The Late Antique town of unknown name near the modern day town ofByala, Region of Varna, Bulgaria was established in the late 4th or in the early 5th c. andwas occupied continuously until the beginning of the 7th c. AD. It is situated on CapeSveti Atanas, where the regular archaeological excavation, conducted by the authors overa decade, helped to reveal a large part of an unknown so far Late Antique/Early Byzantinefortified port town. During the excavation in - and around the town, evidences for artisanal activities of various kind have been found, which continued over two centuries:through the two periods of town occupation. Most of the activities were carried on withinthe town. One of the widely attested crafts was the production of various forms ofhousehold pottery and less of fine ware, oil lamps, lids and construction ceramics. Thekilns and a number of isolated finds connected to the pottery production are dated in the5th c. AD and mostly in the 6th c. AD.

This article presents the votive terracottas from a late archaic / early classical find context that was discovered in 2009 in the Kurupelit district of Atakum, a suburb of Samsun, during a rescue excavation and so far only published in excavation reports. On the basis of the published reports, the attempt is made to classify these votive terracottas typologically, iconographically and chronologically and finally to interpret them in the context of their find. They all show the type repertoire as well as the technical and stylistic peculiarities of the terracottas of the Ionic koiné. They came to light in a Bothros together with Ionic and Attic vases, especially kylikes, some of which bear graffiti of dedication to the goddess Kybebos. The finds of this Bothro are spread over a period between the last quarter of the 6th century. and second quarter of the 5th century BC. This complex is the earliest archaeological evidence of the Milesian founding of Amisos.

The discovery of 10th century metal art centres in the vicinity of the capital of Preslav, i.e. near the villages of Novosel, municipality of Shumen and Zlatar, municipality of Preslav, opened a new trend in the medieval Bulgarian archaeology. The production center at Novosel is spread over an area of 170 acres and has been operating with great intensity in the first half of 10th century. At the same time, Zlatar center was smaller in size and occupied an area of 40 acres. Both centers are designed and specialized in casting non-ferrous metals and manufacturing fine metalwork. The main activity of the centers around Preslav is metalworking. There is no melted ore here, so there are no remains of melting furnaces, from the ore itself and the accompanying similar metallurgical activity waste production. A third center of metal art in the vicinity of Nadarevo, municipality of Targovishte, is not yet systematically studied. The investigations made on Novosel and Zlatar sites helped clarifying some controversial issues connected with the place and role of a large number of metal items found by archaeologists or donated to museums in the past two decades.

CROATIAN PUPILS' PERSPECTIVES ON REMOTE TEACHING AND LEARNING DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

On March 16th 2020, the Croatian government mandated a nationwide closure of schools and introduced remote teaching and learning in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The present study explores the perspectives of pupils in the 7th grade of elementary education regarding this period of remote teaching and learning. The study aims to examine the level and determinants of pupils' satisfaction with newly implemented practices and to explore their perception of remote teaching and learning in comparison to classroom practices. An online survey was conducted with 920 pupils from 23 elementary schools in Zagreb between May 25th and June 6th 2020. The results indicate average satisfaction levels and a weak ability of the model to predict pupils' satisfaction based on a set of individual pupil characteristics. Pupils' interest in using digital devices and fathers' educational status were the only significant predictors of satisfaction. On average, pupils perceived remote teaching and learning as unfavourable in terms of quality, task load and effort in comparison to classroom practices. There was, however, a small cluster of pupils (15%) who associated remote teaching and learning with higher-quality practices.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been varied responses to public health officials' recommendations about wearing face masks as a means to slow the spread of the virus. This study, by using Twitter data, aims to explore the role of digital technology in facilitating public conversations and formulating public perception regarding face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic in two contrasting contexts: the U.S. and South Korea. From January 1, 2020 to April 14, 2020, a total of 22,928 users generated 27,501 tweets regarding face masks in the U.S. network, whereas 17,267 users produced 18,686 tweets in that of South Korea. The results of the semantic network analysis shed light on Americans' initial resistance to wearing masks as well as Koreans' willingness to comply. Details of the results are discussed further in the paper. With real-time data aggregation, this study gives insight into the rising controversy regarding wearing face masks during COVID-19 while providing implications for health officials designing strategic communication messages.

