the Entente.

A strategic cooperative game-theoretic model for market segmentation with application to banking in emerging economies

A strategic cooperative game-theoretic model for market segmentation with application to banking in emerging economies

Author(s): Faramak Zandi,Madjid Tavana,Aidan O'Connor / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2012

Keywords: bi-level multi-objective optimization; real option analysis; cooperative n-person game; services and product segmentation; emerging market economies; bank market entry; C71; D70; F23;

Market segmentation is essential to target efficaciously core-segment customers and to obtain a competitive advantage. Firms when confronted by the range of market segments, have difficulty in deciding the core-segment customers who are the most probable purchasers of their product and services. We propose a novel fuzzy group multi-criteria method for market entry and segment evaluation and selection. This proposed method provides a comprehensive and systematic framework that combines bi-level multi-objective optimization with real option analysis (ROA) and fuzzy cooperative n-person game theory. The contribution of the proposed segment evaluation and selection method is fivefold: (1) it addresses the gaps in the marketing literature on the efficacious and effective assessment of market segments; (2) it provides a comprehensive and systematic framework that combines bi-level multi-objective optimization with ROA and fuzzy cooperative n-person game theory; (3) it considers fuzzy logic and fuzzy sets to represent ambiguous, uncertain or imprecise information; (4) it does not insist on consensus but synthesizes a representative outcome based on qualitative judgments and quantitative data; and (5) it is applicable to national and international market segmentation. The practical application of this proposed framework illustrates the efficacy of the procedures and algorithms.

An approach to group decision making based on 2-dimension uncertain linguistic information

An approach to group decision making based on 2-dimension uncertain linguistic information

Author(s): Peide Liu / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2012

Keywords: 2-dimension uncertain linguistic variables; multiple attribute group decision making; TOPSIS; D81;

Based on the definition of 2-dimension linguistic information of multiple attribute decision making problems proposed by Zhu, Zhou and Yang (2009), the information on evaluation is extended to 2-dimension uncertain linguistic variables, and a new method is proposed to solve the multiple-attribute group decision making problems in which the attribute values take the form of 2-dimension uncertain linguistic variables and the attribute weights are unknown. Firstly, the II class of uncertain linguistic information is transformed into the subjective weights of the experts, and then the subjective weights, the similarity degree of experts’ evaluation information and authority weights are aggregated to the comprehensive weights of each expert. By the comprehensive weights, the group decision making matrix is produced by weighting evaluation information of each expert. Then the maximum deviation method is used to calculate the attribute weights and TOPSIS method is proposed to rank the alternatives. Finally, an example is given to illustrate the decision-making steps and the effectiveness of this method.

Current state of self-financing of private non-profit organizations in the conditions of the Slovak Republic

Current state of self-financing of private non-profit organizations in the conditions of the Slovak Republic

Author(s): Maria SVIDROŇOVÁ,Gabriela Vaceková / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2012

Keywords: non-profit sector; NGOs; financing; diversification of financial sources; self-financing; L30; L31; L39; H89;

Ensuring the financial stability of non-profit organizations through financial decision in the structure of financial resources is influenced by many objective and subjective factors. However, a necessary presumption of financial stability is to reduce their dependence on one source of funding or in other words, the independence can be achieved by diversifying of the funding sources. And it is the diversification of financial sources and their acquisition through self-financing that we consider as an appropriate way to achieve financial balance and thus long-term existential security of non-profit organizations. This scientific paper presents the partial results of a research of the current state of self-financing and diversification of financial resources of private non-profit organizations in the Slovak Republic. We analysed the primary data by the relevant scientific methods and procedures (selected mathematical-statistical methods, analysed in SPSS – Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). With the analysis we acquired a knowledge which allows us to formulate several solutions and recommendations for theory and practice. By presenting these conclusions we fulfil a scientific goal of the paper, which is to present partial results of research of current state of funding of private non-profit organizations and interpret the obtained outputs in an economic and social context.

