Broken Masculinities. Solitude, Alienation, and Frustration in Turkish Literature after 1970

Broken Masculinities. Solitude, Alienation, and Frustration in Turkish Literature after 1970

Author(s): Çimen Günay-Erkol / Language(s): English

Keywords: Turkish fiction in 20th century; Masculinity in literature; 1970 coup in Turkey; gender and sexuality through literature; Politics in literature

Broken Masculinities portrays the post-dictatorial novel of the 1970s in all its complexity, and introduces the reader to a 1968-era Turkey, a period which challenges Turkey’s now reinforced Islamic image by portraying the quest for sexual liberation and critical student uprisings. Günay-Erkol argues that the literature written after the 1970 coup in Turkey constitutes a coherent sub-genre and needs to be considered together. These novels share a common ground which is rich in images of men and women craving for power: general isolation, sexual-emotional frustration, and a traumatic sense of solitude and alienation.This book is an original and significant contribution to two major fields of study: (1) gender and sexuality with respect to formation of subjectivity through literature, and (2) modern literature and history through the study of Turkish literature. The chief concern in this book is not only literature’s response to a particular period in Turkey, but also the role of literature in bearing witness to trauma and drastic political acts of violence—and coming to terms with them.

In Search of the Self: Reconciling the Past and the Present in Immigrants’ Experience

Author(s): Larisa Fialkova,Maria Yelenevskaya / Language(s): English

This book is a follow-up to our project devoted to personal narratives of ex-Soviets in Israel. Our original plan was to collect previously published articles dealing with immigration issues but differing from the main themes of our book Ex-Soviets in Israel: From Personal Narratives to a Group Portrait (Fialkova & Yelenevskaya 2007). The themes of immigrants in the city, attitude to law, immigrants’ literature and humor were touched upon but not developed in depth in that volume.They were researched in a number of papers written later (Fialkova &Yelenevskaya 2006, 2006a, 2011, 2012, Yelenevskaya & Fialkova 2006,2008) and discussed in our presentations at 11 scholarly conferences.However, when we re-read the articles we realized that the situation in the Russian-speaking community was so dynamic that studies conducted three-five years ago should be seriously revised and updated.

Proper names in Italian translations of contemporary Polish novels

Le denominazioni proprie nelle traduzioni italiane della narrativa contemporanea polacca

Author(s): Joanna Ozimska / Language(s): Italian

Keywords: proper names; onomastics; Polish novels; translation studies; Polish literature; Italian translation; toponyms

Proper names are important in social life due to numerous features and they are an interesting material for literary creation. Nomina propria present on the pages of contemporary Polish novels because of their form and semantics can be a source of information about the value, trends in naming, may also constitute a challenge for literary translators. The aim of this study is to examine translation strategies and techniques applied to different categories of proper names within contemporary Polish fiction translated into Italian and to demonstrate that the names used in literature can be a translation problem worthy of deeper understanding and description due to the complex nature of proper names. The study has been conducted to investigate names of the twenty selected novels published in Italy in the years 2002–2013 by well known publishing houses as well as by smaller ones, specialized in Slavic literature. The analyzed novels were written by Andrzej Stasiuk, Olga Tokarczuk, Jacek Dehnel, Jerzy Pilch, Dorota Masłowska, Paweł Huelle, Katarzyna Grochola, Tomek Tryzna, Małgorzata Musierowicz, Marek Krajewski, Wojciech Kuczok. The analyzed material belongs to the modern canon of Polish prose, which – as research has shown – is among the literature willingly translated into foreign languages, not only European, as evidenced by the data presented in the first chapter of the thesis, provided by the Book Institute located in Cracow, an institution created in 2004 to promote the Polish language and literature in the world.

