Summary/Abstract: The road map for a sustainable solution to combating the illegal possession, abuse and trade of small arms and light weapons and related ammunition in the Western Balkans until 2024 was drawn up in close cooperation with all relevant institutions of the region under the auspices of the Federal Republic of Germany, with the technical support of SEESAC1, and in coordination with the United Kingdom, France and the European Union (EU). The road map was created on the basis of the clear political determination of all actors in the region to strengthen the control of small arms and suppress their spread, which was confirmed by the adoption of the Joint Statement at the high-level regional meeting where the Deputy Ministers of Internal Affairs and Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs gathered, held on February 1, 2018, in Podgorica, Montenegro. The document was officially adopted at the EU Summit for the Western Balkans in London on 10 July 2018, indicating the strong will of jurisdictions to address the challenges related to SALW in the Western Balkans and in Europe.
