Author(s): Diana Presadă / Language(s): Romanian

The book "Convention, Illusion and Reality in Twentieth-Century Drama", which is based on Diana Presadă’s doctoral thesis, aims to highlight the theatrical revolution produced by the Theatre of the Absurd in the 20th century. Starting from the analysis of the works of Eugen Ionescu, Samuel Beckett, Arthur Adamov and other absurdist playwrights, the study focuses on the aesthetic paradigm of a new theatrical trend in collision with tradition, as well as on the diversification and development of the performing arts in this century.

Corporeality, power relations and contamination in eighteenth-century British culture

Author(s): Ana Maria Tolomei / Language(s): English

The purpose of the book "Corporeality, Power Relations and Contamination in Eighteenth-Century British Culture" is to reconsider and show how corporeality by which I mean various ways in which bodies are organized can reshape the physical but most importantly the non-physical body in critical circumstances. Recuperation and rejuvenation attempts of obsolete values, de-construction, re-construction or re-creation of the body under the siege of a contaminant will to power or the obsessive need of de-contamination are some of the organizing and organizational systems analyzed in this book. Two of the main chapters of this book deal with common grounds and border transgression techniques in and of literary and medical discourses of epidemic and endemic disease like plague, smallpox or gout, with physician and non-physician writers focusing on the 18th century British culture. A skillful conjunction between the two leads to a high degree of textual and contextual synchronicity at the verbal, metaphoric level, and at the non-verbal level of physiological and psychological communication which are intensively and extensively analyzed in this book. This work is intended to be a social, political, moral and spiritual pre-reading, reading and re-reading of the body as text having in mind the assumption that body and consequently disease are culturally and historically determined or pre-determined when referring to previous uses of the body in its various manifestations.

Elemente de didactica predării limbii și literaturii române

Author(s): Marius Nica / Language(s): Romanian

The book aims at bringing together the main theories on Didactics, thus, becoming a very useful tool for students training to be teachers as well as for experienced teachers. The chapters are logically structured in order to provide both a theoretical background and suggestion for teaching Romanian language and literature. These suggestions are often the result of the author’s experience and consist of techniques that can help not only the teacher, but mainly the student in order to acquire knowledge and develop competences. An extensive chapter is dedicated to the assessment process which can prove to be one of the most important activities in education as it can yield some of the most unfortunate faults a teacher can make.

Obiectivări culturale specifice societăţii româneşti de consum: legenda contemporană

Author(s): Cristina Gafu / Language(s): Romanian

The specific mentalities of the urban environment in the contemporary society expresses itself in samples of the narrative way of expression, from very well shaped texts, polished, strenghtened through repeated oral transmission in the process of producing the text in variants (contemporary legend, stories connected to the events in the urban areas, anecdotes etc), to forms less formalized, more unstable and diffuse (the rumour folklore, samples of conversational folklore, puns, narrative nucleus etc.).One of the most productive narrative categories present in the communitary environments specific to the city is the contemporary legend.Trying to circumscribe the contemporary legend within the cultural manifestations belonging to the urban we should take into account the following reference points:-the context of performing and receiving; the relation between the referee (the referential medium which has created the narrative) and the performing moment;-the active/passive functions on the level of the cultural models developed in the urban;-the spreading and persistency in the domain of the urban folklore, as a condition of the specie’s existence in a structured form which can separate it from the ususal, daily communication, from the conversational. The book was conceived as an essay, focussing on the themes and problems particular to the Romanian folkloric environments.

This volume brings together the articles that the author has systematically published over the ten years existence of "Axioma" Journal (2000-2010).In addition to the articles addressing classical themes from the Romanian and French perimeter (Flaubert's correspondence and work, Victor Hugo's creation, Rebreanu's or Maupassant's short stories, etc.), the book also proposes approaches to some very current topics (conversations between Octavian Paler and Daniel Cristea-Enache, the secret of the investigation regarding the last expedition of Saint-Exupéry), sometimes the topics were completely new, such as the work of the French writer Lucette Desvignes (short stories, poems commented / translated by Diana Rînciog, or the presentation of fundamental exegeses , such as that of Silvia Pandelescu).

