The cultural heritage of the Easter Frontiers of the Second Polish Republic

The cultural heritage of the Easter Frontiers of the Second Polish Republic

Dziedzictwo kulturowe Kresów Wschodnich Drugiej Rzeczypospolitej

Author(s): Barbara Kubis / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 3/2012

Keywords: Easter Frontiers; Second Polish Republic; heritage; culture

The author describes the problem of the cultural heritage of the Easter Frontiers. As lands that belonged to Poland for many centuries, they had become a part of the culture of the entire nation. Their loss turned out very harmful not only due to territorial reasons, but first and foremost due to the loss of the cultural ties with that region.

Sprawy narodowościowe w „Sprawach Narodowościowych”, 1992-2012. Nasi autorzy i ich publikacje

Author(s): Jacek Serwański / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 40/2012

Keywords: Nationalities Affairs; authors; contributions; bibliography 1992-2012

On the occasion of the 20 years’ anniversary of the academic journal Sprawy Narodowościowe (Nationalities Affairs) its origin and current situation have been presented in some detail. This bi-annual international and multidisciplinary journal was established in 1992 as a continuation of traditions of the prewar bi-monthly of the same title, which originally appeared in Warsaw in 1927-1939. It focuses on the study of nation, nationalisms and ethnicity, and is published under the auspices of the Polish Academy of Sciences, with the Institute for the Slavic Studies in Warsaw and Poznan as its editor. In the years between 1992 to 2012 a total number of ca. 550 articles, including 60 in English, as well as 170 book reviews was published, while the total number of printed pages reached 10,000. The contributors, in the number of 350, come mainly from Poland but also from abroad. Abstracts and pdf versions are available in the Internet. The text comprises a separate part including a full list of all the issues published over the 20 years’ period, as well as a full bibliography of all the contributions. Each entry contains a name of the author/co-author, title of the article, issue number and year of publication (a name of translator, if there is one).

Towards the Polish Nation-State. National Minorities in Poland Between 1945 and 1989

Towards the Polish Nation-State. National Minorities in Poland Between 1945 and 1989

Author(s): Sławomir Łodziński / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2012

Keywords: Poland; 1945-1989; national minorities; nation-building; ethnic exclusion

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effects of communist policies upon ethnic relations within a multinational state. I use the case of Poland in order to identify the general shifts and dynamics in nationalities polices in this country between 1945 and 1989. The study's main focus is the processes by which Polish society was ethnically homogenized. I subsequently discuss the successive ways of building the Polish nation-state, from one phase of the communist regime to another, and the national mythologisation of historical memory, especially in relation to World War II. The paper also draws attention to a phenomenon, often ignored by scholarly literature, which took place in postwar communist societies within minority ethnic groups. I am referring to the preservation of minorities’ identities in the form of “a hidden ethnicity” in the context of group exclusion from the public sphere and of the disenfranchisement of specific ethnic historical memories within the wider societal narratives.

Keywords: Church Archives; Libraries and Museums; semi-annual journal; Rev. Stanisław Librowski; the Institute of Church Archives; Libraries and Museums; bibliography; the contents of the journal

The journal “Archiwa Biblioteki i Muzea Kościelne” was established in 1959 as a magazine of the Institute of Church Archives, Libraries and Museums. At first it was a quarterly to the number 4, and then it turned into a semi-annual magazine. The founder and the first editor-in-chief was Rev. Professor Stanislaw Librowski. He divided the journal into several thematic sections referring to: the Institute of Church Archives, Libraries and Museums; magazines; archives; libraries; museums; auxiliary sciences; hagiography; biographical materials and a variety of issues. In the 1990s, along with the successive editors the structure of the journal was changed. From volume 73 (200) the periodical contains the following topics: symposia, studies and materials, reviews and news, a bibliographic review. Since the bibliography includes the articles that appeared in the issues of the journal before the establishment of the current structure, they were assigned to the currently existing sections.

