NOTES ON A CLAY MOULD FOR BROOCH CASTING RECENTLY DISCOVERED FROM THE GREAT HUNGARIAN PLAIN

NOTES ON A CLAY MOULD FOR BROOCH CASTING RECENTLY DISCOVERED FROM THE GREAT HUNGARIAN PLAIN

NOTES ON A CLAY MOULD FOR BROOCH CASTING RECENTLY DISCOVERED FROM THE GREAT HUNGARIAN PLAIN

Author(s): Vitalie Bârcă / Language(s): English / Issue: 3/2019

Keywords: workshops; brooches; bronze; moulds; half-finished; the Sarmatians; the Vandals; Dacia; Przeworsk; Barbaricum;

The object herein is the examination of the clay mould for brooch casting discovered in site 7 of Ecser (Hungary), investigated during May 2004 – June 2006 by rescue archaeological excavations performed prior to the construction of the express road M0, a bypass of Budapest. The mould was found in feature 4180 linked to the 3rd century AD Sarmatian settlement. Based on the morphological analysis of the Ecser mould, the author notes it was used for making brooches type Almgren group VII, series I, the headknob variation, external chord and vertical catchplate and by no means a pattern for casting Roman brooches. The recent typological analysis of brooches of the type shows that the mould was used for making brooches type Cociș-Bârcă B2a1a1, mainly used between the last two decades of the 2nd century AD and mid 3rd century AD.The presence of the mould in the settlement at Ecser evidences the production of brooches of type Almgren group VII, series I, the headknob variation, external chord and vertical catchplate (B2a1a1) in territories inhabited by the Sarmatians in the Great Hungarian Plain, as well as an existing workshop for their making nearby.Based on the origin, diffusion area of these brooches and the workshops producing them, but also certain historical and archaeological realities, the author maintains that the making of such brooches in the settlement at Ecser must be ascribed rather to an artisan arriving to the territory inhabited by the Sarmatian Iazyges or in connection with the Germanic world.The frequent presence of brooches of the type beside other brooch types and Germanic artefact categories evidence contacts and cultural and economic interferences between various populations, but it also very clearly establishes the movement direction of certain groups of Germanic populaces starting with the last quarter of the 2nd century AD

Keywords: social economy; structure of social economy; social enterprise; third sector; Trieste; Romania;

his article presents the results of the research activity carried out within the Project entitled “Alternative policies in the social economy”, implemented between 27.04.2018 - 26.11.2019 by Uniunea Generală a Industriașilor din România (UGIR 1903), filiala Dolj / The General Union of Industrialists of Romania (UGIR 1903), Dolj Branch. The project was financed from the Operational Program Administrative Capacity 2014-2020 and had as purpose the elaboration of an alternative public policy proposal in the field of social economy in Romania. We will discuss, for a start, the methodological benchmarks and theoretical premises that guided the investigative approach. We will delimit the sphere of the concept of “social economy”, as it is understood in the scientific literature and in the European and national documents of public policy, after which we will review the most important trends that have characterized the evolution of the third sector at international level in the last ones decades. During the research, study visits were undertaken to the social enterprises in Trieste, Italy, considered a successful model and, at the same time, a concrete example of the functionality and sustainability of the social economy systems. After presenting the Triestian system as a model of good practice, we will operate a retrospective on the emergence and implementation of the social economy in Romania, both under institutional and legal report, in order to be able to make a correct diagnosis on the current state of affairs. Finally, starting with the public policy proposal, we will propose a series of concrete solutions for the consolidation and development of the social economy in Romania.

INDIAN AND PAKISTANI REGIME TRAJECTORIES: SOCIAL HIERARCHY AND MAJORITY RELIGION’S PUBLIC PRESENCE VERSUS DEMOCRACY

INDIAN AND PAKISTANI REGIME TRAJECTORIES: SOCIAL HIERARCHY AND MAJORITY RELIGION’S PUBLIC PRESENCE VERSUS DEMOCRACY

Author(s): Agnieszka Nitza-Makowska / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2020

Keywords: India; Pakistan; democracy; Islam; Hinduism; regime trajectory;

The hierarchical organisation of society and the lack of distinction between the public and private sphere in Islam and Hinduism are cultural features of India and Pakistan that seem inconsistent with democracy. Reservation policy and the recognition of the most popular regional languages both demonstrate the adjustment of India’s democratic framework to the caste system and the arithmetic of ethnic groups respectively. These measures have helped to pave the way for India's smooth political transition. In contrast to the Indian National Congress, the Muslim League refused to introduce similar solutions in Pakistan. The public presence of Hinduism in India and Islam in Pakistan have barely affected the countries overall political trajectories. However, the recent radicalisation, marked by the rise of the Bharatiya Janata Party in India and the emergence of the Islamist political movements, including the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Party in Pakistan, have triggered tendencies towards authoritarianism. This paper concludes by reconsidering the similarities between the impact of the majority religion’s public presence on the post-2014 Indian and Pakistani regime trajectories. By the comparative analysis of the two countries, this study contributes to the contemporary debates in political sciences about the rise of authoritarianism and the demand for identity.

