Design can be described as the efforts during the process of transforming some images created in the mind into real and original products within certain restrictions brought by the existent problem and the scope of certain criteria. In order for these expeditions and experiments to result in success the designer has to take advantage of his previous experience and knowledge. To achieve this, designer has to be qualified in universities about visual and functional aesthetic, technical proficiency, ergonomic, production. Graduates will actualize their designs regarding ethic and moral attitudes with their knowledge. They will convert their inner worlds into forms in different contexts. Design education is obligatory for individuals to think, make definitions and connections, put their knowledge and skills into use in a developing world and to work in an ever changing environment. First step of design education, basic design course, is considered significant concerning the definition of quality in design education. In the scope of this study, design and its process are defined, and basic design education is studied with the topics of the aim, changes of its education throughout the process and the role of communication. To improve quality; role of concept, methods of conceptual learning is discussed together with current methods. The contributions of conceptual learning to basic design are questioned.

A DESIGN FOR THE EVALUATION IN PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION

The assessment of public policies is a step rousing interest both by comparison to the entire cycle of public policies, and related to the implementation of policies, especially seeing that the two steps were separately described in the specialty literature due to their specificity. The assessment assumes various actors, specific steps and sub-steps; it uses its own techniques, methods and tools. This specific framework of the assessment process will be followed at the level of this article and will be generically named the design of the assessment process. The design of assessment tries to define assessment related to the existence of assessment, its targets and functions, actors, steps and typologies. This study proposes to find the specificity elements of assessment and to outline what they have previously defined as being an evaluative design specific to local administration which can lead to good public policies as long as there is no assessment recipe.

EXPERIENCES ON TEACHING QUESTIONNAIRE DESIGN

In this article an experiment on teaching questionnaire design is presented. The questionnaires made by 67 first year students were analyzed in order to find the most common design mistakes. After students have analyzed the gathered data, they were asked to evaluate their questionnaire in the view of the obtained results and draw some conclusions about what they should have done differently. It turn out, that they have learnt more from experiencing the difficulties coming from the bad question design, than from the presented questionnaire design principles.

THE THEORETICAL UNDERPINNINGS OF A LEARNING DESIGN PROJECT

In the “Implementing Effective Learning Designs” project a framework and design guidelines were created to provide a comprehensive scaffold to assist academics in the development of inspiring learning design examples and supportive activities. Learning design templates were developed that can be used by academic staff to tailor exemplary examples to meet particular requirements, whilst providing them with the underlying pedagogical principals involved in the learning design. The implementation of learning designs was also explored and barriers identified to their widespread adoption and ways of overcoming these. This paper outlines the theoretical underpinnings that supported the project.

NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN TEXTILE DESIGN EDUCATION

Important changes are anticipated as digital technologies impact the traditional world of education. Textile design education meets the requirements of the textile industry and brings the student closer to experimenting with new technologies. There is not an area of our world unaffected by the advances in textile research. Principles of textile science and technology merge with other research fields such as engineering, chemistry, biotechnology and information science. This paper follows a set of pro/con arguments for the use of new technologies/software in textile design education. The present paper does not emphasize the contrast between old and new solutions but rather challenges the degree of adaptation of new technologies both to the requirements of the industry, for a sustainable future and the need to develop the creativity of new generation of designers. To exemplify the arguments we turn to our teaching and research activity. Working with students to design projects for a new generation of digital textile printers led us to conclusions that aim to establish the relevance of these technologies in textile design education. In teaching textile design we often combine modern techniques of printing and weaving with ancient methods and emphasize the wide array of environmental friendly techniques. The experience gained in textile design education and the use of new digital printing technologies/software in particular determined us to change our view over the possibilities the field offered until not too long ago. Textile design is the research field that could reach at an industrial scale the standards for a sustainable future.

The rhythm of technological progress and innovation is noticeably accelerating during the last few decades, in spite of temporary periods of stagnation or crises. As for any branch of human creative activity, strongly associated with technology, this fact also presents a permanent challenge for the field of contemporary design, with regard to its goals, methods, achievements, past and future. One of the main problems of design consists in synchronizing itself with this outstandingly dynamic technological progress and in harmonizing technology with our human needs and changing environment, as well as in creatively contributing to it. One of the most important tasks of design lies in rendering this especially complex and rapidly changing field intelligible and livable for everyday people. Accordingly, the synthetic function of design also means transitivity, interaction and communication in practice.

