Nechama Tec (15 maja 1931 – 3 sierpnia 2023)

Author(s): Karolina Panz,Małgorzata Melchior / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 19/2023

Keywords: obituary; Nechama Tec; Holocaust;

Author(s): Marek Kunder / Language(s): Slovak / Issue: 1/2024

Keywords: Propaedeutic class; Candidate for priesthood; Candidate profile; Archdiocese of Košice; Di-ocese of Rožňava

The existence of the propaedeutic class at the Priest Seminary in Košice as the first project of its kind in Slovakia provides an opportunity to examine the candidates who attended and shaped it over the course of seven years. The author's research attempts to present the profile of those who entered the propaedeutic program and examines them from the perspective of eight parameters – age, place of origin, family, siblings, attendance at a church school, time of entry into the seminary, altar serving, and the influence of a priest. The aim of the research is to confirm or refute the proposed hypotheses and to abstract the reality we live in from the profiles of the candidates. We will also attempt to outline further development paths for a positive response from young people deciding to choose a consecrated life – the priesthood.

Real Estate as Investment Instruments in Poland Between 2020 and 2023

Real Estate as Investment Instruments in Poland Between 2020 and 2023

Author(s): Justyna Rybacka / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2024

Keywords: real estate; investment instruments; property;

Theoretical background: The article constitutes an analysis of the macroeconomic situation from 2020 to the first quarter of (Q1) in relation to real estate investments. Factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the influx of refugees to Poland, and rising inflation had a significant impact on investor behavior in the discussed market. The dynamic macroeconomic situation also led to changes in consumer and tenant pref- erences, while significantly affecting demand and supply. The years 2020–2023 (Q1) were characterized by a distinct specificity that accentuated the risks associated with real estate investments. This emphasized clear differences in various categories between real estate as investment assets and funds, securities, or other alternative investment methods.Purpose of the article: The aim of the article is to identify the risks associated with real estate investment in Poland during the period from 2020 to 2023 (Q1). It is also crucial to describe the macroeconomic aspects and their impact on the investment real estate market during the mentioned period.Research methods: The article presents the results of an empirical study aimed at identifying factors contributing to the increase in risk associated with real estate investment in the years 2020–2023 (Q1). Additionally, it was significant to verify the financing methods for the purchase of investment properties by the survey participants. The study was based on a survey questionnaire. A total of 250 respondents partici- pated in the study, expressing their willingness to purchase their first or subsequent property for investmentpurposes during the years 2020–2023 (1Q). Respondents were asked 7 questions, including those related to factors influencing or hindering the completion of investment property transactions in the years 2020–2023 (Q1), as well as the method of financing the purchase and the reason why respondents utilized borrowed capital or relied solely on their own funds. Furthermore the article employed a research methodology that included critical analysis of secondary sources, as well as methods such as analysis, synthesis, description, deduction, induction, and reduction. The Polish and foreign literature related to investment and investment properties was subjected to analysis. Additionally, laws, resolutions, regulations, scientific works from other organizations, and reports were studied, serving as valuable sources of information about the real estate market situation from 2020 to 2023 (Q1). In formulating recommendations, a generalizing-synthesizing method was employed (deduction, reduction, induction). The inductive method aided in analyzing the sig- nificance and characteristics of investment properties. On the other hand, the deductive method was used to analyze the issue starting from the macroeconomic situation in Poland and delving into the changes in the investment real estate market. By making a critical analysis of the literature, the reduction technique was applied, thus, verifying the previously formulated hypotheses.Main findings: Based on the conducted analysis, it can be observed that the return on equity (ROE) from real estate investments takes on a negative value when investors partially use borrowed capital. This situation is influenced by high interest rates. However, alongside this factor, there is also a social element related to the high demand for property rentals. In the case of investors investing solely from their own sources, this leads to a return on equity ranging between 2.7% and 3.6% during the analyzed time period. The conducted analysis reveals that macroeconomic, social, and legal factors dynamically shape the demand and supply in the real estate market during the period from 2020 to 2023 (Q1). This is closely related to the decisions of investors aiming to invest their capital in investment properties.

