Power and Sandwiched Sovereignty: Nepali Migrant Workers in the Gulf Countries

Author(s): Hari KC / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Gulf Countries; migration; Nepal; Nepali migrant workers;

Nepal is relatively a new entrant to global labour markets. Nevertheless, over the past few decades, a huge portion of its population has migrated abroad for employment, changing the image of Nepal from a country of “global warriors to global workers” (Rajauriya, 2015). In particular, the political change of 1990 that ushered Nepal into a multiparty democracy triggered the globalizing processes. Unlike during the King’s regime, obtaining passports became easier even for general people, affording them more agility and freedom to travel outside the country (Tiwari & Bhattarai, 2011). Further, the government formed after the 1992 elections embraced a policy of fast-paced economic liberalization, connecting Nepal with global economy and global labour markets (Labour Migration for Employment Report: 2014).

Keywords: migration; refugee crisis; Germany; modernisation; restriction; pragmatic liberalisation;

In 2015 and 2016, Germany faced an influx of asylum seekers on an unprecedented scale. How did the country react to this so-called “refugee crisis”? The response was a major effort at all levels of the federal state: the federal level, the Länder, the local authorities, but also civil society, welfare associations and NGOs. There have been countless measures in the most diverse fields of action (Grote, 2018). This article will specifically deal with the question of how and which legislative and administrative changes were put in place at the federal level in order to better manage the changing influx.

The crisis as a normal state — about the normalisation of something unacceptable Research project (outline and first outcomes)

Kryzys jako stan normalny — o normalizacji rzeczy nie do przyjęcia Zarys projektu badawczego

Author(s): Annette Siemes / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

The article presents an outline of a research project concerning the normalisation of a state of crisis in media communication as well as in communication in general — the last understood as a process of negotiation of meaning that forms the basis for social‑communicational reality. The concept of normalism as well as research on normalisation procedures in communication constitute the theoretical background of the project. On their basis the text gives an outline of the research plan and an overwiew on the first research categories resulting from an initial analysis of empiric material (news concerning the Climate Change Conference in Bonn, COP23, in 2017).

Rhetorical Styles in Presenting Scientific Research

Rhetorical Styles in Presenting Scientific Research

Retoryczne style przedstawiania wiedzy naukowej

Author(s): Maria Załęska / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: rhetoric;style;metalanguage;academic discourse;popularization

The paper applies rhetorical framework of three styles (genera dicendi) to highlight some of the communicative practices within the academic discourse. By using persuasive resources of the low style, the authors focus on the rhetorical goal of docere/probare, i.e. to teach/to prove. Ascetic sobriety of the low style suggests no stylization to the readers, which further implies that the content mirrors reality without any rhetorical mediation. In opting for the persuasive resources of the medium style, researchers combine epistemic and aesthetic goals – trying to achieve the rhetorical aim of delectare, i.e. to delight. This intriguing style attracts reader’s attention to the intellectual complexities of the academic text. The high style suits best rhetorical goal of movere, i.e. to move, to ‘call to action’. It presents scientific research as a useful resource and it helps readers while making decisions; hence it is likely to be used by engaged scholars and public intellectuals.

THE FUTURE OF RETIREMENT: RETIREMENT LITERACY AND FINANCIAL BEHAVIOR OF TEACHERS POPULATION IN THE SLAVONIA REGION

Author(s): Verica Jovanovski / Language(s): English / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: pension literacy; financial literacy; retirement planning; teachers;

For today’s workers, the process of aging will differ from previous generations. Social contracts among governments, employers, and individuals are central to retirement systems around the world. Today, throughout their lifetime, individuals are more responsible for their finances than ever before. Financial markets are rapidly changing with developments in technology and new and more complex financial products. Skills are becoming more critical and it is important to understand whether people are equipped to effectively navigate the maze of financial decisions that they face every day. Generous defined social security benefit pension plans are diminishing, as life expectancy and the need for self-funded retirement savings are increasing. In this paper, the author presents the results of the research conducted in the region of Slavonia related to retirement literacy and understanding of the financial behavior of the population of teachers that work in schools. The questionnaire was based on the Big Three financial and retirement literacy measurement and The Aegon Retirement Readiness Survey. The goal of the research is to compare the results to similar research studies and to find out financial understanding and the need for organizing retirement literacy education for teachers’ population in the region of Slavonia.

Keywords: Adult; assessment; Fluency Shaping; Holistic approach; stuttering; Stuttering Modification;treatment;

There are different treatments accessible for people who stutter. They vary from direct interventions to those targeting to relieve the anxiety and other issues that can accompany the disorder. This paper focuses on two different approaches implemented by the author in her clinical practice with one particular client: fluency shaping and stuttering modification. Understanding those approaches and the continuum that lies between them can lead to a holistic view of the person who stutters. In the first part of this paper, the principles underlying both approaches will be reported and compared, and their strengths and weaknesses will be identified. In the second part, the author will share her personal experience and reflection regarding the design of an individualized treatment, tailored to the needs of the person who stutters.

