Summary/Abstract: Belarus is a continental (landlocked) country, mostly a plain country with no natural borders, occupying an area of 207,600 square kilometers, i.e. slightly smaller than Great Britain. The total length of its borders is 3,306 km, with Latvia 171 km, Lithuania 680 km, Poland 605 km, Russia 959 km and Ukraine 891 km. About one-fifth of the territory, mainly in the southeastern regions, continues to suffer the consequences of radioactive decay, due to the nuclear accident that occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine in 1986. During the Second World War, military operations devastated Belarus, which lost about a quarter of its population and half of its economic resources. This is an additional reason why Belarus is very sensitive and opposes the resolution of conflicts by military means.
