Imaginary Love in the Context of Emotional Consumption: A Levinasian Perspective

Imaginary Love in the Context of Emotional Consumption: A Levinasian Perspective

Imaginary Love in the Context of Emotional Consumption: A Levinasian Perspective

Author(s): Yi Qin / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: face; mask; emotional labor; emotional consumption; Levinas;

This article analyses love that emerges in dancing clubs, by integrating Emmanuel Levinas' ethics of face with sociological theories on emotional consumption. The seemly ideal appearance of a strip dancer with which a regular customer falls in love is not a true display of her authentic self, but rather a mask, which is a product of her emotional labor, sold to increase her income. The customer develops emotional ties with this fabricated persona and desires her love in return. In a commercial context, the customer often fails to recognize her complex subjectivity and to welcome her true otherness. He exploits her emotional labor, while she manipulates his emotions for money. His love, which is predicated on an imaginary foundation, cannot sustain outside of dance clubs. A "mask" and a Levinasian "face" may share the same physical body yet have distinct personalities, and can thus be confusing. Levinas' ethics calls for our immediate responsibility in the face of the Other. However, not all appearances of the Other are authentic. Sometimes it is even part of one's job to be disguised, such as in the case of strip dancers, actors, etc. It is vital to first identify and embrace the Other's true face before engaging in a relationship which requires mutual responsibility.

Nuclear Policy in Equation of Power Balance

Nuclear Policy in Equation of Power Balance

Nuclear Policy in Equation of Power Balance

Author(s): Florian Râpan / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: disarmament; international cooperation; nuclear hazard;

After the end of the Cold War, it was attempted to create the appropriate framework for progress in armaments control and disarmament. Although there have been fundamental changes in international relations and the security environment, efforts and initiatives in the field have proved to be often free from obstacles and disagreements. One reason for this is due to the increase in the number of states involved in the negotiations and, implicitly, the multiplication of political, economic and security interests. The logic of the bipolar world and nuclear deterrence, characteristic of the Cold War, did not take into account the security aspirations of other state actors. Currently, nuclear weapons, although necessitating an internationally sustained dialogue, raise issues that make it difficult to cooperate in this area. Owners cannot be subjected to collective sanction. Theoretically, they have great freedom of action, which can ultimately be restrained only by other nuclear powers. In addition, the idea of an anti-missile shield is increasingly being discussed, but in the absence of bilateral or multilateral agreements limiting the number and location of ballistic interceptors that can be placed by different states.

Brief Considerations on the Relevance of the Inter-Religious Dialogue for the Mediation of the Conflicts and the Abolition of the Religious Violence from an Orthodox Perspective

Author(s): Stelian Manolache / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: postmodernity; person; Christian ontology; inter-religious;

In a globalized world, where the poverty from side of the world is in contrast with the richness of another part, where the big cultures try to put in the shadow the small cultures of the world, religion will assume as main missionary objective the research of the manner in which the ethical discourse, the spiritual values and the philanthropic actions - determinant markers of any contemporary religion – can mediate the conflicts, the disputes and the violence inspired by religion or with inter-religious connotations. We intend to present brief considerations on the capacity of the institutionalized Christian religion to fulfill, through dialogue, the ontological and social vocation for the absorption of the violence through an irenic social-philanthropic action inspired by religion.

The Legal Status Regarding the Romanian Tax Executor

Author(s): Alice Maria Cristina Zdanovschi / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: court executor; enforceable title; forced execution; tax executor; taxpayer;

This article focuses on the legal provisions governing the institution of the Romanian tax executor and aims to identify its legal status, by presenting its role and tasks in the tax execution procedure, and at the same time presents comparative aspects between the tax executor and the court executor. So, the forced execution of fiscal obligations is a way of extinguishing them. Furthermore, according to the special provisions existing in the field of taxation, when the taxpayers have not fulfilled their fiscal obligations at the date when they became due, the right of the state to pass to forced execution of the fiscal obligations is born on this date. And due to the enforceability of the title of the tax claim, the forced execution procedure carried out by the tax authorities is not preceded by another judicial procedure. Moreover, the tax authorities fulfill the forced execution procedure through tax executors, thus, the importance of its legal status is more than relevant compared to the “common law” executor in the Romanian legal system, which is the court executor.