DESIGN AS AN INTEGRAL ELEMENT OF PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

Considering the very wide range of areas in which the design is present (industrial products, architecture, furniture, fashion, textile, web design, graphic design, etc.) a great importance of design is also expressed, which is always interpreted in the context of some specific application areas. In the innovation and design of special interest is the definition and the role of design in the innovation process, i.e., creation, or more precisely, design objects for everyday use, especially those that are produced in large batches, so industrial. The design can be viewed as a new multidisciplinary activity, that relies not just on science but largely, if not predominantly, on the creativity and art. Thus, one of the instruments for realization of new needs, and therefore profits, is design. The development of design and its increasing importance is economically conditioned, so the basic demand with which the design is facing today is actually the money. This paper is an attempt to emphasize the importance of design as a component of the process of product innovation, because compared to competing products it represents an element of differentiation and an important source for obtaining and maintaining the market advantage.

Registration of an industrial design – principle of specialty

The subject of the article is the principle of specialty which, in the Polish legal system, limits the scope of protection of the industrial design. In fact, the scope of protection of the industrial design in the Polish law is much narrower than the protection under the provisions of the Directive 98/71. In consequence, an increasing number of Polish applications in OHIM results from the principle of specialty and higher charges related to the protection of the industrial design.

Design Thinking as a Source of Management Innovation

The paper attempts to present design thinking as an approach which, when applied in management, can transform the mode of operation adopted in an organisation effectively enough to become in effect a source of radical changes and management innovation itself. Management innovation, though not so rare in management practice, has not become widespread in scientific literature, and is often wrongly identified with organisational innovation. It includes everything which significantly changes the manner of implementing management functions. It is very important to contemporary organisations, since by radically changing management methods, it is able to sustain an innovative potential in the long run. Research aims. The aim of this paper is to identify these advantages of the design thinking approach which, when used in contemporary organisations, may be an efficient support in the creation and implementation of management innovation. Methodology. The discussion undertaken in the paper is theoretical and primarily based on the method of the analysis and criticism of literature on design thinking and management, and management innovation in particular. The research method used to solve the scientific problem is deduction, which referred to the critical literature study has allowed achieving the research goal. Key findings. The analysis of theoretical findings resulted in drawing how design thinking approach may effectively support the creation of management innovation in contemporary organizations. Although design thinking comes from a designers’ job, at present it is an approach to creative and innovative ways of solving open, complex, and unambiguous management problems in numerous organisations.

The current approaches to the organization and management are not sufficient to fully describe and explain the nature of and processes underlying social innovations. Being understood as new ideas working to respond unmet social problems and needs to essentially improve people’s lives, they involve changing patterns of social practices, relationships and interactions. They are at the same time the cause and the most important means of the social change. Thus, the main goal of this paper is to present, describe and analyze a design-led approach to social innovation. It is relatively new approach, which derives from design sciences and is understood both as a science and practice within organization and management sciences. It delivers a new scientific framework for the description, explanation and design of social innovation processes and their results.

Business organizations are constantly looking for new managerial techniques and tools, to satisfy customer needs for new products, processes and services. Customer satisfaction is in the focus of contemporary organizations because of its great importance for performance and shareholder value creation. Design thinking has been recognized as innovative management method for product innovation and process or service improvement. In contemporary business organizations, design thinking is increasingly gaining importance because, on the one hand, it is directed towards customer; while at the same time it is managing multidimensional problems. As a new innovative management method, design thinking concept was created by studying the work of successful designers and applying their best practices into business world. Today, it is used in processes of innovation management, product development, and the improvement of customer relationship management. As design thinking is still a relatively new and insufficiently researched management method, the aim of this paper is to explore its role and development in contemporary business practice. In addition, in this paper we will describe the tools and techniques that are used in the process of design thinking. This study will contribute to entrepreneurs and managers in terms of understanding the design thinking concept, along with the possibilities of its application in business practice in order to improve performances and increase shareholder value.

Crisis socioeconomic developments our country has been facing lately gave rise a to brand new approach to managing social problems embodied in social design. Social design as a technology of social management has been taking ever more significant place in the development of the Ukrainian society. It has been a while since social design proved to have a significant impact in the developed countries, which extensively design and implement social projects. Social design as it is today should be considered as a social practice phenomenon of the globalized society. Research of social design as a functional, applied management methodology and technology is also important for the development of practical principles of social management and social security. This research is aimed to improve and further develop theoretical provisions and practical recommendations as to the use of social design as a technology of social management in the development of Ukrainian society. The object of this study is the process of use of social design as a technology of social management when addressing social problems of society. The subject of the study is theoretical and applied aspects of social design as a social management technology. The paper analyzes and generalizes the conceptual framework of social design; defines the role and function of social design as a technology of social management, offers a functional block diagram of social design (it details the object, the subject, the base principles, social design tools), substantiates the stages of social design.

