Keywords: Anna Szpakowska-Kujawska; contemporary art; sculpture and ceramics; painting; Lasówka; Symposium Wrocław '70; female artistic idiom

The book Artistic universes of Anna Szpakowska-Kujawska. Close up focuses on lessknown fields of diverse artistic activity of this prominent artist living in Wrocław, such as her participation in Symposium Wrocław’70, ceramic sculptures, Nigerian period (exotic “Calabashes”) and artforms made in Lasowka (painted collages and 3-dimensional Skrzydlaki – “Winged Ones”). The study in six chapters presents characteristic ranges of artistic work of this artist. It allows to set apart the particular specificity of this multimedial art. She holds it in the present discourse clarifying her, still not enough described formal-thematic values as well as a membership of the paradigm of contemporary work.

Painting as Existence — Personal Identity and Creative Attitude

Malarstwo jako egzystencja — tożsamość osobista a postawa twórcza

Author(s): Lech Kołodziejczyk / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: status of the artist; artistic creation; imagination; creative plan; inner reality of the artist and outer reality

Written in 2020, the monographic publication Malarstwo jako egzystencja – postawa twórcza a tożsamość osobista [Painting as Existence – Creative Attitude and Personal Identity] is in fact the second part of the publication published by University of Silesia Press in 2020: Pamięć czasu – malarstwo w czasach bankructwa duchowego [Memory of Time – Painting in Times of Spiritual Bankruptcy]. The new publication contains over 20 essays – comments and reflections on the fundamental issue, which is the problem of personal identification of the author in the creative experience. This complex authorial reflection, written in the context of over 40 years of painting practice, in which the issue of personal identity of the author resounds as a fundamental formative element, becomes a significant voice of a man deeply concerned about the state of current artistic activity, where the omission and disregard of this aspect extremely impoverishes the meaning and significance of many achievements in the current sphere of art.

Social Inclusion for Older Persons and Human Rights Law. The Potential for Universal and European Instruments

Social Inclusion for Older Persons and Human Rights Law. The Potential for Universal and European Instruments

Author(s): Barbara Mikołajczyk / Language(s): English

Keywords: human rights; social inclusion; older persons; international law; human rights mechanisms; vulnerable persons

Global ageing is a challenge to human rights law as older people are far more vulnerable to a range of social, economic and political barriers that effectively exclude them from mainstream society. Thus, this book proposes a model of how to improve national ageing policies internationally by changing the current paradigm in the perception of older persons from passive receivers of care and assistance to active contributors to society. The author points to the need to improve the visibility of older persons internationally, promotes the idea of a treaty on their rights, and identifies areas where states and non-state actors can positively influence their social inclusion at the national level.

"Thyestes" by Lucius Annaeus Seneca. Monograph study

„Thyestes” Lucjusza Anneusza Seneki. Opracowanie monograficzne

Author(s): Iwona Słomak / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Seneca's "Thyestes"; Senecan drama; tradition and innovation in Seneca’s plays

"Thyestes", to which this monograph is devoted, exhibits all the characteristics of the Senecan plays that facilitate the centuries-long interest in them on the part of scholars and lovers of literature. They are also responsible for the distinctiveness of the author’s work against the background of Greek tragedy — due to the philosophical-critical nature of the work, they disengage from a directly didactic tone in favor of provocation and irony, the potential to engage less with the emotions and more with the intellect of the audience. It is possible to also find here examples of Seneca’s characteristic semantic and formal solutions, which confirm the dynamic development of the genre in Antiquity and at the same time may seem fairly modern today.

