Erasmus - Journal for Culture of Democracy

Erasmus - Journal for Culture of Democracy

Erasmus – časopis za kulturu demokracije

Frequency: irregular and other / Country: Croatia

"Erasmus" was a bi-monthly magazine. It was founded in the spring of 1988 in Zagreb, with the intention of exploring the subjects and questions regarding the development of democracy in Croatia. The magazine was published by the ERASMUS GUILD, an independent institute for research and the promotion of peace and democracy. "Erasmus" united people that dedicated themselves to the protection of human rights and a free society in Croatia. The magazine has published work by prominent theorists (sociologists, philosophers, historians), journalists, writers and publicists. The relationship between culture and democracy and analyses of the political situation in Croatia and other post- communist countries were important topics for "Erasmus". The editorial committee of "Erasmus" has also organised round-table conferences between oppositional groups. In November 1993, "Erasmus" organised a round-table conference in Zagreb with Serbian and Croatian intellectuals. For the first time since the beginning of the war, intellectuals from Belgrade and Zagreb met for discussions on several topics. Some international media regard "Erasmus" as one of the most important cultural-political magazines of the former communist countries.