Formal Institutional Factors Influencing the Entrepreneurial Intent in Quindío (Colombia)

Author(s): Edwin Tarapuez,Beatriz Guzmán-Díaz,Ramiro Parra-Hernández / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Douglas North; entrepreneurial intent; entrepreneurship; institutionalism;

The objective of this research is to analyze the formal institutional framework that influences the intention to create companies in the department of Quindío (Colombia). The study is descriptive and uses the transversal-nature non-experimental methodology. According to the structure of the project and the type of information collected, the research is mixed natured. This work involves obtaining information from two groups of sources that were chosen by convenience: fourteen public and private institutions connected to entrepreneurship in the region, to which a semi-structured questionnaire was applied, and four experts on entrepreneurship on whom an unstructured interview was applied. The research uses the theoretical institutional framework proposed by Douglas North as regards formal institutions. The findings conclude that the works by the different formal entities that support entrepreneurship in Quindío is disperse and that they are not articulated in a specialized and collaborative work scheme that fosters the achievement of a common goal to generate a positive impact of greater magnitude at the departmental level.

The Effectiveness of Administrative Consolidation Processes in Urban Functional Areas

The Effectiveness of Administrative Consolidation Processes in Urban Functional Areas

Author(s): Marian Kachniarz,Zbigniew Piepiora / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: urban functional area; administrative consolidation; public services; inter-communal cooperation;

Urban functional areas usually extend beyond the city's administrative boundaries. As a result, there is a problem of coordinating effective public service provision between the city and its suburbs. A review of world experience shows that two institutional solutions are usually applied here – intercommunal cooperation or adaptation of administrative borders to the scope of the functional zone. However, the studies so far have not provided an answer as to which method is more effective. The objective of the paper is to compare the processes of adapting administrative borders to urban functional areas. The hypothesis was formulated that uniform management of the entire functional area favors effectiveness and institutional sustainability of public service provision. Princeton in the USA and Lubin in Poland were selected as case studies. Princeton is an example of successful administrative consolidation of the city with the surrounding rural commune, while in Lubin, unfortunately, such a project was not implemented. In the conclusion was found that inter-communal cooperation does not provide sustainable solutions and is exposed to cadenza changes of decision-makers. The most effective seems to be the consolidation of individuals, but its success depends on a very well prepared and transparent procedure.

Behaviors of Professional Athletes in Terms of the Big Five Model Due to the Type of Contact of the Sport Discipline

Author(s): Paweł Piepiora / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: behaviours, sporpsychology; personality; NEO-FFI; type of contact;

Sports disciplines can be divided due to the type of contact allowed with the opponent. We distinguish disciplines with direct and indirect contact as well as non-contact disciplines. The intention of this study was to check if the behavior of professional athletes is determined by the type of contact of sports disciplines. 180 competitive athletes from six sport disciplines, i.e. luge, tennis, wrestling, team mountaineering, volleyball and rugby, were purposefully selected for the study. The research method used was the NEO-FFI Personality Inventory. It was shown that specific samples - lugers, team mountaineers and rugbists are characterized by low neuroticism in relation to tennis players, wrestlers and volleyball players. Athletes of non-contact disciplines stand out by low neuroticism in relation athletes of indirect and direct contact disciplines. Team athletes are distinguished by low neuroticism in relation to individual athletes. On this basis, the following conclusions were made. The behavior of athletes depends on the type of contact of the sport discipline. Behavioral profiles are specific to the requirements of a given sport discipline and are consistent with the average profile of behavior of all athletes, characterized by high conscientiousness and extraversion, average openness to experience and agreeableness. Factors Affecting Executive Compensation

Author(s): Ivana Marinović Matović / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: executive compensation; executive compensation components, executive compensation factors; salary; incentives;

