The Burden of the Balkans

Author(s): Edith Durham / Language(s): English

At the end of 1903, the British traveller and writer Edith Durham (1863-1944) departed for a five-month stay in the Balkans to take part in humanitarian work on behalf of the Macedonian Relief Committee. This journey and the appalling situation in the rebellious region are the focus of her book „The Burden of the Balkans“ (published initially in London in 1905). It also includes an account of her first lengthy expedition, on horseback and on foot, through the wilds of southern and central Albania.With the many dashes of irony and humour, at which Edith Durham was a master, „The Burden of the Balkans“ is a work that can still be savoured by all.

Albania. The Land of the Skipetarians

Albanien. Das Land der Skipetaren

Author(s): Hugo Bernatzik / Language(s): German

Keywords: Albania;

If it were to my heart, I would begin this book with the words: It is untrue that Albania is a country full of robbers and dangers, ruled by an operetta king under the lictor's ax of the mighty Mediterranean, that it looks somehow like those Caucasian principalities that American film-kitsch wants to make us believe as the setting for the ever popular court intrigues. It is untrue that the Skipetarian population is divided into two classes, the urban proletariat of the intelligentsia, and all the rest of the rest, who scowl like astrologers in illustrated advertisements and handle the rifle with habitual determination. It is also untrue that forests and swamps are literally teeming with rare game, which European travel hunters, who are immortalized in the picture with their slain lions, could offer a welcome and easy change. So much is untrue that is being spread about this strange country and that is being used in Western ideas. TRUE IS MUCH MORE ... (this, the author is offering in his book)

Lebenserinnerungen Band I

Author(s): Eqrem Bey Vlora / Language(s): German

Those are the 2 volumes memoirs of the son of an Albanian beylik family of landowners. Unless Ahmet Muhtar Zogolli (later King Zogu) wouldn’t have been so successful in his political strategies and ambitions since 1912, Eqrem Bey Vlora may have been the favourite candidate for the throne of an Albanian kingdom. In his memoirs he tells an Albanian-European biography of the first half of the 20 century, between Vlora, Istanbul, Italy, Bavaria, Austria… always with a patriotic look to his homeland in the Balkans.