APPROACHES IN DESIGN EDUCATION: THE ROLE OF PATTERNS AND SCENARIOS IN THE DESIGN STUDIO

The studio is the educational setting where architectural students dedicate a large part of their study career working individually and in groups. Supporting students with adequate methods to deal with ill-defined problems in the design studio is a major challenge for design education. Whereas different approaches such as using design patterns and developing scenarios are reported to improve the design activity, they were never investigated in the design studio. An empirical investigation was conducted in order to explore whether and how scenarios and patterns can help students in developing a useful knowledge base and enhance their abilities to solve design problems in the design studio. Students were requested to solve a series of design problems using these educational methods, while working individually and as a team. They were asked to produce as many design ideas as possible, while in the team setting were instructed to think aloud. The data assessed is gathered from surveys, problem solving sessions, and interviews. Thus, qualitative and quantitative analyses had to be done to find out about the different impact of the two methods in design. The results showed that as an educational approach, patterns aided in defining problems and analyzing idea solutions, mainly from a technical and functional perspective. Scenarios, on the other hand, were helpful to generate new ideas, and to enhance design creativity. Independently of the pedagogical method used in the design studio, working in teams showed to be central to enrich and enhance many aspects of the design activity. The findings have important implications for intervention programs in the design studio.

THE COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF DESIGN RIGHT AND COPYRIGHT

A large variety of market relations are regulated by intellectual property rights, which represent legitimate monopolies correcting certain inefficiencies of a profit distribution on the market. In the following paper, the author examines the relations between design right and copyright using the comparative method. Firstly the author will analyze both resemblances and diﬀerences between these two intellectual property rights. The resemblance in protection object in particular makes available the cumulation of protected rights, in other words, the possibility of protecting industrial design by copyright, which will also be analyzed in the paper. Such work aims to comprehend the hybrid nature of design right as a right usually bypassed in a legal theory, and which is, in the author’s opinion, especially interesting.

We presented in this paper, two different and complex examples that are based on a highly intensive research work. In the first case it is about combining useful technology and local tradition, and the second example shows a client who is extremely interested in the appearance of its products and passing on small objects to a large building on which he manifest a great interest concerning technological details. In order to observe in detail whether technology is a real solution and to which extent, we researched two examples of human developments which tries in a different way to use concepts of sustainability and resource regeneration. (1) Masbar is a technological achievement of highest level, in a country that can make considerable investments in research and professionals, an example of how human chooses to isolate himself of the natural environment and he relates with the environment strictly on efficiency bases, orientation and energy capture. (2) Since the announcement made by Steve Jobs that architectural firm Foster and Partners will design headquarters Apple in Cupertino, California, it the intent to promote a unique building with a great symbolic value was more than evident. All the design elements have become extremely visible through special promotion (Apple’s trademark) to create an overview of sustainable development.

The rapid development of technology in today’s times make business’ survival a rather complex task. It is therefore necessary for the specialized organization and administration of each company to differentiate and strengthen its competitive advantages. Gamification is an established practice in many business domains and can enforce employees to engage in business processes and change aspects of their behavior. Even though numerous gamification patterns that are described in literature have been used so far by businesses to various working environments, the outcomes were not the best possible that we would expect in terms of their right utilization to business non-game contexts. Thus, there is need for concise gamification patterns that can offer right guidance to game designers in business. Gamification design patterns can provide a distilled knowledge of techniques of how to design object-oriented software. This paper aims to address this gap in existing literature by describing new gamification design patterns, classifying them according to specific criteria and providing new information to this research domain. Our study is a descriptive literature review and is based on review of previous works. This descriptive literature review tries to give a better understanding by proposing new gamification design patterns in the continuously evolving research domain of gamification design patterns.

În pofida faptului că în ultimii trei ani, societatea a trecut prin nenumărate evenimente negative, dacă alegem să căutăm partea pozitivă a acestor evenimente, putem observa amploarea pe care conceptul de wellbeing a avut- o și încă o are în domeniul designului ambiental. Acești ultimi trei ani au generat noi necesități pentru ființa umană, designul ambiental, prin însuși definiția sa, dezvoltând noi soluții, bazate pe noile nevoi și pe importanța pe care spațiului rezidențial o manifestă asupra sănătății noastre psihice și, implicit, asupra celei fizice.Despite the fact that in the last three years, the society has gone through countless negative events, if we choose to look for the positive side of these events, we can see the extent that the wellbeing concept had and still has in the field of interior design. These last three years have generated new needs for the human being, interior design, by its very definition, developing new solutions, based on the new needs and the importance that the residential space manifests on mental and, implicitly, physical health.
