Bulgarian Historical Review (BHR) was founded in 1973 as the journal of the Institute of History (today Institute for Historical Studies) at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, published in English, French, German and Russian languages. A peer-reviewed quarterly (which since 1998 is released as a semi-annual in two double issues with the same sequence from 1 to 4), it publishes articles of original and significant research and interpretation, reviews of scholarly books, information of scientific activities, archival sources, bibliographies and other materials related to the Bulgarian and Balkan political, economic and cultural history as well as to the past of Central, Southeast and East Europe and the Eurasian region from the Antiquity until present days. Along with the historical studies the journal includes also researches of multidisciplinary character and new methodological approaches. Scholars not only from Bulgaria but from all over the world working in the field are welcome to submit articles. The editorial policy is guided by an international |Editorial Advisory Board.

Historical Review (Istoricheski Pregled - ISSN 0323-9748) has been published since 1945 in four issues annually. The magazine is processed at the Publishing Department of the Institute for Historical Studies – Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The articles focus mainly on problems of political, social, economic and cultural history from the Classical Antiquity to the present days. Reviews and bibliographical surveys are published too. Foreign scholars participate side by side with researchers from Bulgarian academic institutes and universities. The papers are principally in Bulgarian with attached abstract in English. Colleagues from Bulgaria and from abroad take place in the Editorial Board of the double blind peer-reviewed magazine.

In 2014, the series of “Proceedings of the Institute of History” (now Institute for Historical Studies) was restored. For four decades (1951-1990) thirty jubilee and thematic volumes with articles, studies and monographs, available in the major Bulgarian libraries, as well as in the libraries of a number of foreign scientific institutions, have been published. The new series began from the XXXI volume [(1) - as Proceedings of the Institute for Historical Studies], but with a new vision and researches consistent with the modern tendencies in the development of historical science.