Executive managers represent the smallest percentage of employees in a business organization, but also the most important. An ideal executive compensation strategy ensures retaining and attracting the best talents, while minimizing the fluctuations. Executive compensation consists of basic pay, short and long-term incentives, benefits and perquisites. Since the 1970s, executive compensation started and continued to grow exponentially. The compensation ratio between executive manager and average employee has increased year by year. For these reasons, special attention of the scientific and general public is paid to the executive compensation, and to the factors affecting its level and structure. The paper provides an overview of factors that may influence the executive compensation, while seeking to determine the executive compensation strategy design, that supports the long-term business objectives. The paper analyzes the effect of organizational size, growth opportunities and risk, ownership and capital structure, as well as manager age, on the level and structure of executive compensation.

“Nano-Killers”. Aluminium Toxicity in the Human Body

Author(s): Georgiana Mardare (Balusescu),Oana Horhogea / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: aluminum; emotional disorder; heavy metals; intoxication; suicide;

In order to be in a permanent equilibrium, the human body needs small quantities of heavy metals. When heavy metals from water, air or ingested food exceed normal concentrations, they can be a real danger to the health of the individual, causing health disorders that can culminate in the death of the person. But what can happen when these small amounts of heavy metals are introduced into the body, constantly, at short intervals? If in the bone, aluminum replaces calcium in the mineralization process, can we consider that the body can gradually adapt and accept a higher concentration of heavy metals without completely attacking and destroying any organ? Can heavy metals become "invisible enemies", difficult to detect, due to events similar to other diseases? Can, also, all these reactions of the body to intoxicating, against a background of emotional disturbance, to push the subject to suicide?

International Events and Grand Strategy Adjustment after the Cold War: Examining Chinese Grand Strategy Using a Neoclassical Realist Model

Author(s): Leo S. F. Lin / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Chinese grand strategy; neoclassical realism; foreign policy;

There is a two-fold purpose of this paper. First, the author attempts to test whether the Type III of the neoclassical realism model developed by Ripsman et al. (2016) has better explanatory power on China’s grand strategy adjustment after the Cold War era than other models. Second, the author examines how international events have impacted Chinese grand strategy adjustment in the everchanging systematic dynamics. The author argues that Type III of the neoclassical realism model provides a suitable model to explain a state’s grand strategy adjustment, as this model can explain medium to longer-term dependent variables. According to the model, unit-level factors, such as leader images and strategic culture, have impacted the grand strategy decision-making and its foreign policy implementation, which resulted in the grand strategy adjustment over a long period. In terms of the case study, the author succinctly traces and examines how international events have impacted China’s grand strategy, such as the dissolution of Soviet Union (1989), 9/11 terrorist attacks (2001), and the Global financial crisis (2008). This paper contributes to the study of Chinese grand strategy.

The Somatic Idiomatic “Fear” Concept in the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah

Author(s): Mirela Beatris Munteanu / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: affectives; fear; fright; emotion;

In this article we intend to study lexemes that express emotions produced by fear from the perspective of lexicography and prophetic semantics, the lexem generating, depending on the relationship between the linguistic sense and the literary image, different directions of meaning: direct through constitutive features of the semantics of ascending emotions or indirect, through the syntactic structures in which they integrate. From the perspective of conceptual analysis (studying the meaning of all the words and expressions that are associated with a certain concept and which includes their systematization) we defined the term as a cultural phenomenon accompanied by a specific historical development, corresponding to the keyword of the proposed topic, also having an important presence in the Biblical text.

