Summary/Abstract: This study examines the state and potential of tourism development in the municipalities of Plandište, Alibunar and Bela Crkva in the South Banat region, as well as public policies at the municipal level that support its development. Modern economies and societies have focused their development on three basic areas of sustainability: economic, social and environmental. This fully applies to the development of tourism and all future strategies for its development and action programs in the field of tourism. Public policy documents at the local level will have to provide answers to the economic, social and environmental sustainability of this economic activity. Tourism is one of the activities that very quickly shows the results of investment and contributes to the rapid increase in employment of both highly qualified experts and less qualified, local workers. However, the latest development of the economic and political situation in the world has significantly changed the position of this economic branch as an instrument of local development.