This study aims to explore the associations between descriptive normative beliefs (DNB), alcohol use and negative consequences and test whether self-regulation (SR) moderates this relationship. The data was collected online from 1621 first-year university students in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania and Slovakia. The AUDIT, self-regulation questionnaire and questions regarding DNB were used. DNB were found to be positively associated with drinking across all the samples. The associations between DNB and alcohol use as well as between alcohol use and negative consequences were stronger among students with lower SR. The protective effect of SR on alcohol use and consequences combined with the theory of social influence may improve intervention accuracy and make it a promising target for intervention among young adults.

Drawing on the escape theory, we propose that emotional intelligence is negatively linked to materialism and compulsive buying. Our research demonstrates that the ability to manage one's emotions is associated with lower levels of materialism and compulsive buying. We also show that materialism functions as the mechanism underlying the emotional intelligence – compulsive buying relationship. Similarly, the ability to understand one's emotions was found to be negatively related to compulsive buying. Contrary to expectations, the path between the understanding of one's emotions and materialism was found to be non-significant, suggesting that the link between emotional intelligence and materialism might not always be direct. As expected, materialism was positively linked to compulsive buying. Our research contributes to the relevant literature with a new antecedent of materialism, namely emotional intelligence.

The aim of this research was to examine the mediating role of teacher–pupil interaction in the relationship of temperament to self-esteem and school success among year-7 and year-8 elementary-school pupils in Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina (B&H). The assumptions on the contribution of the dimensions of temperament (self-control and negative affectivity) and teacher–pupil interaction (influence and proximity) in explaining pupils' self-esteem and school success were partially confirmed. Similar relationships among the measured variables were confirmed in both samples of pupils. Self-control, negative affectivity, and teacher proximity directly predicted self-esteem, while self-control indirectly predicted self-esteem through teacher proximity. Self-control and teacher proximity contributed directly to school success, and the indirect contribution of self-control to school success through teacher proximity was also significant. The results of this research indicate the importance of the direct contribution of children's temperaments to their self-esteem and school success, and of its indirect contribution through the quality of the interaction with their teacher.

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in the form of a reduction in the own revenue of local government units and the corresponding reduction in their expenditure, including asset expenditure, were the determining factor for the introduction of extraordinary and temporary mechanisms to minimise this negative phenomenon from 2020. One of such solutions is the Government Fund for Local Investments, separated within the state special-purpose fund – the COVID-19 Counteracting Fund. The aim of this study is to establish the legal status of the Government Fund for Local Investments (Rządowy Fundusz Inwestycji Lokalnych – RFIL). The hypothesis about the temporary nature of this fund and its close relations with the COVID-19 Counteracting Fund has been verified as being true. It has been established that the RFIL does not have its own sources of revenue, and its financial resources are the result of separating a certain amount of funds accumulated in the account of the COVID-19 Counteracting Fund, which means it is, in fact, its sub-fund with clearly defined tasks to be performed. The RFIL-provided support is non-returnable, and its only beneficiaries are local government units. The resources transferred from this fund may only be used for the implementation of investment projects or for meeting asset expenses. The study uses the legal-dogmatic method and, additionally, the statistical analytical method, to present specific numerical values reflecting the importance of the RFIL support in relation to the own revenue of local government units.

This work evaluated the effect of entity characteristics on company social responsibility costs of oil and gas firms in Nigeria for 2010 - 2019. The independent variables of the study and measures of firm characteristics are total assets, total sales, financial leverage and firm age while the independent variable is corporate social responsibility. A sample of three firms was selected out of a population of eleven oil and gas businesses on the Nigeria Stock Exchange during the period. Supporting data were obtained from the selected firms and analyzed using multiple regression analysis. Findings from the analysis suggest that both total assets and total sales positively and significantly affect the corporate social responsibility costs of the firms. It was also found that financial leverage positively and insignificantly affects the corporate social responsibility costs of the firms. Finding further reveals that firm age negatively and insignificantly affects corporate social responsibility costs of the firms. In the light of the findings, it was recommended that the firm managers should invest in assets especially long-term assets that will yield future streams of returns for their firms. This is because investment in assets improves production and promotes the corporate social responsibility performance of the firms. It was also recommended that the firm managers should promote their products through various product promotion channels as total sales boast firm profitability and promote corporate social responsibility performance. It was further recommended that the firm managers should increase the proportion of debts in their firms' capital structure. It was finally recommended that firm managers should use a modern approach while implementing their corporate social responsibility programs as opposed to the old style.