Fibula as Insignia in a Western-European Costume

Фибула как инсигния в западноевропейском костюме

Author(s): Natalia V. Zhilina / Language(s): Russian / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: Western Europe; Byzantium; fibula; insignia; function; brooch;decorativeness;

In Byzantium, brooches lost the meaning of insignia because of other regalia in development and of a rational design of clothing. But in Western Europe, the status role of large fibula remained during the developed Middle Ages. This is evidenced by all kinds of sources: written, graphic, material. Large, expensive, luxuriously ornamented brooches had the value of insignia.In preserving of the role of central brooches as status ones, one can see the striking feature of the ceremonial dress of the rulers and the higher social stratum of Western Europe. But here the brooches shared the fate of this jewelry category: they transit from the function of fastening to the decorative role and transmit their decorative form to large buttons.

Innovations in contemporary early‑school education (based on the analysis of selected programmes of integrated teaching)

Innowacje we współczesnej edukacji wczesnoszkolnej (na podstawie analizy wybranych programów kształcenia zintegrowanego)

Author(s): Elżbieta Marek / Language(s): Polish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: early‑school education; innovations;integrated teaching programmes;

Innovations are indispensable in the pedagogical progress. They can pertain to the schooling system, teachers’ work, various forms of pupils’ activity, purposes, teaching contents, and conditions of education. In recent years, one could witness a lot of innovative programmes of integrated teaching. Thirteen of them have been analysed, and the research results are presented in this article. The main research problem was to answer the following question: What innovative solutions are suggested by their authors? The conducted research indicates that the programmes embrace various aspects of innovations. In the area of teaching contents, there is a tendency to ascribe the dominant role to mathematical, scientific, and social education, as well as teaching foreign languages and entrepreneurship. In all of the programmes under analysis the use of new technologies is suggested, including e‑learning platforms containing a variety of didactic resources for both pupils and teachers. What is preferred in the process of education is the pupils’ research attitude through the application of heuristic methods, including project method and the use of constructivism as a dominant theory of learning. Most programmes suggest learning assessment. The innovations propagated in the programmes favour the human being’s innovative education for which the newest surrounding constitutes the set of inquiries and areas of cognitive and practical uncertainty.

The motivational mechanisms of lexical formation and creation as a manifestation of linguistic processing and its application to the learning of the lexis in Spanish as a foreign Language

Los mecanismos motivacionales de formación y creación léxica como manifestación de procesamiento lingüístico y su aplicación al aprendizaje del léxico en español/LE

Author(s): María del Carmen García Manga / Language(s): Spanish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: lexical competence; linguistic processing; Spanish as a Foreign Language;lexical creation;

The research from a cognitive perspective of the processes of comprehension; production and storage of lexicon; to which we can get from the analysis; among others; of creative motivational processes such as etymologization or word formation; is essential to achieve not only an adequate knowledge about the functioning of our communicative processes; but also to implement improvements in such tangible aspects as the teaching-learning of Spanish as a foreign language.The lexical competence is now; in many methodological proposals; the access route for the learning of languages. Within it; the lexical creation; where we emphasize lexical morphology and etymologization as manifestations of linguistic motivation; can become a great ally to achieve meaningful learning. An approach to the processes of integration of the new units in the lexical organization of the native can offer effective tools in the design of didactic actions that seek to produce the same effects in the acquisition of lexical competence by foreign students.

The evaluation and the qualification of written expression and reading comprehension in academic context

La evaluación y la calificación de la expresión escrita y de la comprensión lectora en contexto académico

Author(s): Raúl Fernández Jódar,Joanna Fernández / Language(s): Spanish / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: writing; written expression; reading; reading comprehension; evaluation;qualification;

The present paper presents the different criteria that we must adopt to obtain a precise evaluation and qualification in academic context. Usually in current teaching methods more importance is given to oral language on writing, since it is considered more profitable from the communication point of view. However, being communicatively competent in a language also means being able to deal with texts written in that language. Texts that correspond to different situations and social contexts, and which must be mastered. On the other hand, the ELE teacher should not only teach how to understand and produce written texts, but should also evaluate and qualify them according to clear criteria. We must bear in mind that with evaluation we refer to the observation and description of the progress of a student’s learning, and with qualification we refer to the attribution a generally numerical value to the performance of a learner.

The Supernatural in Thomas Ligotti’s Fiction: This Absolute Darkness Behind the Appearance of Things

Le surnaturel dans l’oeuvre de Thomas Ligotti: Cette absolue ténèbre derrière la semblance des choses

Author(s): Denis Moreau / Language(s): French / Publication Year: 0

Keywords: supernatural; fantastic literature; darkness; ontological loneliness; selfreflection; metafiction; metalepsis; Thomas Ligotti;

The weird fiction of Thomas Ligotti uses a variety of images and subjects within a thematic unit focused on the presence of a shadowy and malevolent force, an unintelligible darkness hidden beneath the surface of the sensible world. In the philosophical thought of Ligotti’s fiction, inherited from Arthur Schopenhauer and Peter Wessel Zapffe, the supernatural appears as a base for ontological questions about the limits of the knowable, the meaning of the world and the humankind’s place and role in the universe. This question of humankind’s relation to the rest of the universe induces a primal and epistemic anguish. The supernatural takes here the form of an absolute blackness, as an embodiment of the epitome of the unknown and its impact upon the human psyche.The world, deprived of transcendence and finality, is not the way it appears, and becomes a grotesque chaos of fear, nonsense and epistemological isolation. On the other hand, this epistemological problematic is coupled with elements of metafictional self-reflection and different metaleptic layers, with the aim of illustrating the theme of illusion and reality and the permeability between the fictional and the real.