Sinteze de limba română

Author(s): Silvia Krieb Stoian / Language(s): Romanian

Sinteze de limba romȃnă is an overview of the new approach to Romanian grammar. It is a descriptive grammar updated in conception and terminology. Two modern grammars serve as a basis for the present book: the new Academic Grammar of Romanian (GALR, 2005) and Basic Romanian Grammar (GBLR, 2010). The book highlights the most important conceptual and terminological innovations and consists of two parts. The first one describes the lexical-grammatical classes and the second one presents the syntactic positions introduced in GALR (prepositional object, secondary object, object complement, possessive object, comparative complement).

The Dialogue of Cultures

Author(s): / Language(s): English

In a world subject to constant change and reconfiguring, societies, previously understood as mono-cultural, have incontestably been refashioned multicultural. The permeability of frontiers made individuals realize that, as denizens of the world, rather than citizens of a country, we live in and through the cultural encounter. Survival is about learning to live at the border, or rather across the borders, where the essential skill is to sense and value diversity and thus cherish the cultural dialogue. Fiction in dialogue with other art forms; fiction as an act of resistance; fiction across cultural borders; cultures in contact; the cultural clash; identity and the cultural and linguistic conflict and dialogue; migration and its linguistic challenges have offered the authors the chance to meet and exchange ideas.

Travelling across Cultures

Author(s): Anca Mihaela Dobrinescu / Language(s): English

This book is intended as a wake-up call. It is a book whose main aim is to enhance awareness of some of the problems with which contemporary world confronts itself. It is a humanist’s effort to draw attention to those issues that cause individuals’ anxiety and may eventually lead to their alienation. The question the book attempts to answer is how important intercultural communication is in an age of globalization, whose processes have irremediably affected society. Our intention is to gain insight into how globalizing practices have contributed to the reshaping of identities. We are also interested in finding out what knowledge and skills individuals should be equipped with to cope more efficiently with the challenge of living in the “global village.” Special attention will be given to issues related to communication between cultures as well as to some of the serious problems education has to consider in the new, and much too rapidly, changing context. The book will then be about intercultural communication and intercultural education as we see the two necessarily interrelated.

Words, Meanings and Discourses Religious Ideological Assumptions in Same-Sex Marriage Parliamentary Debates

Author(s): Mihaela Duma / Language(s): English

Based on my PhD thesis defended in 2014 at Babeş-Bolyai University Cluj-Napoca, Romania, "Words, Meanings and Discourses. Religious Ideologial Assumptions in Same-Sex Marriage Parliamentary Debates" aims to capture a balanced perspective on the hierarchical structure of language and, most importantly, to identify and highlight some of the multifarious and subtle processes along which meaning is created. Embacing the hypothesis that meaning is an act of creation, an event rather than an immovable, inherent property of words (Hanks 2000, Sinclair 2004), I have investigated the parliamentary discourses constructed on the Marriage (Same-Sex Couples) Bill enactment in the UK, in 2013. Unlike other relevant linguistic studies that exclusively approach the topic of homosexuality by accounting for the ways in which homosexual identity is discursively structured, the present survey addresses this sensitive matter at several levels. Having as a main purpose to identify and account for the religious ideological assumptions that underlie and are more or less overtly articulated in such discourses, my empirical research relies on a less typical analytical framework, one that combines corpus linguistics (CL) investigation tools with critical discourse analysis (CDA) methods. Hence, while exploring such discourses, I have come to seize subtle social attitudes and behaviours which, are able to point towards a fierce renegotiation of power position between, on the one hand, religion and all the traditional values it stands for and, on the other hand, the new, ever more visible, and vocal identity marker recognized as homosexuality.