The Housing ‘Problem’ Representations in Polish Housing Policy Discourse from 2016 to 2023

The Housing ‘Problem’ Representations in Polish Housing Policy Discourse from 2016 to 2023

Author(s): Aleksandra Zubrzycka-Czarnecka / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2024

Keywords: housing ‘problem’; Foucauldian-inspired policy discourse analysis; Poland; WPR approach;

This paper utilises a Foucauldian-inspired policy discourse analysis, specifically employing Carol Bacchi’s ‘What’s the Problem Represented to Be’ approach, to explore the discursive construction of the housing ‘problem’. The focus of the research done for this paper was on housing policy discourse in Poland between 2016 and 2023. The study identifies two predominant representations of the housing ‘problem’: (1) the perception of an overly de- commodified public sector and an inadequately decommodified private sector in housing; and (2) the insufficient support provided for middle-income families’ home-ownership. The reconstructed housing ‘problem’ representations relate to two political rationalities (discourse of sustainable development and housing rights, and neoliberal housing policy discourse) that shape the current housing policy in Poland. They have important implications for the housing domain (analysed as discursive effects, subjectification, and lived effects).

Trademark Dispute: Case Study of Supreme Court Decision No 161K/PDT.SUS.HKI/2023

Author(s): Ahmad Janu Kurniawan,Zainal Asikin,Abdul Atsar / Language(s): English / Issue: 5/2024

Keywords: trademark dispute; cassation decision; Legal Certainty;

The advancement of science has resulted in human intellectual capabilities to create various works, whether in the form of technological innovations, art, or literature. The dispute between the trademarks MS GLOW and PS GLOW did not conclude in commercial court. Instead, it reached the cassation level with decision No 161k/Pdt.Sus.HKI/2023. This research aims to explain the substance of cassation decision No 161k/Pdt.Sus.HKI/2023 and analyze the considerations made by the cassation judges in that verdict. The study used a normative legal research method utilized legislative, conceptual, and case approaches. The legal materials encompass primary, secondary, and tertiary legal sources. The analysis technique involved prescriptive analysis, which was then interconnected in such a way as to create coherent and systematic writing. Subsequently, the legal materials were classified and interconnected deductively, allowing for conclusions to be drawn from the core issues formulated. The results of this study explain that the cassation judges, in deciding this case, have disregarded the principles of justice and legal certainty. Additionally, the researcher found errors by the cassation judges in providing legal considerations in this decision.

Coins discovered during an archaeological excavation on the territory of Philippopolis in 2023

Author(s): Ivo Topalilov,Varbin Varbanov / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2023

Keywords: Hellenistic; Roman; Late antique; coins; Philippopolis; Thrace

The main purpose of this article is to present very briefly the coins discovered during rescue archaeological excavation of an ancient and late antique settlement located in the hinterland of Philippopolis. The significance of the discovered coins is of particular importance for the study of the relationship between the city and its adjacent rural territory in the pre-Roman, Roman and Late Antique periods. In the case of Philippopolis, these connections remain beyond the attention of scholars for the time being. The significance of the coins discovered is clearly evident in the fact that among them there are some that have not been found so far during archaeological excavations in Bulgaria, and others are unknown to science.

The Personalization of Politics in Türkiye During the Rule of the Justice and Development Party (2002–2023)

Author(s): Dominika Liszkowska / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2024

Keywords: erdoganizacja; przywództwo polityczne; erdoganization; personalization of politics; personalizacja polityki; Türkiye; political party; partia polityczna; Turcja; political leadership

Since 2002, the Justice and Development Party and its undisputed leader, the current leader of the state, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, have enjoyed unwavering support on the Turkish political scene. The processes taking place in Türkiye are referred to as the “erdoganisation of Turkish politics.” It is happening both at the level of the state’s internal policy and foreign policy, referred to as “Erdoğan’s foreign policy.” These processes are proceeding in parallel with the growing role that Erdoğan plays in his own party. He became the undisputed leader of the party, and then of the entire state. He is also positively evaluated in the societies of other Muslim states. In the case of Türkiye, an important issue that required analysis was the adaptation of institutional solutions to the changing position of individual entities and paying attention to strengthening the role of the individual/leader within the political system of the state.

15 października 2023 r. – święto czy porażka demokracji bezpośredniej?

Author(s): Magdalena Wrzalik,Aldona Domańska / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2024

Keywords: secret ballot; plebiscyt; plebiscite; Tajność głosowania; State; Election; Commission; nationwide referendum; referendum ogólnokrajowe Państwowa; Komisja Wyborcza; demokracja bezpośrednia

This publication aims to present the most important problems that occurred in connection with the referendum, which, despite numerous voices of opposition, took place on October 15, 2023. It was also the day on which elections to the Sejm and Senate were to be held. Therefore, the authors decided not to refer to or comment on the extensive discussion of doctrinal issues related to the referendum, but to address only the practical dimension of the vote held in order to formulate de lege lata conclusions. The subject of the analysis was the issue of the validity and binding nature of the referendum, as well as the issue of the refusal of the voter to collect the referendum ballot in connection with the implementation of the principle of secrecy of the vote, which provokes many controversial assessments.
