Summary/Abstract: This report examines conditions in a municipality in Republika Srpska on the former front line; the municipality was once notorious as a hotbed of (Serbian) nationalism. Doboj, which was divided during the war and is now divided into four parts, has long reflected broader trends. Ten years ago, Doboj was notorious as a center of hardline nationalism. Bosniak and Croat villages in the area were ruthlessly destroyed. The few remaining non-Serbs were subjected to intense pressure to leave the area. The SDS (Serbian Democratic Party), founded by Radovan Karadžić, a man later indicted for war crimes, held Doboj firmly in its grip. There was no particular basis for hoping that he would multiethnic life in this region can ever be established.