Socio-cultural space of a complex settlement system

Przestrzeń społeczno-kulturowa złożonego układu osadniczego

Author(s): Jerzy Runge / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: socio-cultural space; complex settlement pattern; Upper Silesia; Katowice conurbation

The Katowice conurbation had taken shape beginning with the end of the 18th century in the borderlands of two states, Poland and Germany. In this sense, it was an area situated on the peripheries of both countries. Permanent and dynamic interactions between different national-ethnic groups resulted in cultural intermingling. Beginning with the middle of the 20th century, this complex settlement system was already at the centre of socio-economic development on a supra-regional scale. As a result of multidirectional migration, influenced by intensive industrialisation, social relations evolved between the migrants and the local (indigenous) population, as well as between the migrants themselves. The aim of this study is to analyse the early multicultural nature of selected cities in the Katowice conurbation against a methodological and terminological background and to indicate the extent to which this feature might be an asset in present-day socio-economic transformations in this area. The temporal and spatial overlapping of various origins of socio-cultural links and relations leads the author to formulate the concepts of cultural genotype and primary and secondary cultural genotype, and to exemplify the formation of cultural genotypes in the Katowice conurbation.

Narrating the Ghost: Readings in the Gothic and M.R. James

Narrating the Ghost: Readings in the Gothic and M.R. James

Author(s): Jacek Mydla / Language(s): English

Keywords: ghost story; literary Gothic; narrative; the fantastic; suspense

Jacek Mydla’s main goal in Narrating the Ghost: Readings in the Gothic and M. R. James is to explore selected “Gothic” narratives and Montague Rhodes James’s (1862–1936) ghost stories by means of the tools of narrative theory. Using these tools, Mydla identifies and describes the narrative technique of the classic ghost story, a literary genre of which, in popular recognition, M. R. James is one of the most prominent representatives. A guiding category is that of distance, which binds the analyses together and justifies the division of the book into two parts. In Part I, the author focuses on the ideological meaning of distance, which animated the rise and future development of the literary Gothic in England of the “Enlightenment” (second half of the seventeenth century) and the Victorian period (second half of the nineteenth century) England. In Part II, the author examines M. R. James’s use of a wide range of distancing devices whose main purpose was to transform readers into ghost-seers, a category in common use in contemporary subject literature. Mydla’s goal is to create a platform for the encounter between narrative theory and the ghost story. He shows that such encounter and dialogue can be productive, and in this way fills the gap in research caused by the fact that narrative theory, for a considerable period of its development, focused on realistic fiction. The motivation behind the analyses undertaken in this study is the desire to estimate the extent to which narrative theory can be applied productively to genres such as the mystery story, terror fiction and weird fiction and, more generally, the literary Gothic. M. R. James successfully made ghostly storytelling the chosen province of his activity as fiction author (which occupied him for more than twenty years), which may be an indication that ghost stories are a genre using their own narrative rhetoric.

Coal: Nature and Culture

Węgiel. Natura i kultura

Author(s): Ralph Crane / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: coal; culture; nature

While concerns about climate change have focused negative attention on the coal industry in recent years, as descendants of the Industrial Revolution we have all benefited from the mining of the black seam. Coal has influenced significantly the course of human history and our social and natural environments. This book explores coal’s industrial history and the extraordinary artistic responses to coal – in the works of numerous writers, including Zola, Lawrence and Orwell, to the way it inspired painters such as Turner, Monet and Van Gogh, and its place in film, song and folklore – as well as the surprising allure of coal tourism. This strikingly illustrated book provides an engaging and informative insight into the myriad ways coal has affected our lives.

–U–

Author(s): Tadeusz Sławek / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: fragment; metamorphosis; pause/dash; philology; language

We are asking how the practice of philology is possible and what are the ways of understanding literary scholarship today. We are moving along two paths. Following first of them, we conceive of literature as a mode of circulating knowledge and certain concepts of the world; the other teaches us that literature transmits also ways of living and reflection upon how we live. This reflection is always mediated by language, hence the purpose of our approach and the practice of –U– is to perform a nuanced study of words to demonstrate meanings which have been forgotten or deliberately passed by in order to help establish a certain vision of life and society. Philology is a formative instrument of the science of living-together. As Werner Hamacher has put it: “Philology fights in a world civil war for language and for the world against the industrial manufacture of language and of the world.”

