Summary/Abstract: After nearly five years of negotiations, on July 17, 2018, Japan and the European Union formally signed the Japan- EU Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). The EPA is the biggest bilateral trade deal ever negotiated, and once the agreement entered into force on February 1, 2019, it established simpler and faster trade within a market that contains around 640 million consumers and about a third of global gross domestic product. The agreement repre- sents the culmination of a longstanding cooperative process between the EU and Japan, creating the largest free trade zone in history.
