Summary/Abstract: In Bosnia and Herzegovina, on October 6, 2024, the 8th local elections will be held since the country's independence was declared in 1992. Mayors of municipalities and city mayors are elected, as well as municipal and city councils and assemblies in 143 local communities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The total number of voters is 3.4 million, which is significantly more than the population of Bosnia and Herzegovina. 110 political parties are participating in the elections, 386 are candidates for (city) mayor's positions. More than 25,700 candidates will fight for seats in the parliaments of local communities. The expected costs of the election are EUR 9.7 million. Out of 386 candidates for chiefs and mayors in BiH, only 29 are women, or 7.5%. Heads and mayors of local communities are elected directly, except in three cities - Sarajevo, Mostar and Brčko District of BiH. The OSCE/ODIHR international observation mission will observe the local elections in BiH and will have to additionally increase the number of observers due to the real danger of electoral manipulation and fraud.
