Summary/Abstract: This discussion paper offers an exploration of certain aspects of the Macedonian conflict which have received insufficient attention from Macedonian and Western policy makers. It is concerned not with the immediate causes of last year’s violence, but with the fractures within Macedonia’s economy and society which make it prone to ethnic conflict. It argues that these underlying structural problems must be addressed if Macedonia is to have any lasting prospect of stability.