This paper fits into the ex-post migration crisis of 2015-16 dialogue and offers added value through its complex transboundary perspective while bringing in the national perspective of a transboundary crisis. After the largest migration flow, lacking supranational coordination and governance, Slovenia’s coping strategy was oriented towards logistical mechanisms to keep up the pressure and move the flow forward. Given the scale of the crisis, such a setting lacked a rapid response at the local level, and the high dimensionality and nonlinear interactions caused pink noise. Using a case study method, the paper argues that crisis management moved backwards and had a decoupled structure. It also calls for a more inclusive multi-level crisis management structure and investment in existing international organizations. Indeed, if the crisis interactions had taken place globally, the crisis would be less dimensional and more linear, thus avoiding pink noise.

"Second curve" concept as a key driver of economic development in the emerging markets

The paper begins with the understanding that the three-decade-long transition period from a socialist economy to the market one, as an integral part of comprehensive changes in Eastern Europe, both political and ideological ones, remains to be a quite problematic and ongoing process. When it comes to less-developed or transition countries, with a special focus on the Western Balkans, a popular opinion is that the impact of deindustrialization on countries in transition was as painful and radical as the "coming" of socialism. Therefore, when addressing the need for a new formula for development, it is a matter of great concern that today's multipolar world lacks well-established development paradigms, particularly taking into account an obvious stagnation in reforms, i.e. the so-called reform failure. In the authors' opinion, it is possible to end the crisis in underdeveloped and transition countries only by introducing a "new" order, i.e. by finding a "new" economic development paradigm. In the light of the above, this paper indicates the need to replace the current transitional models of economic transformation with a turn-around strategy that would be based on reindustrialization, i.e. newly created industrial policies. Finally, this would imply the implementation of the “second curve“(the “S-curve”) concept in the change management processes.

Drawing on a range of theoretical frameworks to illuminate various aspects of visual and textual representations, this study analyses the ways museums, museum visits, and museum exhibits and activities are represented in contemporary narrative picturebooks featuring a child character going to a museum for a variety of reasons. Analysis of approximately fifty museum picturebooks using a multimodal content analysis tool led to the construction of findings in the following themes: representations of museums; representations of museum exhibits; museum visitors; reasons for museum visits; museum activities and events; children’s attitudes while visiting museums; and metaleptic transgressions in picturebook representations. The findings suggest the potential implications of these multimodal texts in the hands of teachers and young readers.

In today's globalized, fast-changeable, and digitalized market, companies strongly need and seek talents, who, besides basic skills, possess higher levels, as well as the optimal mix of different competencies and qualifications. Attracting the best employees, developing and retaining them represents a crucial success factor for any firm and requires well-organized talent management. The purpose of this study is to analyze the influence of talent management, viewed through attracting, developing, and retaining talents, on organizational performance improvement in companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Data collection is based on a questionnaire, related to core elements of talent management and organizational performance (profitability and sales growth), with respondents from the population of talented managers, who work in companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The findings indicate that talent management has a positive statistically significant influence on observed organizational performance in companies in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Since talented managers are a key strategic resource, who lead organizations to accomplish excellent organizational performance, companies in developing countries need to tailor effective and customized talent management strategies, to achieve continuous improvement of organizational outcomes.

This article addresses the phenomenon of gameplay video watching on YouTube. The study investigates what drives people to watch gameplay videos and what gratifications they seek in performing the activity of gameplay viewing. To this end, the authors adopted the uses and gratifications theory (UGT) and a qualitative methodology involving three online discussion groups with 100 members of international gameplay communities. While the results pinpoint the attractiveness of the player as the most important motive, other reasons, such as preview and learning aspects or substitution for the real game, also appear to be important. The qualitative approach enabled to uncover unique aspects of the motives of watching YouTube gameplay videos. In this respect, five distinctive types of gameplay viewers are identified – Spectator, Performer, Selector, Viewer, and Substitutor – where each of them seems to engage in such practices with specific motives and accompanying gratifications.

Sex and sexuality are deemed “sensitive” issues in relatively conservative, predominantly Muslim countries. Men’s sex and sexualities research within such cultural contexts confronts certain challenges and raises important methodological issues. This paper reflects on some of the methodological issues and challenges encountered when carrying out a study in Bangladesh. It reports on a male researcher’s qualitative study of men’s sexual health and masculinity in Bangladesh, a predominantly Muslim country where sexuality is largely constituted as a taboo subject. The researcher faced challenges in gaining access and in discussing sex and sexuality issues in interview settings. Moreover, the interview context emerged as a site for expressing, negotiating, challenging men and masculinities. Drawing upon experiences in navigating the “field” in Bangladesh, some of the useful ways of researching “sensitive” issues such as sex, sexuality, and masculinity within these settings are suggested, highlighting what works when researching men’s sexual health and masculinity.

