"Broń mnie przed sobą samym…" jako modlitwa i kontemplacja Boga

Author(s): Anita Całek / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

The article proposes a new approach to read Mickiewicz’s poem "Broń mnie przed sobą samym…" [Defend Me Against Myself…] in the context of meditative prayer and demeanour of contemplating God. Recalling orthodox contexts such as negative theology (apophatic), Christology, the "Old" and the "New Testament", "The Imitation of Christ" by Thomas à Kempis and the "Spiritual Exercises" by Ignatius Loyola, the author shows correlations between Mickiewicz’s poem and Catholic mysticism, offering a counterbalance to the existing interpretations (J. Kleiner, S. Makowski, I. Jokiel, J. Lyszczyna and others) focused on theosophical and heterodoxal themes predominantly.

Jan Smetanski (1881-1959), a Lviv natural historian and a high school teacher, was an avid bibliophile. He assembled a rich collection of 40,000 volumes, which was removed from Lviv after the war and located first in Przemysl and then in Katowice. After the owner died, the collection was dispersed. Some of the books were purchased by the Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, a part by the Silesian Library in Katowice, a fragment of the collection remained in the possession of the family. The article discusses a fragment of Jan Smetanski’s collection kept in the collections of the Silesian Library.

The article discusses two Czech translations of Leśmian’s "Dziewczyna" and "Szewczyk" – Jan Pilař Děvče and Ševčík, and Vlasta Dvořácková Dívka and Švícko – and one Slovak translation: Juraj Andričik’s Dievča and Čižmárik. "Heart of Darkness": piercing the silence

"Heart of Darkness": piercing the silence

Author(s): Almas Khan / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2014

‘Dead silence’ can resonate with more meaning than the spoken word, the absence of oral discourse signaling the presence of an unsettling subject, as Edward Said commented in Culture and Imperialism. Heart of Darkness pierces this silence through its assessment of Victorian society’s corrosive capitalist core. The novella’s symbolism and collapse of binaries anticipates modernism, and these techniques allow Conrad to censure white men, both those with real and petty power; and white women, who are depicted as colonialism’s passive or active enablers. This portrayal ultimately condemns the characters’ brutality even as it expresses cynicism about humanity’s potential for compassion.

"Juliusz i Ethel" – historia małżeństwa Rosenbergów w dramacie Leona Kruczkowskiego z 1954 roku. Elementy dyskursu antywojennego w literaturze polskiej we wczesnych latach 50.

Author(s): Marcin Wieczorek / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 01/2017

The text discusses the play about the last hours of life of the Rosenbergs titled Juliusand Ethel, the history of the trial, passing the sentence and the execution of Julius and EthelRosenbergs carried out on June 19, 1953. Besides Senator Joseph Raymond McCarthy’s“witch-hunt”, this is the second most famous example of the American anti-communistatmosphere of the early 1950s, which led to the crisis of the democratic order and itsinstitutions in the United States. The case took place at the beginning of the Cold Wardivision of the world and the nuclear arms race, which put the world on the brink of selfdestruction. For the US radicals and the left-wing intellectuals, the Rosenbergs belonging to the US Communist Party are victims of the right-wing witch-hunt, creating anti-communistatmosphere, however they are also perceived as patrons of antiwar movements, precursors ofthe nuclear weapons opponents movement (the espionage, which they had never confessedto was to concern passing secrets about the US nuclear weapons programs to the Russians). For conservative America this will be a story about the efficiency of the legal, politicaland moral system facing a real threat in the fight against communism – dangerous for theentire civilized democratic world. How does the socialist realism work by Leon Kruczkowski appear against this background?

"La Cathedrale" Joris-Karla Huysmansa a mit katedry gotyckiej

Author(s): Wojciech Bałus / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 04/2007

In the novel "La Cathedrale" published in 1897, Joris-Karl Huysmans attempted to understand the phenomenon of the gothic cathedral, using the example of Notre-Dame in Chartres. The article shows how the author's interpretation are based on the 19th-century thought, and they came from. Huysmans saw gothic cathedrals as a religious phenomenon, which was contradictory to tradition introduced by Victor Hugo. While analyzing the symbolism of the architecture as well as the iconography of the sculptures and stain-glass windows, he followed the 19th-century archeology and Christian iconography which attached symbolic meaning to all elements in the church.

"Le Château noir, ou les Souffrances de la jeune Ophelle": entre Madame de Genlis et Mrs Radcliffe

"Le Château noir, ou les Souffrances de la jeune Ophelle": entre Madame de Genlis et Mrs Radcliffe

Author(s): Łukasz Szkopiński / Language(s): French / Publication Year: 0

The first part of the paper will focus on Anne-Jeanne-Félicité Mérard de Saint-Just’s two novels, "Mon journal d’un an, ou Mémoires de Mademoiselle de Rozadelle-Saint-Ophelle" (c. 1788) and "Démence de Madame de Panor, en son nom Rozadelle Saint-Ophèle" (1796). A special emphasis will be put on the possible literary influence of Madame de Genlis and her "Histoire de la duchesse de C***", particularly on the first of the two books. The motive of “folle d’amour”, clearly present in the second novel, will also be explored. Finally, the manner in which Mérard de Saint-Just, undoubtedly inspired by the popularity of the English Gothic fiction, reused these two texts while publishing her next novel, "Le Château noir, ou Les souffrances de la jeune Ophelle" (1798/1799), will be analyzed.

"Little Allies": Hermynia Zur Mühlens Märchen als phantasievolle Lernspiele

Author(s): Christiane Baumann / Language(s): English,German / Publication Year: 0

Zur Mühlen is known as the most important German-speaking author of proletarian fairy tales. This essay examines the concept of propaganda and the meaning of play in her writing style, which not only set the theme for her fairy tales throughout the 1920s, but also for her last fairy-tale collection, Littles Allies, which was neglected by researchers. This article debunks the widespread theory that Zur Mühlen gave up her leftist beliefs and returned to her Catholic roots while in exile.

Author(s): Beata Waligórska-Olejniczak / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 04/2011

“NAKED LIFE” OF VENITCHKA YEROFEYEV, OR MOSCOW – PETUSHKI FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF SERGEI EISENSTEIN’S THEORY OF MONTAGE Summary The article is an attempt to conduct a comparative analysis of Venedikt Yerofeyev’s Moscow – Petushki in the context of Sergei Eisenstein’s theory of montage, which was derived from the combination of montage of attractions, analogies and antitheses. Treating Eisenstein’s experience as the point of reference I focus on the techniques used in Yerofeyev’s text, whose target are the reactions of the virtual recipient, for example the juxtaposition of apparently unconnected shots in order to shock the reader. My paper turns attention to the use made of various artistic means such as the leitmotif of alcohol consumption exposed in the poem, pauses, counterpoints or manipulation of emotionally intensified episodes.