Polityka klimatyczna jako niezależny element polityki zagranicznej Unii Europejskiej – wnioski dla Polski

Author(s): Krzysztof Bolesta / Language(s): Polish / Issue: 1/2020

Keywords: climate policy; trade policy; foreign and security policy; negotiations; climate; climate diplomacy; European Union; European Commission

Climate and trade diplomacy are the largest multilateral negotiation processes today, involving 196 and 164 countries respectively. Consequently, climate and trade policy are also the most internationalised areas of the European Union’s (EU) activity. Interestingly, both areas were developed in the EU outside the framework of the Common Foreign and Security Policy. In pursuing climate and trade policy, the European Commission has developed special mechanisms and procedures that are tailored specifically to its needs. While it is extremely difficult to agree traditional foreign policy decisions within the EU, climate diplomacy, often agreed by majority voting, is gaining importance with each new term of the European Commission. This study discusses the origins of EU climate policy and tries to answer the question of why it has gone beyond the scope of the institutional structure prepared under treaties to conduct foreign policy. This study also presents Poland’s place in global climate negotiations. The authors try to show why and how the Polish administration should use the existing, practical division of competences in European climate policy and the potential accumulated in the organisation of three global climate summits in a fairly short period of time. They try to prove that climate policy is and will remain an effective tool for building the state’s position in international diplomacy.

ASSESSING VARIABLES AFFECTING THE FINANCIAL DISTRESS OF STATE-OWNED ENTERPRISES IN INDONESIA (EMPIRICAL STUDY IN NON-FINANCIAL SECTOR)

ASSESSING VARIABLES AFFECTING THE FINANCIAL DISTRESS OF STATE-OWNED ENTERPRISES IN INDONESIA (EMPIRICAL STUDY IN NON-FINANCIAL SECTOR)

Author(s): Nur Sayidah,Aminullah Assagaf / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2020

Keywords: financial distress; subsidy; investment; leverage; cash flow from operation;

The financial distress of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) has become the main focus of numerous researchers due to the ongoing financial burden on the state and their inability to secure independent funding. The purpose of this study is to investigate the variables that affect the financial distress of SOEs in Indonesia that have received government subsidies. This research is a quantitative study conducted using secondary data collected from the Indonesian Stock Exchange, from a total of 19 SOEs from 2014 to 2017. The analysis found that investment (X2INV), leverage (X3LEV), cash flow from operating (X4CFO), and firm size (X5SIZE) have a significant negative effect on financial distress in SOEs. It means that increases in these variables will reduce the potential for corporate financial distress. While the independent working capital (X1WC) variable has no significant effect on financial distress, because it is temporary and has a dynamic change, so it is unable to show its influence on financial distress. SOE’s management that receives government subsidies can increase the amount of profitable investment to increase marginal revenue, thereby reducing financial distress. Higher leverage can reduce the level of financial distress, indicating that management uses debt to finance projects that generate higher marginal revenue than marginal costs. This condition has an impact on increasing operating cash flow. The higher the operating cash flow will reduce financial distress.

WILL THE WINNER STILL BE THE WINNER? A STUDY OF EQUITY MUTUAL FUND PERFORMANCE IN INDONESIA

Author(s): Budi Frensidy,Reynardo Nainggolan,Robiyanto Robiyanto / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2020

Keywords: equity mutual fund; performance consistency; Indonesia;

In this study, we explore the consistency of Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) – denominated equity mutual funds offered in Indonesia from 2007 to 2017 from various holding periods, namely one year, three years, and five years. Two questions are addressed. Will the winning mutual funds be the winner in the following period? Is the performance of a longer period more persistent than that of the shorter period? Using the nominal return from these eleven years, we find that the equity mutual funds in Indonesia earn no stable performance. The winner will not always be the winner in the following observed period. In addition, no evidence is found that long-term performance would result in a better persistence than that of the shorter time frame.

