Summary/Abstract: The continuation of the Russian-Ukrainian war and the development of the security situation in the Red Sea, due to attacks by the Yemeni Houthi movement on ships on this vital corridor for global trade, forced European countries to find an alternative commercial transport route that connects them with China, avoiding Russia, the Red Sea or the Suez Canal. Europe is now focused more than ever on the Middle Corridor, a trade line combined of land, sea and rail routes, which can connect China with the EU. In 2023, China was the third largest export partner of the EU in volume of 8.8%, and imports from China to the EU amounted to 20.5% of total imports. Germany is leading European efforts to strengthen the infrastructure of this corridor, in order to avoid the northern trade corridor, which connects China with Europe and passes through Russia. The largest exporters to China from the EU are Germany (97 billion euros), France (25 billion euros) and the Netherlands (22 billion euros).
