Summary/Abstract: Published by the press department of the Main Administration of Education and Enlightenment at the Ministry of Education. In the final days of World War II, Prague became the stage for a dramatic uprising against German occupation, fueled by the collapse of Nazi power and the determination of its citizens to reclaim freedom. Beginning on May 5, 1945, the city transformed from quiet anticipation into a battleground of barricades, street skirmishes, and relentless resistance. Ordinary civilians, alongside police and remnants of the army, seized weapons, built defenses, and fought against SS units determined to hold the city at any cost. Despite brutal tactics, air raids, and tank assaults, the spirit of liberation surged as news of advancing Allied forces spread, inspiring hope amid chaos. Negotiations for surrender faltered while violence escalated, culminating in desperate German attempts to escape westward. On May 9, the arrival of the Red Army shattered the last vestiges of Nazi control, marking Prague’s liberation and sealing the fate of an occupation that had promised a thousand years but ended in ruin. This uprising stands as a testament to courage, unity, and the unyielding will of a nation to break free from tyranny.