War Fates of Polish Families Resettled from Their Homeland in 1944-1946

Vojnové osudy poľských rodín vysídlených z rodnej zeme v rokoch 1944 - 1946

Author(s): Barbara Kubis / Language(s): Slovak / Issue: 1/2009

Keywords: World War II; post-war society; Poland; family; resettlement; migration; memoirs;

The Second World War had a damaging impact upon many Polish families. As a result of the decision carried out by the Allies, the Poles settled in the territory of the Second Polish Republic (Rzeczpospolita II) were forced to leave their homes. The tragic circumstances related to their expulsion, the difficult journey to other lands and conditions under which they were rebuilding their existence in a new, unknown land, were described in diaries and memoirs. In this paper the writer subjects these texts to a detailed analysis. The authors of the memoirs wanted to prevent their traditions and memories from falling into oblivion or getting lost in the past. The War forced over one million of Poles to leave Kresy (the eastern frontiers of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth). They moved mainly to the areas east of the Oder River (Odra) and the Lusatian Neisse River (Nysa Łużycka) – the territories handed over by Germany to Poland. This is where they started their new, post-war existence, facing the challenges of a new political system forced upon them by the Soviets. The work needed to rebuild what the war had destroyed required extraordinary efforts and sacrifice.

Author(s): Katarzyna Joanna Tomkowiak / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2018

Keywords: the Załuski Library; Delegation of Poland in the Special Joint Commission; Municipal Library under the name of Nicolaus Copernicus in Toruń; Moscow; St. Petersburg; Russian Public Library in St. Peter

Aim: The subject of the article is to describe the activities of Zygmunt Mocarski during works the aim of which was to bring back the Polish library collections from Russia, pursuant to the provisions of the Riga Treaty of 18 March 1921. He worked as a temporary library expert and helped considerably in the revindication actions of the Polish Delegation in the Joint Special Commission in Moscow and Petrograd from 13 September 1922 to the end of April 1923. Research method: The analysis of documents from Polish institutions, printed materials and review of literature. Results/Conclusions: Zygmunt Mocarski, on the basis of Chapter 9 of the Treaty of Riga, significantly contributed to the recovery of Polish incunabula and old prints that had been kept in Russia since the time of the partitions. The majority of Polish unique prints were stored in the famous former Imperial Library in St. Petersburg (the Russian Public Library). Mocarski had a significant knowledge concerning the collections of this library, his excellent command of Russian being of great help here. I showed that he was a valued member of this group. It was thanks to his involvement that the prints from the Załuski Library were recovered.

„Charytatywni siewcy ideologii nienawiści i odwetu.” Proces członków organizacji Kirchendienst Ost jako element propagandowej walki PRL z rewizjonizmem zachodnioniemieckim

Author(s): Dorota Kurek / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 2/2022

Keywords: West German revisionism; show trial; Kirchendienst Ost; propaganda in Polish People’s Republic; German minority

The paper presents the show trial of two members of German minority – Germans who remained in West Pomerania after 1945 – who collaborated with German Evangelical charity organization, Kirchendienst Ost. These events are present primarily as a perfect media propaganda spectacle, crowning the battle that Polish People’s Republic waged against the so-called West German revisionism. The trial, which took place in Szczecin in 1968, was also a milestone in the history of German minority who remained on theso-called Recovered Territories (Ziemie Odzyskane) and showed in essence the complicated situation of this group. Therefore, the author outlined not only the mechanisms of propaganda aimed against “West German revisionism”, but also the living conditions of Germans who remained in West Pomerania and other former German lands, and were members of “no Polish” Evangelical communities. The changes in the legal situation of this minority over the course of time and impact of these changes on both material living conditions and issues related to following religious observances have been discussed. When describing the show trial, the author focused on the mechanisms of action of propaganda in Polish People’s Republic, and on methods of deliberate, planned control over the mass media and influencing the public opinion in order to trigger desired emotions, convictions and attitudes. In light of this the presented show trial appears as an example of a media show prepared in great detail with the aim to convince the Poles of hostile intentions of West Germany against their country, and thereby support and strengthen the communist power in Poland.