IMPACT OF DYNAMIC STRATEGIC CAPABILITIES ON STRATEGIC ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN PRESENCE OF OUTSOURCING OF FIVE STARS HOTELS IN JORDAN

Author(s): Sulieman Ibraheem Al-Hawary,Mohammad Sultan Al-Syasneh / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2020

Keywords: dynamic strategic capability; strategic entrepreneurship; outsourcing; five stars hotels; Jordan;

This research aims to investigate whether outsourcing mediates the impact of dynamic strategic capabilities on strategic entrepreneurship. The population of the research consists of top managers in five stars hotels. A sample of 215 respondents were selected for the research in which 186 questionnaires were valid for statistical analysis. Structural equation modelling (SEM) was used to test the hypotheses of the research. The results of the research indicate that outsourcing does not mediate the relationship between dynamic strategic capabilities and strategic entrepreneurship. All the dimensions of dynamic strategic capabilities have a statistical impact on strategic entrepreneurship, while the dynamic strategic capabilities dimension all affect outsourcing except the seizing capability. Based on the research results, managers and decision-makers have to focus on innovation functions by enhancing the role of knowledge management and R&D activities, as well as concentrate on employees training programs.

Keywords: individual entrepreneurial orientation; entrepreneurial success; grit; consistency of interest; perseverance of effort; crisis;

Successful enterprise has been related to numerous characteristics including entrepreneurial orientation. The current study aims to examine the influence of individual entrepreneurial orientation and grit dimensions on entrepreneurial success. The potential mediating role of consistency of interest and perseverance of effort, on the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and success, was also explored. Survey data were collected in Tripoli, Libya from entrepreneurs during the current economic downturn and crisis. The data from the usable 147 responses was analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modelling. The statistical results revealed a significant relationship between the individual entrepreneurial orientation, consistency of interest, and perseverance of effort, with the dependent variable, entrepreneurial success. The dimensions of grit were also found to mediate the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and success. The cross-sectional nature of the study and the smaller sample size make the findings difficult to generalize. Verification of the significance of success predictors can unravel concerns about the low rate of established and nascent businesses despite the presence of opportunities and positive perception of entrepreneurship. The study of grit dimensions as a mediator between the individual entrepreneurial orientation and success is unprecedented.

INCOME TAX GROUPING AS TAX MANAGEMENT TOOL: LESSONS FROM EU WITH FOCUS ON POLAND

INCOME TAX GROUPING AS TAX MANAGEMENT TOOL: LESSONS FROM EU WITH FOCUS ON POLAND

Author(s): Andrzej Karpowicz / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2020

Keywords: income tax; tax management; taxation; return on equity; tax grouping; business tax;

The paper discusses the availability tax grouping among EU countries as well as benefits and costs of this tax incentive. Article focuses on Poland, where real usage of this tax management tool is analysed. Grounds for its (low) popularity are investigated. Analysis was made primarily based on observation of values and time trends build on data published by Polish Ministry of Finance, Statistical Yearbooks, PwC reports and Eurostat. Although tax grouping for corporate income tax purposes is offered by half of EU Member States, Poland is the only CEE country that offers this tax allowance. However, Polish corporations rarely use it in practice. Reasons include elevated entry requirements, lack of VAT grouping, low corporate income tax rate, lack of additional withholding tax benefits, no possibility of tax losses utilization, profitability requirements or retroactive duties in case of losing a status of a tax group. Those obstacles seem to outweigh the benefits of higher net return on capital, decreased transfer pricing requirements, higher liquidity and limited tax compliance burden. Those limited gains are prized primarily by biggest Polish entities, which indeed use tax grouping. The novelty and value of this paper lies in analysis of important topic from practical perspective, which was not thoroughly verified before both in Poland but also in other jurisdictions. It may also serve as a hint for managers considering entrance in a tax group and policymakers, while amending tax law regulations.

PEER-TO-PEER LENDING PLATFORM: FROM SUBSTITUTION TO COMPLEMENTARY FOR RURAL BANKS

PEER-TO-PEER LENDING PLATFORM: FROM SUBSTITUTION TO COMPLEMENTARY FOR RURAL BANKS

Author(s): Cliff Kohardinata,Novrys Suhardianto,Bambang Tjahjadi / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2020

Keywords: banking; rural bank; FinTech; P2P lending; substitution; complementary;

This study aims to examine the impact of the growth of peer-to-peer (P2P) lending on the growth of rural bank lending. Further, this study investigates the outcome of the partnership agreement between the Rural Bank Association and Financial Technology (FinTech) Association in the last quarter of 2017 on the effect of P2P lending on rural bank lending by analyzing the impact separately in 2018 and 2019. The publicly available data from the Financial Services Authority and Bank of Indonesia were examined using panel data regression. The results show that P2P lending’s growth is a substitute for the growth of the rural bank loan in 2018. However, the partnership between the Rural Bank Association and FinTech Association changed the effect of substitution into complementary in 2019. Moreover, the impact of P2P lending was more prominent in provinces with a higher number of rural banks and regions with lower economic growth. The restricted number of publicly available data becomes the limitation of this study to obtain the best results.