The world of avifauna VI in Polish and Czech translations of the Holy Bible (Sparrow)

Świat awifauny VI w polskich i czeskich przekładach Pisma Świętego: wróbel

Author(s): Lubomír Hampl / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Czech and Polish language; Bible; translation studies; avifaunistic terminology; conceptual category of birds

The aim of the monograph is to draw attention to the translational aspects of Czech and Polish terminology in biblical translations, primarily in the field of the conceptual category of birds (sparrow). Two important translational issues will be described, namely, “whether” and, above all, “how” the translator changes, modifies, adapts or enriches the language of translation. A confrontative-comparative analysis, mostly focused on ornithofauna, will show us how differently a translator or team of translators of the Holy Scripture texts uses a wide range of avifaunistic terminology in the 24 biblical verses I have studied, both in the Old and New Testaments.

Responsibility of war industry for lethal autonomous weapons systems

Author(s): Dominika Iwan-Sojka / Language(s): English

Keywords: international responsibility; business in armed conflicts; autonomous weapons systems; war crimes; autonomous targeting; war torts

International Responsibility of War Industry offers a new perspective on who is actually involved in war industry but do not necessarily bear responsibility for their contribution to armed conflicts and compliance with international values. It puts forward a novel theory about how these participants influence humanitarian crises. The book analyses an original, longitudinal dataset, on responsibility of various (both corporate and individual) participants of war industry, including states, international organizations, non-state armed groups, individuals, and private companies for effects of hostilities stemming from decisions made in tandem by humans and neural networks (within or without the human–machine relationship).

Other lives. The politics and ethics of mourning in the writings of Jacques Derrida

Inne życia. Polityka i etyka żałoby w pismach Jacques'a Derridy

Author(s): Aleksander Kopka / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: mourning; ethics of mourning; politics of mourning; Jacques Derrida; deconstruction; democracy

This monograph is devoted to the problem of mourning in the writings of Jacques Derrida and is based on a premise that mourning offers a unique and crucial access to the political and ethical dimension of his thought. Moreover, it conditions any ethics and politics whatsoever. In order to show the legitimacy of this thesis, the monograph reconstructs the way of thought originating in Derrida's early texts and exposes the source contamination of life by death, and consequently leads to deconstruction of metaphysical assumptions regarding the concept of singular and communal life in ethical and political discourses. The issue of mourning, therefore, provokes a more in-depth thinking about politics and ethics, which is based on a call for radical and unlimited responsibility for the mortal and singular other, and at the same time inspires to change not only the language of politics determined by ontotheology but also the political praxis itself. Therefore, the monograph unveils the necessary relationship between the thought of mourning and key political concepts (such as justice, hospitality, democracy, autoimmunity), the hyperbolic nature of which Derrida affirms in his writings.

Literature as a source of phraseological compounds. Dictionary

Literatura źródłem związków frazeologicznych. Słownik

Author(s): Agnieszka Piela / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: etymology; contemporary and historical Polish; lexis and phraseology of literary provenance; phraseology; paremiology; winged words; semantics

Literature is one of the oldest sources of phraseology. In the Polish phraseological resource, and not only in Polish, but there are also expressive associations of writer's provenance, the roots of which date back to antiquity. Importantly, this source is still alive and open, as evidenced by new constructions of this type entering the social circulation. Connections formed under the influence of various literary texts represent a sparsely investigated aspect of the Polish phraseological stratum. So far, there has been no elaboration showing the richness of the discussed phraseologies and explaining their literary origin. The presented collection, containing a total of 140 units of language, fills this gap in Polish lexicography. The book delineates the connections documented within both general and specialized dictionaries, as well as elucidates relationships newly incorporated into this lexicon, such as "plume dance," "waiting for Godot," "Dantean scenes," "heart of darkness," "Kafkaesque situation," "rabbit relatives and friends," "to rejuvenate hearts," "lion's share," "small apocalypse," "Mrożek would not have invented it," "order of souls," "lonely white sail," "skin and bones," "shadow streak," "The Three Brothers Budrys," and "call of blood". In native linguistics, there lacks a distinct designation for fixed constructions with a literary lineage. Consequently, the author introduces the term "literatureism" and its classifications: "lexical literature" and "phraseological literature." The main purpose of the publication is to present the meanings and etymology of the indicated fragment of phraseology. Studying the literary origins of currently operative expressions appears crucial, as the rationale behind many of them becomes increasingly obscure to users of the Polish language. Consequently, there exists a risk of their eventual obsolescence.