Various Dimensions of Contrastive Studies (całość)

Author(s): / Language(s): English

Keywords: phonological system; morphological system; syntactic system; lexis; culture and language; contrastive linguistics

The collective monograph entitled Various Dimensions of Contrastive Studies contains nineteen articles written by researchers from university centres in Poland and other European countries. The authors analyse mainly data from English and Polish, including also linguistic material from other Germanic or Slavic languages, as well as from Romanic, Celtic, Altaic and Finno-Ugric languages. The chapters that make up the first part of this volume discuss the theoretical issues of the phonological, morphological or syntactic system of the languages being compared. The chapters in the second part focus on lexical issues, referring, among others, to the mechanism of conceptual metaphor and specialist terminology. The third part contains chapters on academic discourse, on the relationships between culture and language, and on the process of acquiring a foreign language. The monograph presents a variety of research problems in the field of contrastive linguistics. It is also an illustration of the variety of research methods and theoretical assumptions adopted by the authors of the texts. The book is addressed to linguists engaged in contrastive research (in various theoretical approaches). It can also be useful for philology students and other readers interested in language contact and linguistic diversity.

Absurd in French theatre of Dada and Pre-Surrealism

L’absurde dans le théâtre Dada et présurréaliste français

Author(s): Mariana Kunešová / Language(s): French

Keywords: French theatre; absurd in theatre; French Dada; pre-surrealist theatre; aesthetics; avant-garde of 1950s;

The publication focuses on the absurd in the French Dada and pre-surrealist theatre, examining the scenical potential of three texts which have, until now, remained practically unexplored: “La Premiere aventure celeste de Mr. Antipyrine” by T. Tzara, “Les Mysteres de l’amour” by R. Vitrac, and “S’il vous plait” by A. Breton and P. Soupault. The author understands the absurd as an aesthetic category applicable to theatre analysis in general – contrary to the “Theatre of the absurd”, a concept suggested by M. Esslin in order to characterize the avant-garde of the 1950s and often criticized for its lack of precision. The conclusion evaluates Esslin's contribution to the study of the absurd in theatre.

The Burden of the Balkans

Author(s): Edith Durham / Language(s): English

At the end of 1903, the British traveller and writer Edith Durham (1863-1944) departed for a five-month stay in the Balkans to take part in humanitarian work on behalf of the Macedonian Relief Committee. It also includes an account of her first lengthy expedition, on horseback and on foot, through the wilds of southern and central Albania.With the many dashes of irony and humour, at which Edith Durham was a master, „The Burden of the Balkans“ is a work that can still be savoured by all.

Author(s): Raluca Nicoleta Șerban / Language(s): Romanian

Keywords: mise-en-abyme; self-fictionalization; transference; author; character; postmodernism; irony; parody

This book aims to establish a connection between the American postmodern author John Barth and autobiographic fiction, via the literary technique borrowed from heraldry, la mise-en-abyme. More precisely, the author has looked for answers to the questions the American writer himself was asking as early as the 1980s, both in his essays, and in his fiction, questions revolving around the issue of the necessity of writing novels persistently featuring himself as a character.

Myths and Traditions of Central European University Culture

Author(s): Jiří Hanuš,Lukáš Fasora / Language(s): English

Keywords: myths; traditions; university; university environment; Humboldtian ideal; academic capitalism; university governance; society contribution;

This publication aims to provide a cultural analysis of the university environment, where the main analytical tool is the concept of the “myth,” both as a cultural phenomenon linking academia’s present with its past, and as a Jungian archetype. The authors conceive of myths as firmly tied to symbols which abound in education, rituals, hierarchical symbols and various traditions. This book presents to English readers the university culture of the so-called Humboldtian academic tradition, while focusing on the Czech higher education system in comparison to those of˛Germany, Poland, Austria and other countries. Of significant importance are the characteristics of˛Central European universities whose development in the 20th century was marked by discontinuity. This book mainly looks at academic culture from the position of the nonmetropolitan universities that emerged in the 19th and 20th centuries. Although the authors have conceived of this book historically, they are also interested in current issues, particularly the dispute between the Humboldtian ideal and “academic capitalism,” the search for university unity within the framework of pressures to diversify, trends which weaken university freedoms, and the various forms of university administration. The authors have tried to inspire debate not only within historical circles, but also amongst those interested across the university community.