HIRING AND RETAINING SKILLED EMPLOYEES IN SMES: PROBLEMS IN HUMAN RESOURCE PRACTICES AND LINKS WITH ORGANIZATIONAL SUCCESS

HIRING AND RETAINING SKILLED EMPLOYEES IN SMES: PROBLEMS IN HUMAN RESOURCE PRACTICES AND LINKS WITH ORGANIZATIONAL SUCCESS

Author(s): Yuriy Bilan,Halyna Mishchuk,Iryna Roshchyk,Olena Joshi / Language(s): English / Issue: 2/2020

Keywords: human resource; organizational economic success; SMEs; hiring; retention; vacancies;

The ability to attract and retain the talents is an important factor in the competitiveness of countries, as it is confirmed in our study. At the level of small and medium-sized enterprises, hiring and retaining skilled workers is one of the most difficult tasks of HR management, especially in transition economies with a high intensity of “leaching out” the skilled workers due to labour migration. Our research in Ukraine, which is a prime example of such countries, conducted via the cluster analysis allows us to conclude that the problems of hiring and retaining skilled workers have some connection with profitability: there is almost always a problem with filling vacancies with people of all educational levels in unprofitable enterprises, which is not typical of profitable businesses. The main problems with filling vacancies according to employers’ estimations are: 1) market factors – shortage of employees with the required skills; 2) internal problems of ensuring the attractiveness of jobs (material – pay, and intangible – career prospects, flexible working hours, legal employment); 3) internal factors of inefficient HR management, including recruiting; 4) psycho-physiological factors of job satisfaction. However, there are no close links between the factors of hiring effectiveness and retention of skilled workers with the economic success of the organization in the form of the growth of assets, revenues and stuff. This leads to the conclusion that the practices of human resources management in small and medium-sized businesses in Ukraine are largely built chaotic, without analyzing the impact on the efficiency of the use of other resources and without providing links with the overall economic efficiency of enterprises.

CONVERSION OF ONLINE PURCHASE INTENTION INTO ACTUAL PURCHASE: THE MODERATING ROLE OF TRANSACTION SECURITY AND CONVENIENCE

CONVERSION OF ONLINE PURCHASE INTENTION INTO ACTUAL PURCHASE: THE MODERATING ROLE OF TRANSACTION SECURITY AND CONVENIENCE

Author(s): Ni Luh Putu Indiani,Gabriel Aprinau Fahik / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2020

Keywords: transaction security; transaction convenience; online purchase intention; actual purchase; online retail industry; online purchase behaviour;

Online retail trade in Indonesia has grown dramatically in recent years. However, it is not being followed by an increase in the transaction completion ratio, with a cart abandonment rate of up to 70 percent. This indicates that the transition from online purchase intention to actual purchase is not as simple as postulated in the theory of planned behaviour (TPB); yet, there are other factors moderating the conversion. Therefore, this study aims to develop a model analysing the moderating role of perceived transaction security and convenience in the relationship between online purchase intention and actual purchase. Model development was also motivated by critics regarding TPB’s robustness in explaining consumer purchase behaviour; therefore, this model is expected to enrich TPB by providing a more comprehensive picture in online purchase behaviour. The sample consisted of consumers who had shopped for retail products online. The proposed relationship was tested with partial least square method. Results showed that perceived transaction convenience has a positive and significant moderating effect, whereas perceived transaction security showed an insignificant moderating impact. This finding is noteworthy amid risky online purchase environment. Respondents’ characteristics and alternative payment methods might explain the insignificant moderation. As a practical implication, it is recommended that online retailers improve online transaction convenience to increase the conversion rate.

DETERMINANTS OF TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS IN HEALTH TOURISM ENTERPRISES

DETERMINANTS OF TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS IN HEALTH TOURISM ENTERPRISES

Author(s): Elżbieta Szymańska,Eugenia Panfiluk / Language(s): English / Issue: 1/2020

Keywords: some innovations; radical innovations; technology; tourism; health tourism;

The research problem is the implementation of technological innovations in health tourism services. The main purpose of the paper is diagnosing determinants of technological innovativeness of enterprises that provide health tourism services. Two detailed objectives were laid down – specifically, an indication of these determinants in respect of the range and type of a technological innovation. The methods applied in the research are: Delphi method, comparative analysis, the range method and the standardised interview method. In order to indicate determinants the following research techniques were used: Kruskal - Wallis test, factor analysis, analysis of medium-rank test, Spearman’s rank order correlation test. The primary result is diagnosing determinants affecting technological innovativeness of the subjects under study which are: quality of endogenous human capital of the surveyed entities and inflow of external information. The research is of ground-breaking nature since until now, technological innovations in health tourism have not been described in economy literature. The results have an impact on the development of economics and management sciences, contributing to the development of innovation theory and enterprise management. Moreover, the results potentially contribute to the practical aspect by means of their application by practitioners – organisers of health tourism.
