This book is an analysis of the fundamental problems and possible solutions of Hungarian public education, which are of primary importance and require significant intervention. The analysis is provided by the Civil Platform for Public Education (CKP) which compiles civil society organizations in the field of Hungarian education. The document subtitled as Way out of Educational Catastrophe is available and can be downloaded in three versions from ckpinfo.hu/kockaskonyv. In addition to Checkered Book including detailed analysis of the issue there is a summary of the book titled Checkered Booklet and a Checkered Table which compares the traditional versus the preferred approach to public education. Cheked Book was developed by the CKP Strategic Workgroup headed by István Nahalka and approved unanimously by the plenary meeting of CKP General Assembly on 2th December 2016. The book summarizes the fundamental problems of Hungarian public education that require considerable intervention, the solution of which must be the long term program of Hungarian educational policy. The phased and consistent solution of these fundamental problems would mean the overall reform of the Hungarian public education. The Checkered documents are for discussion. The authors did not aim to synthesize the different views of pedagogues groups. At given points there may be different opinions documented even among CKP members. Documenting state-of-the-art pedagogic approaches according to CKP values the authors wish to make proposals to people using schools. The aim of the document is to reach the politicians, to generate debates and to provide basis to given discussions and to put forward one of the most neglected questions in politics, the social dialogue. Checkered Book – with its system level recommendations - may have a role in preparation of the required profound changes.

On 11/12/2017 Civil Platform for Public Education (CKP) organized a consultation with the Hungarian opposition parties in order to define immediate actions necessary in public education. Within the framework of the project titled EDUA uainfo.hu – Information equality and knowledge-sharing communities in the access of Ukrainian refugee children to education" implemented by the Civil College Foundation (CCF) and the Civil Platform for Public Education (CPPE), our project team collected the information available on the topic and shared it on the uainfo.hu website, conducted a questionnaire-based survey among pedagogues and Ukrainian parents, organised a conference, online meetings and consultation sessions and participated in events held on the topic. This policy recommendation was prepared based on the experiences gained in the project, on the research results and on the overview of the international practice.

The Ministry of the Interior has invited school principals and teachers from some schools to "consult" on December 16, 2022, along aspects that have not yet been clarified. At the event, the speakers were able to share their thoughts and then listen to presentations by the education managers. From the presentation of Sándor Pintér, the minister responsible for education, it became clear that he has little information about the area and does not understand the data he presented. Moreover, he objected that the teachers only criticize, but have no suggestions. The CKP has been preparing such proposals since 2016 - several of its member organizations have been making such proposals for much longer. We always sent these proposals to the decision-makers and made them public. You can easily find out about them on our website. We drew the minister's attention to some of our professional materials in our letter before the above-mentioned meeting. Moreover, we also made proposals in specific, urgent matters. It seems that these have not reached him until now, so now we have collected the most important ones in a package for the Minister. The package will be delivered to you on December 21, 2022 at 3 p.m., accompanied by the letter below.