The Apostolate of the Sick 100 years of spiritual experience – theological foundations – pastoral perspectives

Apostolstwo Chorych. 100-letnie doświadczenie duchowe – podstawy teologiczne – perspektywy pastoralne

Author(s): Antoni Bartoszek / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: The Apostolate of the Sick; W.J. Willenborg; the meaning of life; theology of suffering; spiritual care; euthanasia; pandemics

The Apostolate of the Sick is a community established in the Netherlands in 1925. The principal purpose of the community, which is present in Poland as well, is to discover a spiritual and religious meaning of life marked by sickness and suffering. The monograph is the first comprehensive study of theology that underpins the foundations of the community since the beginnings of the Apostolate of the Sick. It has been based on Dutch, Polish, and French sources. The monograph proves that recognition of the meaning of suffering, often after an extended internal struggle, is extremely important for the sick. They are no longer passive receivers of care but become spiritually active entities. Such an attitude does not imply martyrdom nor does it diminish the achievements of medicine. Instead, it constitutes a spiritual and moral barrier against euthanasia.

Intellectual Property Rights and Scientific Authorship: Legal and Ethical Considerations Case Study in Hard Sciences and Natural Sciences

Author(s): Anna Chorążewska,Adam Proń / Language(s): English

Keywords: Human Rights; Legal and Ethical Rules of Authorship; Research Contribution; Authorship Attribution; Protecting Original Research Contribution; Responsibility

In the book, consisting of two parts, the issue of the protection of scholarly work from the perspective of law and research ethics is addressed. In the first part it is demonstrated that the catalogue of human rights includes the subjective right of creators of intangible goods, such as creators of science, to protect their moral and material interests relating to contribution to join research. The authors have reconstructed the content of that right based on the law and the codes of ethics for scientists. In the second part legal and ethical regulations are confronted with the reality of conducting research activities in hard and natural science from the perspective of teamwork and applying for the degrees and title awarded in the Polish higher education and science system.

The Aesthetics of the Film Image. Research Sketches

Estetyka obrazu filmowego. Szkice badawcze

Author(s): Jerzy Łukaszewicz / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: Image; Art; Creator

“The Aesthetics of the Film Image. Research Sketches” is an attempt to reveal and reconstruct the esoteric peculiarity of the film image, i.e. the quality of aesthetic values. We operate on many research levels and it is worth asking whether a clear definition of the quality of the aesthetic values of a film image is possible? The point here is to formulate the "presenting visuality" of the film image. Which peculiarities of the film image are the source and which in the recipient's perceptual awareness appear as "present", i.e. as objects of cognition? The source of cognition is embedded as the cause ¬– the stimulus – of the screen event, which manifests itself in the searching thought of the recipient of the film work. The philosophical sources of this singularity lie somewhere deep in metaphysical spaces, but they are the most hidden and at the same time perceptible.

Well-being in the context of foreign language education. The perspective of the student and the teacher of glottodidactics

Dobrostan w kontekście kształcenia językowego. Perspektywa ucznia i nauczyciela glottodydaktyka

Author(s): / Language(s): Polish

Keywords: foreign language teaching; relationships; emotions; well-being; psycholinguistics; motivation

The monograph presents an analysis of well-being in the context of foreign language education. The authors have conducted research that focuses on the subjective experience of life satisfaction, encompassing both educators and students.
