Summary/Abstract: The national question in Montenegro is deeply rooted in the complex legacy of the former Yugoslavia, where competing ethnic identities have shaped political life, statehood debates, and social divisions, particularly since independence in 2006. Although recent governments have shifted focus toward economic reform and EU integration, national and identity issues remain latent and can quickly re-emerge, as seen during the 2024–2025 census and debates over religious and historical symbols. Empirical research shows significant socio-economic differences among ethnic groups and a persistently high level of nationalism indicating that identity politics continues to play a powerful role in Montenegro’s political and social landscape.