Modifying BSC for national nanotechnology development: an implication for “social capital” role in NIS theory

Author(s): Sepehr Ghazinoory,Abdol Soofi / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2012

Keywords: National Innovation System; social capital; Balanced Scorecard; Strategy Map; National Iranian Nanotechnology Initiative; A13; E24; E61; 031;

In this research, we have designed and implemented the Strategy Map and Balanced Scorecard technique in evaluating the progress of National Iranian Nanotechnology Initiative (NINI). In conducting this research, we have learned that the layers of Strategy Map are congruent with the National Innovation System (NIS) levels. The use of Strategy Map and Balanced Scorecard in conjunction with an opinion survey of the nanotechnology experts showed “social capital” at the bottom layer and economic development at the top layer of the Strategy Map of the NIS infrastructure in Iran. These findings have broad implications not only for Iranian nanotechnology development, but also are important for the theory of NIS.

A hybrid MCDM model encompassing AHP and COPRAS-G methods for selecting company supplier in Iran

Author(s): Sarfaraz Hashemkhani Zolfani,I-Shuo Chen,Nahid Rezaeiniya,Jolanta Tamošaitienė / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2012

Keywords: MCDM; AHP; COPRAS-G; hybrid model; selection; construction; supply chain; C44; C51;

This paper is aimed at utilizing a hybrid multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) model for selecting a supplier. First, eight evaluation criteria, including cost, quality, distance, delivery reliability, reputation, technology level, compatibility and development ability are identified. The A nalytic H ierarchical P rocess (AHP) is initially used for calculating the weight of each criterion. The CO mplex PR oportional AS sessment of alternatives to G rey relations (COPRAS-G method) is adopted for ranking and selecting suppliers. In order to illustrate the functional ability of the developed model, Kalleh Company is chosen as a case study and can be used as a pattern for supplier selection and future researches.

Expert evaluation of criteria describing the quality of travelling by international passenger train: technological, economic and safety perspectives

Expert evaluation of criteria describing the quality of travelling by international passenger train: technological, economic and safety perspectives

Author(s): Lijana Maskeliūnaitė,Henrikas Sivilevičius / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2012

Keywords: criteria for passenger transportation; railway; quality; expert evaluation; AHP method; judgement consistency; criterion weight; travel cost; train parameters; criteria for railway; travel safety; cos

The goals, needs and possibilities of interested parties (administration, service staff and passengers travelling in a train) should be taken into account when organizing passenger transportation and making decisions concerning particularly this area. Improvement in passenger transportation (train travel) depends on experience, qualification and decisions made by the experts involved in this process. The paper analyses the performance of the joint-stock company Lietuvos geležinkeliai and examines criteria describing the quality of passenger transportation provided by this organization. The article presents the methods for showing the consistency of respondent and expert judgements on ranking the sets of criteria defining the quality of travelling by train. The significance of the considered criteria is based on a pair wise comparison. The employed method allows for determining the normalized weights of particular criteria with respect to other criteria of the analysed group (A, B, C, D). The article offers an algorithm for displaying the quality of train travel. The ranks assigned to the criteria by train passengers (category K), service staff (category P) and administrative staff (category A) are calculated establishing the differences between the ranks of criteria. The opinions of the respondents and experts belonging to categories K, P and A are compared considering the significance of the adopted criteria. The paper provides the results obtained from the surveyed respondents and experts and presents the ranks given to criterion groups A, B, C, D describing the quality of train travel. Finally, the conclusions based on the performed research are presented.

EUROPEAN union member states preparing for EUROPE 2020. An application of the MULTIMOORA method

EUROPEAN union member states preparing for EUROPE 2020. An application of the MULTIMOORA method

Author(s): Willem Karel M. Brauers,Alvydas Baležentis,Tomas Baležentis / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2012

Keywords: multi-objective optimization; European Union; Ratio System; Reference Point Method; Full Multiplicative Form; MULTIMOORA; C44; E61; F59; M2; O22;

It is the intention of the European Union to create a growing and sustainable European economy by 2020, a much more moderate target than the 2010 target of becoming the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world. This intention has to be supported by an adequate Optimization and Decision Support System.Therefore, MULTIMOORA is proposed. MULTIMOORA is a quantitative method, which compares multiple and optimum objectives, expressed in different units, as much as possible on a non-subjective basis. In opposition to similar methods MULTIMOORA does not need normalization, being based on dimensionless measures. Importance of an objective can eventually be given by the stakeholders concerned. MULTIMOORA is composed of three approaches: Ratio System, Reference Point and Multiplicative Form Methods, all of the same importance and each controlling each other. Twenty two objectives, 10 originating from statistics and 12 from statistics and forecasts, important for the future, characterize the 27 EU-Countries economies as a preparation for 2020. Which of these countries are the best prepared for 2020? A Dominance Theory, summarizing the three obtained ordinal numbers per country, ranks the 27 countries for that purpose.