How Effective is Microfinance on Poverty Reduction? Empirical Evidence on ACSI (Ethiopia)

Author(s): Bogale Berhanu Benti / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: microfinance; poverty reduction strategy; sustainability;

As per the World Bank report (2015), in 2000 Ethiopia had one of the highest poverty rates in the world, with 56 percent of the population living on less than (U.S.) $1.25 purchasing power parity (PPP) a day. According to International Fund Agricultural Development (2008), “Under the IFAD, initiated Rural Financial Intermediation Programme (RUFIP), impressive results have been achieved over the past five years in expanding outreach in the delivery of financial services by operationally sustainable microfinance institutions (MFIs) and RUSACCOs, with the clientele growing from about 700,000 to nearly 2 million poor rural households. The programme has demonstrated the potential of rural finance in enabling a large number of poor people to overcome poverty. Women account for about 30 per cent and 50 per cent of beneficiaries of MFIs and RUSACCOs respectively. However, much remains to be done, particularly in improving management information systems and expanding outreach to access-deficit and pastoral areas” Republic (2008). Based on the strategy of poverty eradication, microfinance institutions are playing significant role on the reduction of poverty and increase source of income by providing financial services, such as saving and credit to rural poor household society particularly poor women household. Therefore Amhara credit and saving institution (ACSI) has a significant effect on poverty alleviation and the institution stands for poor rural household and enable them to invest small sum of money in productive activity.

Interaction Effect of Dual N-back Working Memory Training and Anxiety Levels on L2 Writing Performance

Keywords: anxiety; dual N-back; interaction effect; second language writing; working memory;

Burgeoning interest in the role of working memory (WM) in most cognitive endeavors has led to an increase in WM training programs. Within the field second language (L2) writing, however, WM improvement interventions are scarce, and even scarcer is research into how other variables interact WM in their effect on performance. Hence, this study examines how anxiety, often believed to be a significant impediment for both WM and writing, moderates the effect of WM training on writing. Learners’ (N=80) writing performance was assessed before and after Dual N-back WM training. Writing anxiety levels were examined for any potential interaction with the intervention. Results from ANCOVA, Pearson’s correlation, and Two-Way ANOVA have revealed two things. First, writing anxiety is significantly correlated with writing performance. Second, the treatment group outperformed the control group even after controlling for both initial performance and anxiety levels. The findings indicate that there is a significant anxiety-treatment interaction effect on writing performance. Implications are discussed.

Although, in principle, any person can adopt and become an adoptive parent, regardless of their marital status (married or single), sex, race, nationality, etc., the Romanian legislation in this area establishes a series of requirements for this. For this purpose, the law on the legal regime of adoption stipulates that the persons or families wishing to adopt must fulfill the moral guarantees, as well as the material conditions necessary for the child’s raising, education and harmonious development. The fulfillment of the guarantees and conditions provided by law, as well as the existence of the parental skills, is certified by the general directorate of social assistance and child protection within the territorial area of which the adoptee or the adoptive family resides, by issuing a certificate following the evaluation performed according to the provisions of the adoption law. This study will analyze the requirements to be met by the persons or families wishing to adopt, namely: the age of the adopter, the full exercise capacity, the moral and material ability to adopt, the consent of the adopter and the consent of the adopter’s spouse.

Assessing Pure Water for the World’s Menstrual Hygiene Management Program in Honduran Schools

Keywords: menstrual hygiene; development; education; nonprofit; nutrition;

Pure Water for the World’s Menstrual Hygiene Management program aims at improving knowledge of menstrual health. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the MHM program in schools for menstruating girls, non-menstruating girls, boys, and teachers. Surveys and focus groups conducted in Trojes community schools have concluded that PWW’s MHM program has improved knowledge amongst teachers and menstruating girls. The knowledge of school-aged boys and non-menstruating girls though can still be improved. Of the 209 students surveyed, 49% reported that they had knowledge of the menstrual cycle and menstrual hygiene. Although issues such as response bias could have played a role in this large proportion of students without knowledge of menstruation, the number of students who benefited from the education and training has increased. It is recommended that the teachers use a pre-/post-test system to track the results of the MHM programs in their classrooms. By 6th grade, the students should be receiving lessons on menstruation, sexual health, puberty, and other topics amongst all genders. We recommend that PWW creates a partnership with an organization focused on nutrition to create a program in the schools geared towards menstruating girls, as study results indicate that this is an area of concern. PWW should work more closely with the Ministry of Health to ensure that the importance of menstrual hygiene and sexual health are relayed to the teachers as a way to de-stigmatize menstruation and empower teachers to provide accurate information.
