Summary/Abstract: From July 1 to December 31, 2016, Slovakia presides over the Council of the European Union. Her presidency begins at a time when the Union is facing unprecedented challenges: the passing of the referendum in the United Kingdom opens the discussion on the future of the Union; the migrant crisis calls into question the functioning of the Schengen area; the recent terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels have highlighted shortcomings in the field of internal security; the consequences of the economic and financial crisis are still being felt in EU member states. Despite this, Slovakia has adopted a positive presidency program, which aims to promote solutions that contain a long-term vision of the EU.