The importance of high quality public sector control is an obvious fact – without efficient and effective control system, the risk of wasting public funds is critical. The goal of this article was to evaluate efficiency of internal control systems on the level of regional self-administration in the Slovakia. The findings clearly document many problems related to the performance of regional control bodies and on this basis purposes and possible actions are proposed. From the point of view of "fiscal rules", the research, for example, pointed to an exceptionally poor situation in compliance with the rules and conditions of budgetary management in the Bystrica region in the period 2006-2009. The research also proves that one of the key problems of nonconceptual and non-transparent asset management of regions is confusing and disadvantageous asset sales. The quantitative analysis suggests that the efficiency (intensity) of the functioning of regional control systems does not have a direct impact on the monitored output indicators. The implemented DEA also indicates the low effectivity of the internal control systems of the regions. Our findings fully prove that there are no truly efficient systems of external and internal control at the level of self-governing regions in Slovakia. The factor of high autonomy of regions in the financial management and disposal of assets in connection with the identified high degree of failure of the regional control system generates a clear need to strengthen the system of internal control of regions, based on systemic and procedural changes.

The study examines and compares various interpretations of the term camera as a means of expression in the individual stages of the development of film sciences, as well as the overlap of the mentioned theoretical conceptsinto groundbreaking film pieces by relevant filmmakers. In addition to theoretical knowledge, based on aesthetic and philosophical concepts, it also monitors their practical crossovers into cinematographic and directorialpractice. The paper examines two basic periods in which the camera phenomenon developed – the period of classical film shooting on film stock, i.e. the period of analogue production and the period of digital production, which brought new theoretical knowledge into the development of the camera phenomenon. The study seeks toposition the phenomenon of the cinematographic camera, which lies at the crossroads of art and technology. The value of this concept in film theories oscillates between the recording device and the means of expression. Theauthors of theoretical conceptions lead a long-term ontological and semiological discourse on how tounderstand the phenomenon of the camera in film – whether the camera is more like a pen writing in a speciallanguage or it is to be understood as a specific writing type or style. In any case, thanks to light, its mechanical-optical-electronical equipment conveys a cut-out of reality, which is a testimony of a special form and content. Film theory poses many questions and answers some of them, thanks to the knowledge of camera significancein film production realization. The purpose of this article is to zoom into the theoretical and practical side of looking at the phenomenon of cinematographic camera.

1931. F. Poulenc writes Quatre Poemes de Guillaume Apollinaire (FP 58), containing the poem Avant le cinema (3rd part). While not sharing the poet’s insight about the fate of cinema and its creators, the composer accurately reproduced the image of Le cinéma muet with fluctuating and colourful music in respect to the cinema of that time. Meanwhile, the era of films with sound began. Although he tried to write music for films, Poulenc did not literally become a “master of soundtracks”. Nevertheless, at the beginning of the 21st century, the composer’s music confidently takes root on the silver screen. Its presence in films, firstly, testifies to the status of F. Poulenc’s composer heritage as a “musical classic”, taking the position of a “strong style”, and secondly, expands its perception experience, introducing the “new Poulenc” within “double coding”. Thirdly and finally, the composer’s creativity appears as an open conceptual project in the new “cinema incarnations”. Along with this, the article alsokeeps in mind the “film looking” effect on F. : Developments in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) have led tomajor changes in public administration in all democratic states. The fact that informationcan be made public and accessible from anywhere, at any time, requires a new approach tothe process of computerization of public administration. The objective of the research wasto know the influence of ITC integration in the EU state administrations on corruptioncontrol in the period 2010 - 2019. We selected four relevant variables, which we integratedin a panel analysis including the 27 EU member states. Using STATA we made aneconometric model on panel data and obtained interesting results from a scientific point ofview. The results show that the integration of ICTs in the EU public administrations hassignificantly contribution to reducing corruption These results demonstrate the need toaccelerate the digitization of administrations and create an integrated model of governmentcloud in the European administrative space. In addition, the results of the researchhighlight the differences between EU states in terms of the impact of ICTs on governmentefficiency and economic development.