Turbulence in the Post-Cold War Era

Turbulence in the Post-Cold War Era

Author(s): Stanisław Bieleń / Language(s): English

Keywords: turbulence; international order; Russia; post-Cold War era; polycentrism; West

The author pinpoints the relations between geopolitics and globalisation from the angle of the post-Cold War politically turbulent order. Against this background of a clash between two opposing tendencies – revisionism and defence of the status quo – the author determines the dynamics of the deconcentration of forces in the international system, which is increasingly polycentric and less and less monocentric. He devotes much attention to the identity crisis of the West (from the crisis of US leadership to the depreciation of NATO). He characterizes Russia, with its aspirations to rebuild its superpower status and its imperial mission, as the main geopolitical opponent of the West. Pointing to the contemporary discourse on Russia and the risk of escalating a new confrontation reminiscent of the Cold War era, he critically assesses the consequences of Poland's international policy.

English Literature Advancing Through History 2

Author(s): Tatiana Golban / Language(s): English

Keywords: Literature Series; Text books; English Literature; Humanism; Literary heritage; literature; Renaissance literature; Shakespeare; Thomas More; Utopia;

The present book is second in a series of works which aim to expose the complexity and essence, power and extent of the major periods, movements, trends, genres, authors, and literary texts in the history of English literature. Following this aim, the series will consist of monographs which cover the most important ages and experiences of English literary history, including Anglo-Saxon or Old English period, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Restoration, neoclassicism, romanticism, Victorian Age, and the twentieth-century and contemporary literary backgrounds. The reader of these volumes will acquire the knowledge of literary terminology along with the theoretical and critical perspectives on certain texts and textual typology belonging to different periods, movements, trends, and genres. The reader will also learn about the characteristics and conventions of these literary periods and movements, trends and genres, main writers and major works, and the literary interaction and continuity of the given periods. Apart from an important amount of reference to literary practice, some chapters on these periods include information on their philosophy, criticism, worldview, values, or episteme, in the Foucauldian sense, which means that even though the condition of the creative writing remains as the main concern, it is balanced by a focus on the condition of thought as well as theoretical and critical writing during a particular period.

Author(s): Pavel Žůrek,Martin Flašar / Language(s): English,Czech

Keywords: art history; Bohuslav Martinů; Jan Novák; music; 40s; 50s;

The publication reveals details of Bohuslav Martinů’s relations with his pupil and composer Jan Novák in the years 1947–1959 against the background of preserved correspondence. The book brings an edition of a set of letters from Martinů to Novák and also Jan Novák’s correspondence about Martinů and vice versa. The interpretation of the newly acquired sources reveals a rich network of related facts, events and contacts that reconstruct the framework of contemporary musical culture. They also define the role of Jan Novák and his wife Eliška in promoting Martinů’s work in the 1950’s in our country at a time when he was facing politically engaged criticism. The monograph also strives to point out parallels in the life and work of both composers, whether it is emigration, Europeanism, humanism or the relationship to folk music and theater. The book, which is published on the 100th anniversary of Jan Novák’s birth, seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding and appreciation of the work of this important composer, who was sentenced to compulsory collective amnesia due to emigration.

Sociophonology of Received Pronunciation

Author(s): Miroslav Ježek / Language(s): English

Keywords: recieved pronuncioation; RP; English language; Great Britain; England; phonology;

This work deals with Received Pronunciation (RP), the prestige accent in England and other parts of Great Britain. It examines the perception of this accent by English and Czech respondents. It also analyses the roles RP fulfils in the two environments. The first part provides both synchronic and diachronic theoretical frame that is inspired by a wealth of both up-to-date as well as historical literature. Furthermore, it analyses RP by means of sociolinguistic notions, especially those related to language prescription and standardisation. The practical part consists of a survey that has been made by means of a website with 18 recordings and an accompanying questionnaire. The recordings have been evaluated by 20 Czech and 20 English respondents. The survey also attempts to establish the sociolinguistic categories most closely linked with the mental construct of RP.

It analyses how this genre reflects contemporary French society and its position and role within it. In the second part, based on a selection of novels, the author specifies a number of themes which she finds are characteristic for the crime literature of this period. As a result of the analyses carried out in both parts of the thesis, the conclusion drawn is that French crime fiction after 1968 mainly represents the opinion base for the generation strongly influenced by the ultra left wing ideology of the May '68 riots. Subsequently, the genre has enabled this generation to disseminate its ideals and has presented the means for social and ideological criticism of French society.