Telehealth, sustainable economic development, and social welfare

Telehealth, sustainable economic development, and social welfare

Author(s): Fuhmei Wang / Language(s): English / Issue: 4/2012

Keywords: Telehealth; in-person health care; economic growth; welfare; I18; O11; O41;

Country experiences in Australia, New Zealand, Norway, Taiwan, and UK have been in favor of telehealth services since the early 1990s. Though a few studies do discuss evidence of the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of telehealth programs, the literature might limit to financial evaluation. This research investigates the welfare implications of conventional in-person and telecommunications health care as improving health levels or preventing health from deterioration for efficient resource allocation by incorporating government intervention for equal accessibility of health care in the economic progress perspective. Analytical findings indicate that the inverse U shape relationship between telehealth expenditure share and social welfare status exists as the nonlinear nexus between telehealth expenditure share and economic growth presents. The health dividend in terms of an enhanced economic growth rate can be achieved only when the initial share of telehealth expenditure is smaller than the growth-maximizing share. For economic sustainable development, telehealth initiatives strengthen rather than compete with conventional in-person health care. Research results guide the countries, which have or will have telehealth systems, for effectively allocating medical resources to stimulate economic growth and improve the population's well-being.

Intuitionistic fuzzy prioritized operators and their application in multi-criteria group decision making

Intuitionistic fuzzy prioritized operators and their application in multi-criteria group decision making

Author(s): Dejian Yu / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2013

Keywords: Multi-criteria group decision making; aggregation operator; intuitionistic fuzzy set; intuitionistic fuzzy prioritized weighted average (IFPWA) operator; intuitionistic fuzzy prioritized geometric (IF

Intuitionistic fuzzy set is a very useful tool to depict uncertainty. Lots of multi-criteria group decision making methods under intuitionistic fuzzy environment have been developed. Current methods are under the assumption that the criteria and the decision makers are at the same priority level. However, in real group decision making problems, criteria and decision makers have different priority level commonly. In this paper, multi-criteria group decision making problems where there exists a prioritization relationship over the criteria and decision makers are studied. First, the intuitionistic fuzzy prioritized weighted average (IFPWA) and the intuitionistic fuzzy prioritized weighted geometric (IFPWG) operators are proposed. Then, some of their desirable properties are investigated in detail. Furthermore, the procedure of multi-criteria group decision making based on the proposed operators is given under intuitionistic fuzzy environment. Finally, a practical example about talent introduction is provided to illustrate the developed method.

A complex proportional assessment method for group decision making in an interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy environment

A complex proportional assessment method for group decision making in an interval-valued intuitionistic fuzzy environment

Author(s): Seyed Hossein Razavi Hajiagha,Shide Sadat Hashemi,Edmundas Kazimieras Zavadskas / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2013

Keywords: multiple criteria decision making; uncertainty; COPRAS; interval valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets; C02; C44; G32;

Multi-criteria decision making is an implicational field that concerns with selecting or designing the best scenarios among a finite set of scenarios based on a finite set of criteria. Different methods and techniques for handling this issue have been proposed. Complex proportional assessment is an analytical tool for solving multi-criteria decision making problems. Originally, the COPRAS method has been developed for decision making under a deterministic environment. Since uncertainty is an unavoidable property of decision making due to a lack of knowledge, this paper suggests an extended form of the COPRAS method used for group decision making problems in an uncertain environment where such uncertainty is captured through a generalized form of fuzzy sets - the so called interval valued intuitionistic fuzzy sets. An algorithmic scheme for the COPRAS-IVIF method has been introduced thus examining its application with reference to two numerical examples. It seems that the recommended framework of COPRAS-IVIF can be satisfactorily implemented in decision making problems under ambiguous and ill-defined conditions.
